The Journey From Weapons to Football.Run for unity,Focus on Goal

I have a long-standing association with the "Kanjar" community residing in the Jogiyabari forest of Maharajganj district, Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Largely excluded from inclusive development, this community lives life with remarkable courage, industriousness, and skill, even amidst harsh circumstances.

ARC – Addressing Root Cause baseline
To understand the root causes of the community's issues, I conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with the boys and girls. The conversations revealed that approximately 70% of children over the age of eight would go hunting with the community for about 15 days a month. For these children, it was not merely a tradition but also a form of entertainment.
A question would repeatedly arise in my mind: if a child’s mind begins to find amusement in the suffering, screams, tears, and flowing blood of a living creature, in what direction will their personality develop? This thought used to shake me to my core.

The Seed of Change
During the SALT and Dream Building sessions under the CLCP initiative, the children expressed a desire for the first time: "We want to become athletes." They loved football and cricket, yet they lacked both the resources and the belief that sports could shape their futures.

The Beginning of Change
I gave them the opportunity to participate in a state-level sports competition organized on International Street Children's Day. Despite minimal preparation, they performed brilliantly in Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, and—most notably—football.
That day, I realized: "When the crisis is one of identity, even the last drop of blood fuels the sweat of hard work."The most emotional moment came when, upon being asked what prize they wanted, the children chose a football over a trophy. Both the boys' and girls' teams were given a football each.

The Culmination of Change
Today, those same children practice regularly, compete against teams from other communities, and are carving out an identity for themselves. Today, I was on the field with the girls' team; their footwork and control over the ball were superb. Through healthy recreation, they have discovered boundless possibilities.

The Significance of Change
Entertainment is not merely a way to pass the time; it is a foundation for character building. If enjoyment is derived from violence, mockery, law-breaking, or anti-social activities, then envisioning a healthy society becomes difficult. Today, the very same children say—"We have a match today. There is a team meeting today. We need to prepare for a competition... we won't go hunting today." This is the most significant change. Earlier they used to go for hunting 15 days a month, now its come down to around 8 days. Sports have begun to alter not just how they spend their time, but the very direction of their lives. Now, they want to join the school sports team. Perhaps the path to education will also become easier from here.
I am a witness to this change and deeply grateful to this community. A welcome change.

स्थान-जंगल जोगियाबारी

पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश के महराजगंज जिले के जंगल जोगियाबारी में बसा हुआ एक समुदाय जो "कंजड़" समुदाय है,हालांकि ये शब्द संस्कृत के "काननचर" से बना है(कानन का अर्थ वन और चर से तात्पर्य है विचरण करने वाला)अर्थात वन में विचरण करने वाले है.जो कालांतर में अपभ्रंश स्वरूप "कंजड़" हो गया।।
समावेशी विकास से अछूता,अस्पृश्यता,विकट जीवन जीता बेहद मजबूत और हुनरमंद लोगो का समुदाय है,जिसमें सभी वर्गों का जीवन चुनौतीपूर्ण है।।

इस समुदाय को लंबे समय से जानते हुए ,यहां समस्याओं की जड़ को चिन्हित करने के लिए FGD (लड़के और लड़कियों) मैने ही किया था,लड़को की सामान्य दिनचर्या में 8 वर्ष से ऊपर 70 प्रतिशत बच्चे महीने के 15 दिन जंगली जानवर का शिकार करने के लिए समुदाय के साथ जाते थे, बच्चों और किशोर समूह शिकार को घेरने,शोर मचाने,छोटे हथियारों से उनको व्याकुल करके प्रमुख जाल तक लाते थे जहां बड़े हथियार से उनको फंसा के मारा जाता है,,बच्चो का इस कार्य में मनोरंजन होता था,उस वक्त मैं सोचा कि किसी जीव के पीड़ा,चीख,आंसू,और फूटते रक्त से भरे शरीर में मनोरंजन तलाशने वाले बालमन का व्यक्तित्व घातक हो सकता है,मैं सिहर उठता था.

*बदलाव का बीज*
CLCP के तहत SALT और ड्रीम बिल्डिंग के दौरान बच्चों ने बताया कि वो खिलाड़ी बनना चाहते हैं ,उनको फुटबॉल और क्रिकेट खेलने का मन है,लेकिन कोई संसाधन नहीं है न ही रास्ता पता है कि उसमें भविष्य कैसे बनाएं,इस सोच में लड़के और लड़कियों दोनों शामिल थे..


*बदलाव की शुरुआत*
सेफ़ सोसायटी द्वारा प्रतिवर्ष अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्ट्रीट चिल्ड्रन डे(12 अप्रैल) के दिन राज्यस्तरीय खेल प्रतियोगिता का आयोजन किया जाता है..इन बच्चों के लिए ये आयोजन संभावना और प्रेरणा की राह बन सकता है,यह सोचकर संस्था द्वारा इनको खेल में भाग लेने का निमंत्रण दिया गया.
खेल प्रतियोगिता में इस समुदाय के लड़कों और लड़कियों ने अल्प तैयारी के बावजूद अप्रत्याशित प्रदर्शन किया.खो खो,कबड्डी के साथ फुटबॉल टीम का प्रदर्शन सराहनीय रहा..मजबूत शरीर,चपलता,फुर्ती,चौकन्ना रहना, पैंतरे बदलना,प्रतिद्वंदी को छकाए रखना ये सब गुण इनके लिए नैसर्गिक है ,जो शिकारियों के प्रजाति की वजह से है..इसके साथ ही एक बात मैने महसूस किया कि *जब संकट पहचान का हो तो खून की अंतिम बूंद भी श्रम के पसीने को जोर लगाती है*..समुदाय के बच्चों ने दर्शकों को आश्चर्यचकित किया,,ये आश्चर्य तब और बढ़ा जब किशोर और किशोरियों के समूह ने इनाम में फुटबॉल मांगा,,संस्था के लिए हर्ष मिश्रित गर्व का विषय था और खेल प्रतियोगिता के लिए एकत्र 2 फुटबॉल को किशोर टीम एवं किशोरी टीम को उपलब्ध करा दिया गया..

*बदलाव की परिणति*
आज समुदाय में जिसके अपने छोटे मैदान है,उस समुदाय के किशोर अन्य समुदाय के बच्चों के साथ फुटबॉल प्रतियोगिता करते हैं,निरंतर अभ्यास करके खुद की धार पैनी कर रहे हैं,लड़कियों की टीम के साथ आज मैं खेल के मैदान पे था,फुटबॉल पे उनके पैरों की पकड़ शानदार है..किशोर समूह ने अपना स्वस्थ मनोरंजन ढूंढ लिया है,और असीमित संभावना भी..
*बदलाव के मायने*
इस बदलाव के महत्व से पहले एक विचार साझा करता हु कि इंसान के व्यक्तित्व में उसके मनोरंजन का विशेष महत्व है कि किस गतिविधि से उनको आनंद मिलता है,अगर आनंद दूसरों को पीड़ा से,उपहास से,कानून को तोड़ने से,अनुशासन विहीन,असामाजिक गतिविधियों से मिल रहा है तो स्वस्थ समाज की परिकल्पना नहीं की जा सकती है.
*इस बदलाव से जो बच्चे शिकार के लिए लालायित थे वो अब कहते हैं कि आज हमारा मैच है,आज टीम की बैठक है ,किसी प्रतियोगिता की तैयारी करना है,आज शिकार पर नहीं जाएंगे*
इस तरह बच्चों का शिकार पे जाना कम हो रहा है,खेल के लिए स्कूल टीम से जुड़ना उनकी चाहत है,इस तरह स्कूल की राह भी आसान होगी।।
मैं इस बदलाव का साक्षी हूं,इसके लिए संस्था और समुदाय का आभारी हूं..सुखद बदलाव है।
