From Loss to Light: A Single Mother’s Journey of Courage and Determination

As a social mobilizer engaging with the community through SALT conversations, I had the privilege of meeting a 35-year-old woman living in a rented room in a neighborhood of Pokhara. What began as a simple interaction slowly unfolded into a deeply moving and inspiring life story one that reflects strength, resilience, and hope. She had married for love, and a few years later, they were blessed with a baby boy. Like many young families, they dreamed of building a secure and comfortable future. To provide better financial stability, her husband went abroad for employment. Gradually, their hard work began to bear fruit. Their financial condition improved, and life seemed to be moving forward positively. Back in the village, their son was growing up happily and was about to turn four. The future appeared promising. But life can change in an instant. While working abroad, her husband suddenly passed away, never to return home. The shock and grief of losing her life partner were devastating. Yet beyond her personal sorrow stood an even greater responsibility raising and nurturing her young son alone. In rural communities, single women often face social stigma and judgment. Conservative mindsets and traditional norms made her feel uncertain about her future in the village. She worried about the environment in which her son would grow up and whether he would receive the opportunities he deserved. Determined to create a brighter future for her child, she made a courageous decision: she would move to Pokhara. Her choice was not welcomed by everyone. Neighbors tried to discourage her, warning that city life was expensive and difficult. They reminded her that in the village there was always a system of mutual support people could borrow, share, and rely on one another. In the city, they said, she would be alone. Despite the fear and doubt expressed around her, she chose courage over comfort. With determination in her heart, she left the familiarity of her village and stepped into an uncertain future in the city. The journey was far from easy. Adjusting to city life, managing rent and expenses, and raising a child alone required extraordinary strength. There were financial pressures and emotional challenges. But giving up was never an option for her. Instead of surrendering to hardship, she decided to empower herself. She learned tailoring and dressmaking skills with the goal of becoming financially independent. Through consistent effort, patience, and hard work, she gradually established herself. Over time, she began earning enough to sustain herself and support her son’s education. Today, her son is 11–12 years old and continuing his studies. What once seemed impossible has become her reality. She is no longer viewed through a lens of sympathy. Instead, she stands as a symbol of strength and inspiration. In her village, many single women now look up to her story as proof that circumstances do not define destiny.

Her journey carries a powerful message: Being a single woman is not a weakness. With courage, determination, and consistent hard work, it is possible to rise above adversity. Even in the darkest moments, hope and perseverance can light the path forward. Her life reminds us that resilience can transform pain into purpose and struggle into success.
