Swapna's dream loom, a story of standing on one's own feet

That afternoon, I went out to see the vegetable gardens of our community. I was going to see how the gardens were doing during this rainy season, and whether everyone was taking proper care of them. On the way, I saw Swapna, Maria and Rima from Rajnigandha Group standing and talking.
When they saw me, they said, "Apu, how are you?" I said, "Alhamdulillah, I am fine. How are you?" They said, "I am fine."
Then Swapna said, "Apu, don't listen, we are starting a new project."
I said, "Then come on, let's sit and talk."
The four of us sat on the steps of an aunt's balcony next door. I said, "Tell me, what are you starting?"
Swapna said, "Apu, we want to stand on our own. Ritu and Drishti are making seats by sewing designs. And I am learning weaving from my father.
I said, "Why weaving?"
Swapna said, my father works as a weaver. He gets 30 taka for making a lungi. I told him, I will also learn the work with you. I will work in between my studies. Then I can help a little with my study expenses.
I said, why this work when there is so much work?
He said, Apu, this work can be done at our house. It also makes good income. That is why I started this work.
Then Maria said, Apu, I am also learning from Swapna. I also want to work with them.
I liked listening to them very much. I felt that the Salt Addas are not just for talking, people also learn to recognize their own strength from here. Today, Swapna is showing that.
Now, along with her studies, Swapna works as a weaver with her father. Earlier, her father used to make 12 lungis alone a day. Now, with Swapna by his side, 16 lungis are made a day. Swapna alone makes 4 lungis. This earns 120 taka every day. With this money, she can now buy the things she needs for her studies. She doesn't have to beg her father like she used to.
Swapna's last words really stuck in my mind. She said, "Apu, many girls stop studying due to lack of money, and many get married early. But if we can earn a little ourselves, it will be much easier to continue our studies."
This small initiative by Swapna has given me a lot of hope. Swapna is a beautiful example of how life can be changed if you recognize your own strength and take a bold step forward.

স্বপ্নার স্বপ্নের তাঁত ঢল, নিজের পায়ে দাঁড়ানোর গল্প

সেদিন বিকেলে আমি আমাদের কমিউনিটির সবজি বাগানগুলো দেখতে বের হয়েছিলাম। এই বর্ষার সময়ে বাগানগুলোর কী অবস্থা, সবাই ঠিকমতো যত্ন নিচ্ছে কিনা, এগুলো দেখার জন্যই যাচ্ছিলাম। পথে দেখি রজনীগন্ধা গ্রুপের স্বপ্না, মারিয়া আর রিমা দাঁড়িয়ে গল্প করছে।

আমাকে দেখে ওরা বলল, আপু, কেমন আছেন? আমি বললাম, আলহামদুলিল্লাহ ভালো আছি। তোমরা কেমন আছো?" ওরা বলল, ভালো আছি।"

এরপর স্বপ্না বলল, আপু, শোনেন না, আমরা একটা নতুন কাজ শুরু করছি।

আমি বললাম, তাহলে চলো, বসে গল্প করি।

পাশের এক চাচির বারান্দার সিঁড়িতে আমরা চারজন বসলাম। আমি বললাম, বল তো, কী কাজ শুরু করছ?

স্বপ্না বলল, আপু, আমরা তো চাই নিজেরা কিছু করে দাঁড়াতে। ঋতু আর দৃষ্টি নকশি সেলাই দিয়ে আসন বানাচ্ছে। আর আমি আব্বার কাছ থেকে তাঁতের কাজ শিখছি।

আমি বললাম, তাঁতের কাজই কেন?

স্বপ্না বলল, আমার আব্বা তো তাঁতের কাজ করেন। একটা লুঙ্গি বানালে ৩০ টাকা মজুরি পান। আমি আব্বাকে বললাম, আমিও তোমার সাথে কাজ শিখব। পড়ালেখার ফাঁকে ফাঁকে কাজ করব। তাহলে নিজের পড়ার খরচে একটু সাহায্য করতে পারব।

আমি বললাম, অনেক কাজ থাকতে এই কাজটাই কেন?

ও বলল, আপু, এই কাজটা আমাদের বাড়িতেই করা যায়। আবার এতে ভালো আয়ও হয়। তাই এই কাজটাই শুরু করেছি।

তখন মারিয়া বলল, আপু, আমিও স্বপ্নার কাছ থেকে শিখছি। আমিও ওদের সাথে কাজ করতে চাই।

ওদের কথা শুনে আমার খুব ভালো লাগল। মনে হলো, সল্টের আড্ডাগুলো শুধু গল্প করার জন্য না, এখান থেকে মানুষ নিজের শক্তিটাও চিনতে শেখে। আজ স্বপ্নারা সেটাই করে দেখাচ্ছে।

এখন স্বপ্না পড়ালেখার পাশাপাশি বাবার সাথে তাঁতের কাজ করে। আগে তার বাবা একা দিনে ১২টা লুঙ্গি বানাতেন। এখন স্বপ্না পাশে থাকায় দিনে ১৬টা লুঙ্গি তৈরি হয়। স্বপ্না একাই ৪টা লুঙ্গি বানায়। এতে প্রতিদিন ১২০ টাকা আয় হয়। এই টাকা দিয়ে এখন নিজের পড়ালেখার দরকারি জিনিস কিনতে পারে। বাবার কাছেও আগের মতো হাত পাততে হয় না।

স্বপ্নার শেষ কথাটা আমার খুব মনে ধরেছে। সে বলল, আপু, টাকার অভাবে অনেক মেয়ের পড়ালেখা বন্ধ হয়ে যায়, আবার অনেকের তাড়াতাড়ি বিয়েও হয়ে যায়। কিন্তু আমরা যদি নিজেরা একটু আয় করতে পারি, তাহলে পড়ালেখা চালিয়ে যাওয়া অনেক সহজ হবে।

স্বপ্নার এই ছোট্ট উদ্যোগ আমাকে অনেক আশা দিয়েছে। নিজের শক্তিকে চিনে, সাহস করে এক পা এগিয়ে গেলে যে জীবনে পরিবর্তন আনা যায়, স্বপ্না তারই সুন্দর একটা উদাহরণ।
