From Conversation to Community Action:Value of Group Salt

On 11 March 2026, we held our first Group SALT conversation in the Majilang community, where community members from Dadagau also participated. At that time, I was still discovering the true power of Group SALT. In my previous blog, I shared how my first Group SALT experience took me from confusion to connectionhttp://https://aidscompetence.ning.com/profiles/blogs/from-confusio... Little did I know that this single conversation would become the beginning of a remarkable community transformation. As the conversation unfolded, something beautiful happened.People began sharing stories they had never shared before not even with their own family members. The trust created during the Group SALT conversation made people feel safe enough to speak honestly. There was no blaming, no judging, and no one telling the community what to do. Instead, people listened with open hearts, appreciated one another's experiences, and began searching for solutions together.

Among the many issues discussed that day, one concern touched everyone deeply.

The community's only school, Saraswati Primary School in Dadagau, had only three students enrolled. Some children had dropped out of school, while many parents had chosen to send their children to private schools because they had better infrastructure and school bus services. Ironically, many successful people from the community had once studied in this very school, yet today it stood almost empty.According to government records, the school was one of those most likely to be closed because of its low enrollment.

As the reality sank in, the atmosphere changed.

The conversation was no longer just about a school It became about the future of an entire community.People reflected on their own childhood memories. They remembered the classrooms where they had learned to read and write, the playground where they had laughed together, and the teachers who had shaped their lives. They realized that if the school closed, future generations would lose not only a place to study but also an important part of their community's identity. At that moment, everyone reached the same conclusion. If they wanted to save the school, they had to act together.Without waiting for outside support, the community prepared an action plan. They met with the School Management Committee, visited families, discussed the importance of the school with parents, and raised awareness throughout the village. They encouraged people to look beyond convenience and remember that a community school belongs to the community itself.

Then something happened that none of us could have imagined. When the new academic session began, children started returning to Saraswati Primary School.Families who had previously enrolled their children elsewhere decided to bring them back. Parents who had lost hope began believing again. The classrooms slowly filled with students. Around 19 children were admitted Children's laughter echoed through the playground once more. The silence that had surrounded the school was replaced with life, joy, and hope.

A school that had been on the verge of closure was alive once again.

A few days later, our salt facilitator mobilizer received a phone call.Sir, could you please come to the community  We have something to show you.Curious, he immediately visited Dadagau. The community members led him straight to the school. What he saw left him speechless.Children were studying inside the classrooms. Others were running and laughing in the playground. Teachers were smiling. The school that everyone feared would disappear had become full of life once again. Our salt facililator stood there with of joy in his eyes.

One community member looked at him and quietly said,Thank you so much for bringing us together through Group SALT. If that conversation had not happened, I truly believe this school would be closed today. We would have lost something that belongs to all of us. Today, because we came together, our children have a school, and our community has hope.In that moment we truly understood the power of Group SALT.

Reflection:Group SALT is not simply a meeting. It is not simply a conversation. It is a process that builds trust, awakens collective responsibility, and helps communities discover the strength they already have within themselves.Nobody came from outside with money to save the school.Nobody imposed a solution. The community listened. The community decided. The community acted. And the community created change. This experience reminded us that sustainable change does not always begin with large projects, big budgets, or outside experts.Sometimes all it takes is a safe space where people can listen to one another, believe in one another, and realize that the power to create change has been within them all along.
