Gender discrimination is changing with the help of parents

In the Pechakola community, there was a lot of discrimination between boys and girls from an early age. Who would play what, what clothes to wear, what work to do—these were also thought about differently. But when we started sharing our experiences and thoughts with the parents in the group salt session, the doors of new ideas gradually opened.
One day, the parents decided not to make any distinction between boys and girls. They all dressed up in the same clothes and organized a football game. There were no separate teams on the playground—everyone played, ran, laughed, and had fun together.
Seeing the pure smiles on the children's faces, the parents' hearts were also filled with joy. Many mothers said that earlier they thought that some games were only for boys. But that day they realized that girls can also play and enjoy themselves equally if given the opportunity.
This small initiative has brought a message of big change to our community. Children are learning to understand that we are not boys and girls—we are all human beings. Just as there is joy in playing together, there is true peace and joy in learning, working together, and respecting each other.
We believe that such small changes will help build a beautiful society of non-discrimination, respect, and equality in the future.

অভিভাবকদের হাত ধরেই বদলে যাচ্ছে লিঙ্গ বৈষম্যতা

পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটিতে আগে ছেলে ও মেয়ে শিশুদের মধ্যে ছোটবেলা থেকেই অনেক বৈষম্য ছিল। কে কী খেলবে, কী পোশাক পরবে, কোন কাজ করবে—এসব বিষয়েও আলাদা ভাবা হতো। কিন্তু গ্রুপ সল্টের সেশনে আমরা যখন অভিভাবকদের সঙ্গে নিজেদের অভিজ্ঞতা ও ভাবনা ভাগাভাগি করতে শুরু করি, তখন ধীরে ধীরে নতুন কিছু ভাবনার দরজা খুলতে থাকে।
একদিন অভিভাবকেরাই সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন, ছেলে-মেয়েদের মধ্যে কোনো ভেদাভেদ করবেন না। সবাই মিলে ছেলে ও মেয়ে শিশুদের একই ধরনের পোশাক পরিয়ে একটি ফুটবল খেলার আয়োজন করলেন। খেলার মাঠে কোনো আলাদা দল ছিল না—সবাই একসঙ্গে খেলেছে, দৌড়েছে, হেসেছে এবং আনন্দ করেছে।
শিশুদের মুখের সেই নির্মল হাসি দেখে অভিভাবকদের মনও আনন্দে ভরে ওঠে। অনেক মা বললেন, আগে তারা ভাবতেন কিছু খেলা শুধু ছেলেদের জন্য। কিন্তু সেদিন তারা বুঝতে পেরেছেন, সুযোগ পেলে মেয়েরাও সমানভাবে খেলতে পারে এবং আনন্দ পায়।
এই ছোট্ট উদ্যোগ আমাদের কমিউনিটিতে একটি বড় পরিবর্তনের বার্তা নিয়ে এসেছে। শিশুরা বুঝতে শিখছে, ছেলে-মেয়ে নয়—আমরা সবাই মানুষ। একসঙ্গে খেলাধুলা করলে যেমন আনন্দ পাওয়া যায়, তেমনি একসঙ্গে শেখা, কাজ করা এবং একে অপরকে সম্মান করার মধ্যেও সত্যিকারের শান্তি ও আনন্দ রয়েছে।
আমাদের বিশ্বাস, এমন ছোট ছোট পরিবর্তনই ভবিষ্যতে বৈষম্যহীন, সম্মানপূর্ণ এবং সমতার একটি সুন্দর সমাজ গড়ে তুলতে সাহায্য করবে।

বায়োজিদ ভাই তার Masculinity নিয়ে করা কাজগুলোর অভিজ্ঞতা ও ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তনের গল্প আমাদের সাথে অফিসে সবসময় শেয়ার করেন। সেসব গল্প আমার খুব ভালো লাগত। তাঁর মাধ্যমে আমি অন্যান্য প্রতিষ্ঠানের কাজ সম্পর্কেও জানতে পারি। এরপর বাংলাদেশের পাশাপাশি ভারত ও নেপালের বিভিন্ন প্রতিষ্ঠানের সুস্থ পুরুষত্ব এবং মেয়েদের খেলাধুলা নিয়ে প্রকাশিত ব্লগ ও ভিডিও পড়তে ও দেখতে শুরু করি। বিভিন্ন কমিউনিটিতে আসা ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তনের গল্পগুলো আমাকে ভাবায়—এ ধরনের আলোচনা যদি আমাদের কমিউনিটিতেও করা যায়, তাহলে এখানেও পরিবর্তন আসতে পারে।
পরে আমাদের নলেজ ফেয়ারেও সুস্থ পুরুষত্ব নিয়ে নাটক উপস্থাপন করা হয়। বিভিন্ন কোহর্ট পার্টনার তাদের কমিউনিটির পরিবর্তনের গল্প শেয়ার করেন। সেসব গল্প ও নাটক কমিউনিটির মানুষ আগ্রহ নিয়ে দেখেন এবং ইতিবাচকভাবে গ্রহণ করেন।

এরপর আমি আমাদের ম্যাসকুলিনিটি দলের সদস্য ও অভিভাবকদের নিয়ে গ্রুপ SALT সেশন আয়োজন করি। সেখানে গল্প, বাস্তব উদাহরণ এবং অন্য কমিউনিটিতে ঘটে যাওয়া পরিবর্তনের অভিজ্ঞতা নিয়ে আলোচনা করি। অন্য কমিউনিটির মেয়েরা সুযোগ পেয়ে যেভাবে শিক্ষা, খেলাধুলা ও বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে, তা দেখে আমাদের কমিউনিটির অভিভাবকেরাও উপলব্ধি করেন যে, সুযোগ পেলে তাদের মেয়েরাও অনেক কিছু করতে পারে।

এই আলোচনা থেকে তাদের চিন্তাভাবনায় ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন আসে। তারা বলেন, ছেলে-মেয়েকে সমানভাবে পড়াশোনা, খেলাধুলা ও নিজেদের দক্ষতা গড়ে তোলার সুযোগ দেওয়া উচিত।

Baizid Bhai regularly shared with us at the office his experiences and stories of positive change from his work on healthy masculinity. I always found those stories inspiring. Through him, I also learned about the work of other organizations. I then began reading blogs and watching videos from organizations in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal on healthy masculinity and girls' participation in sports. The stories of positive change emerging from different communities made me reflect that if similar conversations could take place in our own community, they too could lead to meaningful change.

Later, at our Knowledge Fair, a drama on healthy masculinity was performed. Different cohort partners shared stories of transformation from their communities. Community members watched the drama and listened to these stories with great interest, and they responded very positively.

After that, I organized group SALT sessions with members of our masculinity team and with parents. During these sessions, we discussed stories, real-life examples, and experiences of change from other communities. Seeing how girls in other communities had been given opportunities to pursue education, participate in sports, and develop their talents helped parents in our community realize that their own daughters could also achieve a great deal if given similar opportunities.

These discussions brought about a positive shift in their thinking. Parents expressed that boys and girls should be given equal opportunities to study, play sports, and develop their skills and potential.
