Horijan Polli in Mymensingh, for many, the name may evoke images of dense settlements, distinct cultural identities, and stories of poverty. Yet beneath these surface perceptions lies an untapped world of resilience, dreams, and a powerful desire for change. One must witness it firsthand to truly believe it. Since the initiation of SALT activities, this community has been experiencing a series of remarkable transformations, changes that are not only hopeful but deeply inspiring.

At the heart of this transformation are the adolescents and young children of the community. Though small in age, their sense of responsibility, love for their community, and clarity of thought continually challenge our understanding of where real change begins. SALT Conversations here are not just structured sessions; they are safe and welcoming spaces where children can speak freely, share their dreams, and, most importantly, recognize their own strengths. We sit with them, listen to their stories, and try to see the community through their eyes. These conversations slowly awaken the leadership potential hidden within them. One question constantly echoes in their minds: “How can we make our community better?” This question is what sets them apart.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Horijan Polli is its natural cycle of learning. The younger children learn from the elders, and they do not limit that learning to words alone, they put it into action. Age is not a barrier here; courage and willingness to take responsibility matter far more. A powerful example of this spirit was witnessed on January 24, 2026, during the celebration of Saraswati Puja. There was no external donation, no large financial support, only the initiative of small hands and big hearts.

The children themselves decided to do something meaningful. Some contributed 50 taka, some 20, and others even 10 taka. Though the amounts were small, their intention was immense. Together, these modest contributions turned into a powerful collective effort. With the money, they purchased 90 pens and several notebooks, and then took the initiative to distribute them among all the younger children in the community. There was no grand ceremony, no camera flashes, just pure compassion and a deep sense of responsibility. One child shared, “This will increase interest in education among the children in our community.” That single sentence captures the essence of the entire initiative. They did not merely donate pens; they invested in the future. They understood that education is power, and that power has the potential to transform their community one day. Behind this inspiring story stands the quiet yet powerful role of SALT. SALT did not simply provide support; it nurtured awareness, built leadership skills, and most importantly, helped children recognize their own potential. SALT has shown that while age may be small, responsibility can be great, and the desire for change knows no limits.

Today, the small hands of Horijan Polli teach us a profound lesson: transforming a community does not always require large sums of money. What it truly requires is a big heart, a collective mindset, and the belief that we can. These children prove that change is not a distant dream. Change begins right here, with a pen, a decision, and the courage to walk forward together.

ময়মনসিংহের হরিজন পল্লী, নামটা শুনলেই অনেকের চোখে হয়তো ভেসে ওঠে ঘন বসতি, ভিন্ন কালচার আর দরিদ্রতার গল্প। কিন্তু এই পল্লীর ভেতরে যে অদম্য শক্তি, স্বপ্ন আর পরিবর্তনের আগুন লুকিয়ে আছে, তা চোখে না দেখলে বিশ্বাস করা কঠিন। SALT-এর কার্যক্রম শুরু হওয়ার পর থেকে এই কমিউনিটিতে একের পর এক এমন কিছু পরিবর্তন ঘটছে, যা শুধু আশাব্যঞ্জক নয়, ভীষণ অনুপ্রেরণারও। এই পরিবর্তনের কেন্দ্রবিন্দুতে রয়েছে এখানকার কিশোর–কিশোরী আর ছোট ছোট ছেলে-মেয়েরা। বয়সে ছোট হলেও তাদের চিন্তা, দায়িত্ববোধ আর কমিউনিটির প্রতি ভালোবাসা আমাদের প্রতিদিন নতুন করে ভাবতে শেখায়, আসল পরিবর্তন কোথা থেকে আসে। SALT কনভারসেশন এখানে শুধু কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সেশন নয়, বরং একটি নিরাপদ জায়গা, যেখানে শিশুরা নিজেদের কথা বলতে পারে, স্বপ্নের কথা বলতে পারে, আর সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণভাবে নিজেদের শক্তিটাকে চিনতে পারে। আমরা তাদের সঙ্গে বসে গল্প করি, শুনি তাদের ভাবনা, তাদের চোখ দিয়ে দেখি তাদের কমিউনিটি। এই কথোপকথনগুলোই ধীরে ধীরে তাদের ভেতরে থাকা লুকিয়ে থাকা নেতৃত্বের গুণকে জাগিয়ে তোলে। এখানকার শিশুরা সবসময় একটা প্রশ্ন নিয়ে ভাবে, “আমরা আমাদের কমিউনিটিকে কীভাবে আরও ভালো করতে পারি?” এই প্রশ্নটাই তাদের আলাদা করে তোলে। হরিজন পল্লীর আরেকটি সবচেয়ে সুন্দর দিক হলো, এখানে শেখার একটা স্বাভাবিক ধারা আছে। ছোটরা বড়দের কাছ থেকে শেখে, আর সেই শেখাকে শুধু কথা পর্যন্ত সীমাবদ্ধ রাখে না; বাস্তবে প্রয়োগ করে দেখায়। বয়স এখানে কোনো বাধা নয়, বরং দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার সাহসটাই মুখ্য। এই কথার সবচেয়ে জীবন্ত উদাহরণ আমরা দেখতে পাই ২৪ জানুয়ারি ২০২৬, সরস্বতীপূজার দিনে। সেদিন কোনো বাইরের দান বা বড় অর্থের আয়োজন ছিল না। ছিল শুধুই ছোট ছোট হাতের উদ্যোগ। কমিউনিটির ছোট ছেলে-মেয়েরাই সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়, তারা কিছু করবে নিজেদের মতো করে। কেউ দেয় ৫০ টাকা, কেউ ২০ টাকা, কেউ বা মাত্র ১০ টাকা। পরিমাণে ছোট হলেও তাদের ইচ্ছেটা ছিল বিশাল। এই সামান্য সামান্য টাকাগুলো একসাথে হয়ে তৈরি হয় একটি বড় সম্ভাবনা। সেই টাকায় তারা কিনে আনে ৯০টি কলম এবং বেশ কিছু খাতা। তারপর নিজেরাই উদ্যোগ নিয়ে সেই কলমগুলো কমিউনিটির সব ছোট ছেলে-মেয়েদের মধ্যে বিতরণ করে দেয়। কোনো বড় আয়োজন নয়, কোনো ক্যামেরার ঝলকানি নয়, শুধু নিখাদ ভালোবাসা আর দায়িত্ববোধ। তাদের একজন বলেছিল, “এর ফলে আমাদের কমিউনিটির ছেলে-মেয়েদের পড়াশোনার প্রতি আগ্রহ বাড়বে।” এই একটি বাক্যই যেন পুরো উদ্যোগের সারকথা। তারা শুধু কলম দেয়নি, তারা বিনিয়োগ করেছে ভবিষ্যতের জন্য। তারা বুঝেছে, শিক্ষা মানেই শক্তি, আর সেই শক্তিই একদিন কমিউনিটিকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাবে। এই পুরো গল্পের পেছনে রয়েছে SALT-এর নীরব কিন্তু শক্তিশালী ভূমিকা। SALT এখানে শুধু সহায়তা করেনি; সচেতনতা তৈরি করেছে, নেতৃত্বের গুণ গড়ে তুলেছে, আর সবচেয়ে বড় কথা, শিশুদের নিজেদের শক্তিকে নিজেরাই চিনতে শিখিয়েছে। SALT দেখিয়েছে, বয়স ছোট হলেও দায়িত্ববোধ বড় হতে পারে, আর পরিবর্তনের ইচ্ছা সীমাহীন হতে পারে। হরিজন পল্লীর এই ছোট ছোট হাতগুলো আজ আমাদের বড় একটা শিক্ষা দিচ্ছে, কমিউনিটি পরিবর্তনের জন্য সবসময় বড় অর্থ দরকার হয় না। দরকার হয় বড় মন, একসাথে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার মানসিকতা আর বিশ্বাস, আমরাও পারি। এই শিশুরাই প্রমাণ করছে, পরিবর্তন কোনো দূরের স্বপ্ন নয়। পরিবর্তন শুরু হয় ঠিক এখান থেকেই, একটি কলম, একটি সিদ্ধান্ত, আর একসাথে পথ চলার সাহস থেকে।
