With the help of Salter, Nahar Apa, a member of the Jaba Group, has today built a nutritious and profitable vegetable garden in her backyard. After joining the Joba Group through Salter, she started cultivating vegetables using the organic fertilizer that several families make in a group-based initiative.
Earlier, Nahar Apa never thought that it was possible to meet her family's needs by cultivating vegetables in a planned manner in her backyard and also make a financial profit. With Salter's inspiration, she got the courage to utilize unused land.
A member of Nahar Apa's family said, If Salter had not inspired her, this place would have remained like this. The thought of starting a vegetable garden like this never crossed our minds.

Currently, various types of vegetables, including red cabbage, cabbage, beans, bitter gourd and gourd, are being cultivated in Nahar Apa's garden. She said that the vegetables from her own garden are much tastier and more nutritious than those bought from the market.
After fulfilling her family's daily vegetable needs, Nahar Apa has been able to sell vegetables worth around Tk 1,300. What is noteworthy is that she did not spend much money on this cultivation. The main input for her vegetable production is organic fertilizer made by herself, without using any chemical fertilizers from outside.

Nahar Apa's initiative proves that, with the right guidance and support, the backyard of the house can be a reliable source of nutrition and income for a family. With the help of Salter, Nahar Apa is today a successful backyard farmer and an example for others to follow.

আঙ্গিনার মাটিতে স্বাবলম্বিতার বীজ নিজের হাতে তৈরি জৈব সারে

সল্টেরের সহায়তায় জবা গ্রুপের সদস্য নাহার আপা আজ নিজের বাড়ির আঙিনায় গড়ে তুলেছেন একটি পুষ্টিসমৃদ্ধ ও লাভজনক সবজির বাগান। সল্টেরের মাধ্যমে জবা গ্রুপে যুক্ত হওয়ার পর দলভিত্তিক উদ্যোগে কয়েকটি পরিবার মিলে যে জৈব সার তৈরি করা হয়, সেই জৈব সার ব্যবহার করেই তিনি সবজি চাষ শুরু করেন।
আগে নাহার আপা কখনো ভাবেননি যে বাড়ির আঙিনায় পরিকল্পিতভাবে সবজি আবাদ করে নিজের পরিবারের চাহিদা পূরণের পাশাপাশি আর্থিকভাবে লাভবান হওয়া সম্ভব। সল্টেরের অনুপ্রেরণায় তিনি অব্যবহৃত জমিকে কাজে লাগানোর সাহস পান।
নাহার আপার পরিবারের সদস্য বলেন—
সল্টেরের মাধ্যমে অনুপ্রাণিত না হলে এই জায়গাটা এমনি পড়ে থাকত। এভাবে সবজির বাগান করার চিন্তাই আমাদের মাথায় আসেনি।
বর্তমানে নাহার আপার বাগানে লাল শাক, বাঁধাকপি, শিম, করলা ও লাউসহ বিভিন্ন ধরনের সবজি চাষ হচ্ছে। বাজার থেকে কেনা সবজির তুলনায় নিজের বাগানের সবজি অনেক বেশি সুস্বাদু ও পুষ্টিকর বলে তিনি জানান।
পরিবারের দৈনন্দিন সবজির চাহিদা পূরণ করার পর নাহার আপা প্রায় ১,৩০০ টাকার সবজি বিক্রি করতে সক্ষম হয়েছেন। উল্লেখযোগ্য বিষয় হলো—এই চাষাবাদে তার তেমন কোনো আর্থিক ব্যয় হয়নি। বাইরে থেকে কোনো রাসায়নিক সার ব্যবহার না করে নিজের হাতে তৈরি জৈব সারই তার সবজি উৎপাদনের প্রধান উপকরণ।

নাহার আপার এই উদ্যোগ প্রমাণ করে, সঠিক দিকনির্দেশনা ও সহায়তা পেলে বাড়ির আঙিনাই হতে পারে একটি পরিবারের পুষ্টি ও আয়ের নির্ভরযোগ্য উৎস। সল্টেরের সহায়তায় নাহার আপা আজ একজন সফল আঙিনা কৃষক এবং অন্যদের জন্য অনুকরণীয় উদাহরণ।
