Leadership of Youth in Child Safety on the Banks of the River

Jamuna is the name of a significant river in Bangladesh. And on the banks of this river is the location of the Owl Community. Because of this, most of the people in the community are involved with the river. From bathing to daily life, many activities are done in this river.  Children and adults regularly go to the river for various purposes, starting from bathing, washing and wiping. However, due to climate change, every year during the rainy season, there were accidents and deaths due to children falling into the water due to high currents and carelessness. Although such incidents have been happening for a long time, no initiative has been seen at the community level. Later, through the SALT process, the community's youth team began to discuss the topic of "Cholo Egiye Jai" through the SALT process. In a dream building session with them, one of their dreams came up: "To build a safe community for children in the river." Although there was no initiative from the elders in the beginning, the youth team continued to think about the matter seriously.

In 2025, the death of several children after falling into the river again shook the community. Then the youth team took the initiative on their own without waiting. They put up warning banners along the riverbanks, talked to parents, and started working to create awareness about the importance of children learning to swim. These small initiatives of theirs gradually began to have a positive impact on the community.   By the end of 2025, the number of children dying from falling into the water was significantly reduced.

In 2026, the youth team has been reactivated before the river water rises. They are writing warning messages with colors at various places on the banks of the river and are working to make people aware. Local market vendors are also collaborating in this initiative, which has made the collective participation of the community more visible.

As a result of this program, local parents, children, youth, youth and the elderly are getting the opportunity to be careful, including people coming home from outside on the occasion of Eid. Through Salt, the youth of the community have set an example of positive change by harnessing their strength, sense of responsibility and collective initiative, which will contribute to building a safer community in the future.

বাংলাদেশের একটি উল্লেখযোগ্য নদীর নাম যমুনা। আর এই নদীর পাড়ে পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির অবস্থান। যার কারণে কমিউনিটির বেশিরভাগ মানুষ নদী সাথে সম্পৃক্ত। গোসল করা থেকে শুরু করে দৈনন্দিন জীবনের অনেক কাজ করে থাকে এই নদীতে। গোসল, ধোয়া-মোছা থেকে শুরু করে নানা প্রয়োজনেই শিশু ও বড়রা নিয়মিত নদীতে যায়। তবে জলবায়ুর পরিবর্তনের কারণে প্রতিবছর বর্ষা মৌসুমে নদীর পানি বৃদ্ধি, তীব্র স্রোত এবং অসাবধানতার কারণে শিশুদের পানিতে পড়ে দুর্ঘটনা ও প্রাণহানির ঘটনা ঘটত। দীর্ঘদিন ধরে এমন ঘটনা ঘটলেও কমিউনিটি পর্যায়ে তেমন কোনো উদ্যোগ দেখা যায়নি। পরবর্তীতে সল্ট (SALT) প্রক্রিয়ার  গ্রুপ সল্টের মাধ্যমে কমিউনিটির ইয়ুথ টিম “চল এগিয়ে যাই” এই বিষয়টি তারা নিজেরা আলোচনা শুরু করেছিল। তাদের সঙ্গে একটি ড্রিম বিল্ডিং সেশনে উঠে আসে তাদের একটি স্বপ্ন, “নদীতে শিশুদের জন্য একটি নিরাপদ কমিউনিটি গড়ে তোলা। যদিও শুরুতে বড়দের পক্ষ থেকে তেমন কোনো উদ্যোগ দেখা যায়নি, তবুও ইয়ুথ টিম বিষয়টিকে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে ভাবতে থাকে।

২০২৫ সালে আবারও নদীতে পড়ে কয়েকজন শিশুর মৃত্যুর ঘটনা কমিউনিটিকে নাড়া দেয়। তখন ইয়ুথ টিম অপেক্ষা না করে নিজেরাই সচেতনতামূলক উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করে। তারা নদীর পাড়ে সতর্কতামূলক ব্যানার স্থাপন করে, অভিভাবকদের সাথে কথা বলে এবং শিশুদের সাঁতার শেখার গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে সচেতনতা তৈরি করতে কাজ শুরু করে। তাদের এই ছোট ছোট উদ্যোগ ধীরে ধীরে কমিউনিটিতে ইতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলতে শুরু করে। দেখা যায়, ২০২৫ সালের শেষের দিকে শিশুদের পানিতে পড়ে মৃত্যুর ঘটনা উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে কমে আসে।

বর্তমান ২০২৬ সালে অর্থাৎ এই বছরেও নদীর পানি বৃদ্ধি পাওয়ার আগেই ইয়ুথ টিম পুনরায় সক্রিয় হয়েছে। তারা নদীর পাড়ের বিভিন্ন স্থানে রং দিয়ে সতর্কতামূলক বার্তা লিখছে এবং মানুষকে সচেতন করতে কাজ করছে। এই উদ্যোগে স্থানীয় বাজারের দোকানিরাও সহযোগিতা করছেন, যা কমিউনিটির সম্মিলিত অংশগ্রহণকে আরও দৃশ্যমান করেছে।

এই কার্যক্রমের ফলে ঈদ উপলক্ষে বাইরে থেকে বাড়িতে আসা মানুষসহ স্থানীয় অভিভাবক, শিশু, তরুণ, যুবক ও বয়স্ক সবাই সতর্ক হওয়ার সুযোগ পাচ্ছে। সল্টের মাধ্যমে নিজেদের শক্তি, দায়িত্ববোধ ও সম্মিলিত উদ্যোগকে কাজে লাগিয়ে কমিউনিটির তরুণরা একটি ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তনের উদাহরণ তৈরি করেছে, যা ভবিষ্যতে আরও নিরাপদ কমিউনিটি গঠনে ভূমিকা রাখবে।
