A Story of Dialogue, Trust, and Reconciliation

Bridging Hearts, Restoring Peace: How SALT & CLCP Helped Resolve a Long-Standing Legal Dispute in Sylhet

For many years, ECDO has been working closely with vulnerable and marginalized communities through the Social Action Learning Tool (SALT) and Community Life Competence Process (CLCP), supported by GFC. These approaches have enabled communities to identify their own strengths, build relationships, and find sustainable solutions to complex challenges.
Recently, ECDO witnessed what it considers one of the most significant achievements of the SALT & CLCP approach in its organizational history, a successful reconciliation effort that brought closure to a deeply sensitive legal dispute involving members of the Patro Indigenous Community in Sylhet.

The Tragic Incident
On 25 November 2025, a tragic road accident occurred on a road passing through a tea garden in the Sylhet region. A truck driven by Shakti Patro and his asst. Narayan Patro, members of the Patro Indigenous Community was involved in a collision with a private car traveling toward Sylhet Airport.
The accident resulted in the deaths of three passengers Nasir Ahmmed (Car driver), Ibrahim Ahmmed (24), Mahfuj (21) who were traveling in the car, one at the scene and two later while receiving medical treatment. According to accounts shared by local witnesses, the truck driver was not considered responsible for the incident. Nevertheless, the tragedy left immense grief for the families who lost their loved ones.
Several months later, after the accident, on 13th January 2026 a legal case was filed at Sylhet Airport Police Station by Ebadur Rahman (30), on behalf of one of the deceased victims. As the truck driver belonged to the Patro Indigenous Community, one of ECDO's long-standing beneficiary communities, the community sought ECDO's support in helping address the situation.
Choosing the Path of Dialogue
Recognizing both the sensitivity and complexity of the issue, ECDO convened an internal meeting to explore possible ways forward. After thoughtful discussion, the team agreed that the principles of SALT and CLCP offered the most constructive path.
Rather than focusing solely on legal procedures, ECDO chose to encourage dialogue, understanding, and relationship-building between the concerned parties. The objective was not simply to resolve a case, but to foster mutual understanding and create space for healing. To lead this effort, ECDO assigned Mr. Satyajit Singha Monihar, a dedicated staff member with experience in community engagement and facilitation.

A Journey of Patience and Persistence
The reconciliation process was neither simple nor quick. Over a period of time, Mr. Monihar engaged in a series of respectful conversations and consultations with the families of the deceased and other relevant stakeholders. Guided by the core values of SALT and CLCP, listening, appreciation, empathy, and community ownership, he gradually built trust and opened channels of communication that had previously seemed impossible.

Throughout the process, ECDO's Executive Director, Lakshmikanta Singh, provided continuous guidance, strategic advice, and moral support. His leadership helped ensure that the process remained respectful, ethical, and focused on peaceful resolution. Step by step, barriers were reduced, misunderstandings were addressed, and a spirit of dialogue began to emerge among the parties involved.

A Historic Resolution

The efforts ultimately led to a remarkable outcome.
On May 17, 2026, the guardians and family representatives of the three deceased victims personally appeared before the Sylhet District Court and formally withdrew the case. As a result, the truck driver and his assistant relieved from the legal proceedings and were able to move forward with their regular life.
More importantly, the process allowed both sides to reach an understanding through dialogue rather than prolonged conflict without any Cash.
For ECDO, this achievement represents far more than the withdrawal of a legal case. It demonstrates the transformative power of SALT and CLCP when applied beyond traditional community development activities.
The experience highlights how respectful engagement, patient dialogue, and community-centered approaches can contribute to resolving even highly sensitive and emotionally charged disputes.
At a time when conflicts often become more polarized, this case serves as a powerful reminder that genuine listening, empathy, and trust-building can create pathways toward peace and reconciliation.

A Milestone for ECDO
ECDO considers this reconciliation effort one of its most significant accomplishments in applying the SALT & CLCP methodology. It stands as a testament to the dedication of community members, the commitment of ECDO staff, and the leadership that guided the process from beginning to end.
