Where Rivers Shape Lives: Stories from Char Nakalia, Pabna, Bangladesh

In the riverine landscape of Bangladesh, char communities live with constant uncertainty. Formed by the shifting flow of rivers like the Jamuna, these lands appear during the dry season and often disappear or become submerged during the monsoon. While they create opportunities for agriculture, they also expose communities to severe climate vulnerability.
This reality was deeply visible in Char Nakalia village of Bera Upazila, Pabna, where a Knowledge Fair was organized by BRED (Bangladesh Rural Economic Development), a cohort partner organization of the ARC BD Cohort, with collaboration of communities. Here, climate change is not an abstract concept. It is the part of everyday life. During the rainy season, rising water levels make movement extremely difficult, isolating households and limiting access to services. In contrast, the dry season brings vast sandy char lands along with extreme heat and irregular rainfall. River erosion continuously reshapes the land, threatening homes, livelihoods, and stability.

These challenges are driven by broader climate changes like unpredictable rainfall, rising temperatures, and seasonal extremes that disrupt the natural rhythm of life in char areas. Communities are constantly adapting, often with limited resources.

This Knowledg fair was held on 11 April, 2026 felt different from others I have attended. Unlike typical events where communities mainly present their initiatives, this space created an opportunity to deeply understand community realities, challenges, and future actions.
One of the most meaningful aspects was participating in a Group SALT session, particularly within a group named as "Nobojagron". In this space, community members openly discussed how climate change is affecting their lives—not just what they are doing, but what they are experiencing and planning ahead.

Voices from the Community: Problems, Solutions, and Possibilities.

Through the discussion, several key challenges emerged:

Difficulty in movement during the rainy season
Extreme heat during summer
Irregular rainfall patterns
Ongoing river erosion

Rather than stopping at challenges, the community collectively explored solutions:

Strengthening boat-based transportation during monsoon
Planting more trees to reduce environmental impact
Keeping alternatives like horse carts for mobility
Strengthening riverbanks (embankments) to reduce erosion

What stood out most was their vision for the future. The char land, which emerges during the dry season, was not seen as empty or temporary. Instead, community members imagined using it as a space for:
Local fairs
Playgrounds for children
Community gatherings

This Knowledge Fair shifted my perspective. It moved beyond showcasing initiatives to listening, understanding, and co-reflecting with the community. The Group SALT process created a space where people could express not only their challenges but also their ideas, strengths, and hopes.
In a climate-vulnerable setting like Char Nakalia, such spaces are powerful. They remind us that communities are not just facing problems—they are actively thinking, planning, and shaping their own pathways forward.

বাংলাদেশের নদীবেষ্টিত ভূখণ্ডে চরাঞ্চলের মানুষ সবসময় অনিশ্চয়তার মধ্যে বসবাস করে। যমুনার মতো নদীর গতিপথের পরিবর্তনে গড়ে ওঠা এসব চর শুকনো মৌসুমে জেগে ওঠে, আবার বর্ষায় অনেক সময় ডুবে যায় বা বিলীন হয়ে যায়। একদিকে এগুলো কৃষির সুযোগ তৈরি করে, অন্যদিকে মানুষের জীবনকে চরম জলবায়ু ঝুঁকির মধ্যে ফেলে।
এই বাস্তবতা স্পষ্টভাবে দেখা যায় পাবনা জেলার বেড়া উপজেলার চর নাকালিয়া গ্রামে, যেখানে কমিউনিটির সহযোগিতায় ARC BD Cohort-এর কোহর্ট পার্টনার সংস্থা BRED (Bangladesh Rural Economic Development) একটি নলেজ ফেয়ার আয়োজন করে।
এখানে জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন কোনো তাত্ত্বিক বিষয় নয়—এটি মানুষের প্রতিদিনের জীবনের অংশ। বর্ষা মৌসুমে পানির উচ্চতা বেড়ে যাওয়ায় চলাচল অত্যন্ত কঠিন হয়ে পড়ে, ফলে অনেক পরিবার বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে যায় এবং সেবাগুলোতে পৌঁছানো কঠিন হয়। অন্যদিকে, শুষ্ক মৌসুমে বিশাল বালুচর দেখা যায়, সাথে থাকে তীব্র গরম ও অনিয়মিত বৃষ্টিপাত। নদীভাঙন প্রতিনিয়ত ভূমির চিত্র বদলে দেয়, যা মানুষের বসতভিটা, জীবিকা এবং স্থিতিশীলতাকে হুমকির মুখে ফেলে।
এই চ্যালেঞ্জগুলো মূলত বৃহত্তর জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের প্রভাব—যেমন অনিয়মিত বৃষ্টিপাত, তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধি এবং মৌসুমি বৈচিত্র্যের কারণে—যা চরাঞ্চলের স্বাভাবিক জীবনযাত্রাকে ব্যাহত করছে। সীমিত সম্পদ নিয়ে কমিউনিটির মানুষ প্রতিনিয়ত এই পরিস্থিতির সাথে খাপ খাইয়ে নিচ্ছে।

২০২৬  সালের ১১ এপ্রিল অনুষ্ঠিত এই নলেজ ফেয়ারটি আমার পূর্বের অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে একেবারেই ভিন্ন ছিল। সাধারণত এমন আয়োজনে কমিউনিটির মানুষ তাদের উদ্যোগগুলো উপস্থাপন করে, কিন্তু এখানে একটি ভিন্নধর্মী পরিবেশ তৈরি হয়েছিল—যেখানে কমিউনিটির বাস্তবতা, চ্যালেঞ্জ এবং ভবিষ্যৎ পরিকল্পনা গভীরভাবে বোঝার সুযোগ তৈরি হয়।
এই আয়োজনের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দিক ছিল একটি গ্রুপ SALT সেশনে অংশগ্রহণ, নবজাগরণ নামের গ্রুপে। 

আলোচনা করা হয়—জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন কীভাবে তাদের জীবনে প্রভাব ফেলছে, তারা কী অনুভব করছে এবং ভবিষ্যতে কী করতে চায়।

আলোচনার মাধ্যমে কয়েকটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সমস্যা উঠে আসে:
বর্ষা মৌসুমে চলাচলের অসুবিধা
গ্রীষ্মকালে তীব্র গরম
অনিয়মিত বৃষ্টিপাত
নদীভাঙন
তবে শুধু সমস্যার মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ না থেকে, কমিউনিটি নিজেরাই কিছু সম্ভাব্য সমাধানও খুঁজে বের করেছে:
বর্ষাকালে নৌকা-ভিত্তিক যাতায়াত ব্যবস্থা শক্তিশালী করা
বেশি বেশি গাছ লাগানো
বিকল্প হিসেবে ঘোড়ার গাড়ি ব্যবহার রাখা
নদীর পাড় (বাঁধ) শক্তিশালী করা

সবচেয়ে অনুপ্রেরণাদায়ক বিষয় ছিল তাদের ভবিষ্যৎ ভাবনা। শুকনো মৌসুমে জেগে ওঠা চরভূমিকে তারা শুধু খালি জায়গা হিসেবে দেখেনি, বরং এটিকে তারা ব্যবহার করতে চায়:
স্থানীয় মেলা আয়োজনের জন্য
শিশুদের খেলার মাঠ হিসেবে
কমিউনিটি আয়োজনের স্থান হিসেবে

এই নলেজ ফেয়ার আমার দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিকে বদলে দিয়েছে। এটি শুধুমাত্র উদ্যোগ প্রদর্শনের মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ ছিল না—বরং এটি ছিল শোনা, বোঝা এবং কমিউনিটির সাথে একসাথে ভাবনার একটি জায়গা।
Group SALT প্রক্রিয়া এমন একটি পরিবেশ তৈরি করেছে, যেখানে মানুষ শুধু তাদের সমস্যাই নয়, বরং তাদের ভাবনা, শক্তি এবং আশাগুলোও প্রকাশ করতে পেরেছে।
চর নাকালিয়ার মতো জলবায়ু ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ এলাকায় এ ধরনের উদ্যোগ অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কারণ এটি আমাদের মনে করিয়ে দেয়—কমিউনিটির মানুষ শুধু সমস্যার মুখোমুখি নয়, তারা নিজেরাই চিন্তা করছে, পরিকল্পনা করছে এবং নিজেদের ভবিষ্যৎ গড়ে তোলার পথ তৈরি করছে।
