‎Charbin Para is a geographically isolated community, separated from the nearest town by a river. Nearly three to four thousand people live here, yet one of their most basic rights remains out of reach, access to healthcare. There is no health facility in the community, no designated place for vaccination. Whenever someone falls ill, or when a child needs routine immunisation, families are forced to cross the river to seek medical care. This river is not merely a natural boundary; it represents daily risk, hardship, and uncertainty. For mothers of young children, the journey is especially difficult. During the monsoon season, the river becomes rough and dangerous, boats are often unavailable, and at times the cost of travel itself becomes an insurmountable barrier. These challenges directly affect children’s health. Many mothers are unable to take their children for regular vaccinations due to fear, exhaustion, or the sheer difficulty of the journey. Over time, some lose motivation altogether. As a result, many children suffer from preventable diseases. Gradually, this reality had begun to feel normal, almost like fate.

But the seed of change was planted one day through a simple conversation. A SALT group conversation was organised with men, women, and youth from the Chor bin Para community. No advice was given. No solutions were imposed. Only one question was asked: “What is your dream?” That single question opened the door to emotions that had been quietly accumulating for years. At first, some participants remained silent, others spoke hesitantly. Slowly, one by one, people began to share their experiences, their struggles, their pain, and their hopes. Remarkably, everyone expressed the same dream: to establish a vaccination centre within their own community. One mother said, “I have crossed the river so many times just to vaccinate my child.” Another shared, “During the rainy season, we miss vaccinations because we cannot find a boat." Someone else asked quietly, “Our adolescent girls and pregnant women take so many risks, is this fair?” This was not a distant or abstract dream. It was real, urgent, and collective. It was a plea to protect life. The greatest strength of the SALT conversation is that it does not only help people dream, it helps them take responsibility.

During the discussion, community members themselves decided to take action. Together, they agreed to submit an application to the Civil Surgeon’s office to request the establishment of a vaccination centre in Chorbin Para. At the office, they learned that the application would require the signatures of at least one thousand community members to be considered. At first, this condition felt overwhelming. Many wondered, “How will we ever collect so many signatures?” This is where the true transformation of the SALT process became visible. With the support of Ashirbad, the application forms were collected. Then the responsibility was taken up by the young women of the community’s youth team. Day and night, they went from house to house, speaking with families, explaining the importance of the application. Some people were ill, some were busy with work, some were doubtful at first, but the youth did not give up. Braving heat, rain, and exhaustion, they eventually collected nearly one thousand signatures. This process achieved more than its immediate goal; it built a sense of collective confidence. People began to realise, “We can do this. Our voices matter.”

The application was finally submitted to the Civil Surgeon’s office. Now, the entire community waits with hope, for the day their dream becomes reality. For the people of Charbin Para, this long-held dream is clear: a vaccination centre within their own community, where young children can receive timely immunisation, adolescent girls can receive TT vaccines at the age of fifteen, and pregnant women can safely access essential vaccinations, without the risk and hardship of crossing the river. This centre will not be just a building. It will be a symbol of safety, awareness, and dignity. SALT Conversations: The Quiet Power of Change. This entire journey has deeply moved me. Through SALT conversations, people begin to recognise their own strength and capacity. No one is talked down to. No one sits above others to dictate solutions. People find their own path. Slowly, mindsets change. People become more responsible. They learn to trust themselves. Truly, SALT conversations have the power to transform lives, because when people learn to speak, the journey of change begins. The story of Charbin Para is living proof of that.

চরবিন পাড়া, নদীর ওপারে থাকা শহর থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন একটি কমিউনিটি। এখানে প্রায় তিন থেকে চার হাজার মানুষের বসবাস। মানুষের সংখ্যা অনেক হলেও মৌলিক একটি অধিকার আজও তাদের নাগালের বাইরে, স্বাস্থ্যসেবা। এই পুরো কমিউনিটিতে নেই কোনো স্বাস্থ্যসেবা কেন্দ্র, নেই টিকাদানের নির্দিষ্ট জায়গা। অসুখ-বিসুখ হলে কিংবা শিশুকে টিকা দিতে হলে মানুষকে যেতে হয় নদীর ওপার। এই নদী শুধু একটি প্রাকৃতিক বাধা নয়, এটি যেন প্রতিদিনের জীবনে ঝুঁকি, ভোগান্তি আর অনিশ্চয়তার প্রতীক। বিশেষ করে ছোট ছোট শিশুদের মায়েদের জন্য এই পথ পাড়ি দেওয়া অত্যন্ত কষ্টসাধ্য। বর্ষাকালে নদী উত্তাল হয়, নৌকা পাওয়া যায় না, আবার কখনো অর্থের অভাবও বড় বাধা হয়ে দাঁড়ায়। এর সরাসরি প্রভাব পড়ে শিশুদের জীবনে। অনেক সময় দূরে যাওয়ার ঝামেলা, ভয় আর ক্লান্তির কারণে মায়েরা শিশুদের নিয়মিত টিকা দিতে পারেন না। কেউ কেউ আগ্রহ হারিয়ে ফেলেন। এর ফলশ্রুতিতে অনেক শিশু সহজেই প্রতিরোধযোগ্য রোগে আক্রান্ত হয়। এই বাস্তবতা ধীরে ধীরে স্বাভাবিক হয়ে উঠেছিল, যেন এটাই তাদের নিয়তি। কিন্তু পরিবর্তনের বীজ বোনা হয় একদিন, একটি কথোপকথনের মাধ্যমে। চরবিন পাড়া কমিউনিটির পুরুষ, মহিলা ও ইয়োথদের নিয়ে একটি SALT গ্রুপ কনভারসেশন আয়োজন করা হয়। সেখানে কোনো উপদেশ দেওয়া হয়নি, কোনো সমাধান চাপিয়ে দেওয়া হয়নি। শুধু একটি প্রশ্ন করা হয়েছিল, “আপনাদের স্বপ্ন কী?” এই প্রশ্ন যেন বহুদিন জমে থাকা অনুভূতির দরজা খুলে দেয়। আলোচনার শুরুতে কেউ কেউ চুপ ছিলেন, কেউ সংকোচে কথা বলছিলেন। কিন্তু ধীরে ধীরে, একজনের পর একজন নিজের অভিজ্ঞতা, কষ্ট আর চাওয়ার কথা বলতে শুরু করেন। আর আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে, সবার মুখে ঘুরে ফিরে আসে একটি মাত্র স্বপ্ন, নিজেদের কমিউনিটিতে একটি টিকাদান কেন্দ্র। কেউ বললেন, “আমার বাচ্চাকে টিকা দিতে গিয়ে কতবার নদীর ওপারে যেতে হয়েছে।” কেউ বললেন, “বর্ষার সময় নৌকা না পেয়ে টিকা মিস হয়েছে।” কেউ আবার বললেন, “আমাদের মেয়েরা, গর্ভবতী নারীরা কত ঝুঁকি নেয়, এটা কি ন্যায্য?” এই স্বপ্ন ছিল বাস্তব, প্রয়োজনীয় এবং যৌথ। এটি কোনো দূরের কল্পনা নয়, বরং জীবন বাঁচানোর আকুতি। SALT কনভারসেশনের সবচেয়ে বড় শক্তি হলো, এটি মানুষকে কেবল স্বপ্ন দেখায় না, দায়িত্ব নিতে শেখায়। আলোচনার মধ্যেই কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা সিদ্ধান্ত নেন, তারা নিজেরাই উদ্যোগ নেবেন। সবাই মিলে ঠিক করেন, সিভিল সার্জনের কার্যালয়ে আবেদন করবেন টিকাদান কেন্দ্র স্থাপনের জন্য। সেখানে গিয়ে তারা জানতে পারেন, এই আবেদন গ্রহণযোগ্য করতে হলে কমিউনিটির অন্তত এক হাজার মানুষের স্বাক্ষরসহ একটি লিখিত আবেদন জমা দিতে হবে। প্রথমে এই শর্ত শুনে অনেকের মনেই ভয় ঢুকে পড়ে, “এত মানুষের স্বাক্ষর কীভাবে জোগাড় হবে?” কিন্তু এখানেই SALT প্রক্রিয়ার আসল পরিবর্তনটা দেখা যায়। আশীর্বাদ সংস্থার সহায়তায় আবেদনপত্র সংগ্রহ করা হয়। এরপর দায়িত্ব নেয় কমিউনিটির ইয়োথ টিমের মেয়েরা। দিন-রাত পরিশ্রম করে তারা ঘরে ঘরে যান, মানুষের সঙ্গে কথা বলেন, আবেদনটির গুরুত্ব বোঝান। কেউ অসুস্থ, কেউ কাজে ব্যস্ত, কেউ প্রথমে সন্দিহান, তবুও তারা হাল ছাড়েননি।
‎রোদ, বৃষ্টি, ক্লান্তি, সবকিছুকে পেছনে ফেলে তারা এক হাজার মানুষের স্বাক্ষর সংগ্রহ করেন। এই প্রক্রিয়ায় শুধু স্বাক্ষর সংগ্রহ হয়নি, তৈরি হয়েছে এক ধরনের সম্মিলিত আত্মবিশ্বাস। মানুষ বুঝতে শুরু করেছে, “আমরাও পারি। আমাদের কণ্ঠস্বরের মূল্য আছে।” অবশেষে সেই আবেদন সিভিল সার্জনের কার্যালয়ে জমা দেওয়া হয়। এখন পুরো কমিউনিটি আশার চোখে অপেক্ষা করছে, নিজেদের স্বপ্ন বাস্তবে রূপ নেবে সেই দিনের। চরবিন পাড়া কমিউনিটির মানুষের বহুদিনের স্বপ্ন, নিজেদের কমিউনিটিতে একটি টিকাদান কেন্দ্র স্থাপন হবে। যেখানে, ছোট ছোট শিশুরা নিয়মিত ও সময়মতো টিকা পাবে। কিশোরী মেয়েরা ১৫ বছর বয়সে টিটি টিকা নিতে পারবে। গর্ভবতী নারীরা নিরাপদে টিকা গ্রহণ করতে পারবেন। নদীর ওপারে ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ যাত্রার প্রয়োজন হবে না। এটি শুধু একটি কেন্দ্র নয়, এটি হবে নিরাপত্তা, সচেতনতা ও মর্যাদার প্রতীক। SALT কনভারসেশন: পরিবর্তনের নীরব শক্তি। এই পুরো যাত্রা আমাকে গভীরভাবে নাড়া দিয়েছে। SALT কনভারসেশনের মাধ্যমে মানুষ খুব সহজেই নিজের শক্তি ও সক্ষমতাকে চিনতে পারে। এখানে কেউ কাউকে ছোট করে না, কেউ উপরে বসে সমাধান দেয় না। মানুষ নিজেই নিজের পথ খুঁজে নেয়। এই প্রক্রিয়ায় ধীরে ধীরে মানুষের চিন্তাধারা বদলায়। তারা দায়িত্বশীল হয়ে ওঠে। নিজেদের ওপর বিশ্বাস রাখতে শেখে। সত্যিই, SALT কনভারসেশন মানুষকে বদলে দিতে পারে। কারণ যখন মানুষ কথা বলতে শেখে, তখনই পরিবর্তনের যাত্রা শুরু হয়। চরবিন পাড়ার এই গল্প তারই প্রমাণ।

সমস্যা যেমন নিজেদের মধ্যে থেকে হয় সমাধানো তেমন নিজেদের মধ্যে দিয়েই হয়।
কিন্তু সমাধান করার সেই সাহস, উৎসাহ, উদ্দীপনা জাগিয়ে সকলকে একত্রিত করানোর যে অনুভবটা সেটা সল্টের মাধ্যমেই সম্ভব। ধন্যবাদ আপু এতো ভালো উদ্যোগ এতো সুন্দর করে শেয়ার করার জন্য।
