From Byaspur to Birbhum: Where Stories Connect

গত বুধবার আমাদের সাথে দেখা হয় সুচনা টিমের সাথে। সুচনা টিম পশ্চিমবংগের একটি অরগানাইজেশান যারা ২০০৪ সাল থেকেই আদিবাসি মানুষদের নিয়ে কাজ করছে। তাদের মূল ফোকাস মুলত শিক্ষা। তারা Global Fund For Children (GFC) এর অন্য একটি প্রজেক্টের আন্ডারে ট্রেনিং এর জন্য এসেছিল বাংলাদেশে। আর এ বছর থেকেই তারা GFC এর সাথে Addressing Root Cause (ARC) ইনিশিয়েটিভে যুক্ত হয়েছে। 

তাদের গোপালগঞ্জ ভিসিটের উদ্দেশ্য ছিল-

১/  কমিউনিটি লেভেলে সল্ট কিভাবে কাজ করে সেটি দেখা। 

২/ আমাদের অভিজ্ঞতা গুলো একে অন্যের সাথে  শেয়ার করা। যাতে আমরা একে অন্যের কাজ থেকে শিখতে পারি।

সকাল ৭.৩০ এ আমরা গ্রো ইউর রিডার টিম যাই সূচনা টিমকে নিতে তাদের হোটেলের সামনে। তাদের সাথে প্রথম কথা বলার সাথে সাথেই মনে হলো তারা কতো সহজ সরল,  বিনয়ী ।  তাদের কথায়, আচার-আচরণ সব কিছুতেই খুব স্পষ্ট এটি। একসাথে আমরা রওনা দিই গোপালগঞ্জের উদ্দেশ্যে। গোপালগঞ্জ যাওয়ার পথে পদ্মা সেতু দেখে তাদের উচ্ছাস দেখে মনে হলো ভিন্ন দেশের হয়েও তারা আমার কতো আপন। ঠিক এমন উচ্ছাস তো আমারও ছিল এই সেতুর জন্য।  আর তারা ভিন দেশের হয়ে তাদেরও সেই উচ্ছাস। ভাবা যায়! তারা কত আপন ভাবে আমাদের! আমাদের এই সেতুকে?

ঠিক ১০.৪৫ এ আমরা পৌছালাম আমাদের জয়নগর হাই স্কুলে। স্কুল এর টিচার্স রুমে আমাদের বসার ব্যবস্হা করে রেখেছিল আমাদের ফ্যাসিলিটেটর প্রকাশ ভাই আর মনিরা আপু আর স্কুলের শিক্ষকরা। সেখানেই দুপুর ২টা পর্যন্ত আমাদের অভিজ্ঞতা শেয়ার হয়। কখন যে এতো সময় চলে গেলো বুঝতেই পারিনি। 

স্কুল থেকে চলে যাই আমাদের উত্তরপাড়ায় শাহানারা আপাদের ঘরে। গিয়ে তাদের মুখেই শুনলাম তাদের গল্প।  কিভাবে তারা শিশুদের পড়ানো শুরু করলো। তাদের সাথে আমরা একটা গ্রুপ সল্ট করলাম। তারপর ওখান থেকে চলে গেলাম হিজলি পাড়ায়। আলিশা আর মুনিয়ার নাচ দেখে আমরা ঢাকার উদ্দেশ্যে বেরিয়ে পড়ি। পথিমধ্যে মাওয়াতে নামি পদ্মার ইলিশ খেতে। সূচনা টিমের আনন্দ দেখার মতো ছিল। ইলিশ খেতে পেরে তারা খুশি।

তো এই পুরো ভিসিট থেকে আমি কি শিখলাম? 

১/ সুচনা টিমের প্রত্যেক মানুষ একেকজন সল্ট ফ্যাসিলিটেটর। তারা আগে কখনো সল্ট করেনি। কিন্তু সল্ট এর প্রত্যেকটি জিনিস তাদের আছে। তারা খুব ছোট ছোট জিনিসের ও খুব সুন্দর প্রশংসা করতে জানে মন থেকে। একটা উদাহরন দেই। হিজলীপাড়ায় আলিশা আর মুনিয়ার নাচ দেখে তারা ওখানেই বলে-

 " তোমরা কি সুন্দর নাচ করলে। তোমরা কিন্তু চাইলেই নাচ নিয়েও পড়তে পারো।  জানো নাচ নিয়ে আলাদা করেও পড়া যায়"। 

এতো সুন্দর করে যে শিশুর প্রতিভা বিকশিত করতে সাহায্য করা যায় এটা আমি প্রথম শিখলাম। শিখলাম সল্ট আসলে বই-খাতা,  গুগল থেকে শিখার কোন জিনিস না। এটা আসলে একটা মানুষের গুণ যে গুণ দিয়ে একজন আরেকজন মানুষের ভালোটাকে বড় করে দেখতে পারে।  আর একজন আরেকজনের সাথে সহজেই মিশে যেতে পারে।

২/ তারা যেভাবে আমাদের কমিউনিটির মানুষের সাথে মিশে গিয়েছিল মনেই হয়নি তারা বাইরের দেশ থেকে আসছে। তারা আমাদের কমিউনিটিকে এতোটাই আপন করে নিয়েছে যে তারা কমিউনিটি এর মানুষের সাথেই মাটিতে বসেছিল সল্ট করতে। এতো সরলভাবে মানুষকে ভালোবেসে মানুষের মন জয় করে মানুষকে আপন করে নেওয়াই তো সল্ট এর অংশ! তারা সল্ট না করেও সল্ট কিভাবে করতে হয় জানে।

৩/ নিজের অরগানাইজেশান এর জন্য আর নিজের কমিউনিটির জন্য যে নিজের কাজের বাইরেও গিয়েও কাজ করা যায় এটার জলজ্যান্ত উদাহরণ সূচনা টিম। তারা অরগানাইজেশান এর খরচ কমানোর জন্য আর যে কোনো মূহুর্তে কমিউনিটির মানুষের সাহায্য করার জন্য তারা সবাই গাড়ি চালানো শিখেছে। এই কথা শুনে আমি ভাবছিলাম আমি লাস্ট কবে এরকম কিছু করেছি?!

৪/ মিতালি দিদি আর পথিক দাদা এসেছিলেন।  উনারা সূচনা স্কুল থেকেই পড়াশোনা শেষ করে এখন সেই অরগানাইজেশান এবং কমিউনিটির মানুষের জন্য কাজ করে যাচ্ছে। কয়জন এভাবে ভাবে যে, আমি যা পেয়েছি কোন একটি জায়গা থেকে সেটিই আমি ফিরিয়ে দিবো?!  ওনাদের কথা শুনে আমারও মনে হলো এই দেশের মানুষ থেকে কতো কি নিয়েছি আমি। কি করলে আমি আমার দেশের জন্য,  দেশের মানুষের জন্য কিছু করতে পারবো! 

৫/ মঙ্গল দাদা বলছিল উনি আগে কম্পিউটার চালাতে জানতো না। সূচনাতে গিয়ে দেখলো ছোট ছোট বাচ্চারা কম্পিউটার চালাচ্ছে। তখন উনি ভাবলো-

" এই ছোট ছোট বাচ্চারা পারলে, আমি পারবো না কেন!"

এই একটা লাইন থেকে আমি শিখলাম চাইলেই তো কতো কি শিখা যায়! শুধু দরকার ইচ্ছা শক্তি। 

৬/ একটা কমিউনিটিকে কতটা আপন ভাবলে কমিউনিটির মানুষের ভাষার জন্য তারা নিরলস কাজ করে যাচ্ছে। সাঁওতালি ভাষা রক্ষার জন্য তারা এই ভাষাকে ডিজিটালাইজ করতে এক নাগাড়ে কাজ করছে। তারা ভাবেনি আমি একটা চাকরি করি। তারা একটা কমিউনিটিকে আপন করে নিয়েছে। নিজের ঘরের মানুষের জন্য আমরা যেভাবে ভাবি, কাজ করি, আমার মনে হয়েছে তারা তাদের কমিউনিটিকে সেভাবে ওন করে। কমিউনিটিকে পরিবার না ভাবলে কখনো তাদের জন্য মন থেকে ভাবা যায়না, কাজ করা যায়না। 

তারা এসেছিলো আমাদের থেকে জানতে, দেখতে কিন্তু দিন শেষে মনে হলো তাদের থেকে আমরাই অনেক বেশি কিছু শিখলাম, জানলাম।

Suchana is an organization from West Bengal that has been working with Adivasi communities since 2004. Their main focus is education. They came to Bangladesh for training under another project supported by Global Fund For Children (GFC). And from this year, they’ve also joined GFC’s Addressing Root Causes (ARC) initiative.

Their visit to Gopalganj had two main purposes:

1. To see how SALT works at the community level
   
   
2. To exchange our experiences so we can learn from one another
   
   

At 7:30 in the morning, we — the Grow Your Reader team — went to pick up the Suchana team from in front of their hotel. From the very first conversation, it was clear how humble, kind, and simple-hearted they were. You could feel it in their words, in their behavior. Together, we began our journey to Gopalganj.

The joy on their faces when we crossed the Padma Bridge was unforgettable. Even though they were from a different country, they felt so close to us. Their excitement reminded me of how we ourselves once felt about the bridge. And they felt that same excitement — for our bridge. Isn’t that amazing? That’s how deeply they connected with us, and with our land.

At exactly 10:45 AM, we reached Joynagar High School. Our facilitators, Prokash bhai and Manira apu, along with the school teachers, had arranged our seating in the teachers’ room. We shared stories and experiences until 2:00 PM. Time flew by without us realizing it.

From the school, we went to Shahanara apa’s house in Uttarpara. There, we listened to the mothers’ stories — how they started teaching children in their homes. We did a group SALT session with them. Then we went to Hijlipara. After watching a beautiful dance performance by Alisha and Munia, we began our return journey to Dhaka. On the way, we stopped at Mawa to enjoy Padma’s famous hilsa fish. The Suchana team was delighted — you could see the joy on their faces.

So what did I learn from this visit?

1. Each member of the Suchana team is a SALT facilitator in their own way.
   They never officially practiced SALT, but every part of SALT was within them. They knew how to appreciate even the smallest things — and genuinely, from the heart.
   For example, after Alisha and Munia’s dance performance in Hijlipara, they said:
   “You danced so beautifully. You can even study dance if you want! Did you know you can pursue higher education in it?”
   That was the first time I realized how simple appreciation like this can help a child’s talent blossom. SALT isn’t something you learn from books or Google — it’s a human quality. A way of seeing the good in others, and connecting easily and openly.
   
   
2. They blended in with our community so naturally that it didn’t feel like they were visitors from another country. They sat on the floor with our community members and joined the SALT session with warmth and simplicity. Loving others and winning hearts like this — that’s the essence of SALT. Even without being trained, they knew how to do SALT.
   
   
3. They went beyond their roles to support their community and organization.
   For example, to reduce transport costs and help community members whenever needed, all of them learned to drive. That left me thinking: When was the last time I did something like that — something outside my job just for the people I work for?
   
   
4. Mitali didi and Pathik dada came with them.
   Both of them studied at Suchana, and now they’re working for the same organization and community that helped them grow. How many people think like that — “Let me give back to the place that gave me so much”?
   Hearing their stories made me wonder: I’ve received so much from the people of this country. What am I doing to give something back?
   
   
5. Mongal da shared that he didn’t know how to use a computer at first.
   But when he saw little kids at Suchana using it, he thought:
   “If they can do it, why can’t I?”
   That one line taught me that learning anything is possible — all we need is the will.
   
   
6. How deeply must you love a community to work like this?
   They are working tirelessly to preserve and digitize the Santali language. They don’t just see it as a job — they have owned their community. Just like we do things for our families, they do things for their community.
   Unless you truly consider a community your own, you can’t work with such heart.
   
   

They came here to learn from us. But in the end, it felt like we were the ones who learned the most.
