Awakening of Silent Talents: New Light Through SALT Conversations “Alor Poth” নীরব প্রতিভার জাগরণ: SALT কনভারসেশনে নতুন আলো "আলোর পথ"

SALT Conversations are about discovering the strengths, potential, and dreams that lie within people. When we engage in SALT Conversations within communities, we repeatedly observe that people themselves are the greatest resource for their own change. Through this process, we often uncover the remarkable talents of children and adolescents, talents that frequently remain hidden or unrecognized by families and society. A similar experience unfolded during our SALT Conversations in Harijan Palli, located in the central area of Mymensingh city. While conducting SALT Conversations in Harijan Palli, we noticed that many children and young people possess exceptional skills in drawing, singing, drama, and various musical instruments. Some sing beautifully, some play the tabla with great skill, others play the dhol or guitar, and some are proficient in more than one instrument. What was most striking was that most of these talents had been learned within their own families. Parents or elder family members had passed on these cultural practices to them. The first time the children performed songs and played musical instruments in front of us, we listened in complete silence. Amazement, joy, and pride blended together in that moment. We had never imagined that such rich cultural talent was quietly growing within Horijan Polli. As the SALT Conversations deepened, we came to understand that there were two major barriers to the development of these talents:

1. Family attitudes
2. Lack of a specific space for practice

It was particularly intriguing that resistance was coming from families who themselves had once been involved in music and cultural activities. This prompted further exploration. Our facilitators then conducted separate SALT Conversations with the parents of the children. During these discussions, parents clearly expressed their concerns: “These activities do not generate income. Engaging in them will ruin our children’s future.” Because of this belief, they had not been offering encouragement or support to their children. However, through not just one but several rounds of SALT Conversations, the direction of these discussions gradually began to change. Parents were invited to reflect on their own childhood talents and memories of music and cultural practice, and their skills and creativity from that time were acknowledged and appreciated. Through this process, parents began to realize that developing talent is not only about earning money. It is also crucial for preserving culture, building identity, and supporting mental and emotional development. Eventually, they started having open conversations with their children and encouraging them to practice more seriously. Some parents even committed to providing the necessary materials to support their children’s interests. Horijan Polli is a densely populated area. With many people living in a limited space, the shortage of physical space is a serious challenge. During a group SALT Conversation, the children and adolescents themselves raised this issue, explaining that they had no designated place to practice their talents. Through collective discussion, they identified a possible solution on their own. They noted that there is a school within the community where cultural programs are occasionally held. They felt that if they could obtain permission to use one classroom, it would create a valuable opportunity for regular practice. At first, they were afraid. Being young, they felt intimidated about speaking with community leaders. At that point, our role was simple, to encourage them. We knew that previous SALT Conversations with community leaders had already led to positive changes in attitudes. We were confident that the leaders would take this issue seriously. Gathering their courage, the children approached the community leaders themselves. Within two or three days, we received the good news: permission had been granted to use one of the school rooms. Although there would be limitations due to school activities and cultural events, this was still a major achievement for them. We reassured the children that whenever they needed space for practice, they could also come to our office. Here, they would be provided with opportunities to nurture and develop their talents. Through this entire journey, the children formed a group. Not only that, they chose a meaningful name for themselves. The name of their group is “Alor Poth” (Path of Light). The name itself captures the essence of their story. The Power of SALT: Deep Even When Not Immediately Visible. Some changes are not instantly visible. But when observed deeply, they become as clear as daylight. This entire story highlights several important truths: communities are capable of solving their own problems, SALT Conversations help build friendly and open relationships between parents and children, and when mindsets change, new pathways of possibility emerge. The journey of the children and adolescents of Harijan Palli reminds us once again that light does not always come from outside. Often, it is born from within people themselves.

‎SALT কনভারসেশন মানে মানুষের ভেতরে লুকিয়ে থাকা শক্তি, সম্ভাবনা ও স্বপ্নকে আবিষ্কার করা। যখন আমরা কমিউনিটিতে SALT কনভারসেশন করি, তখন বারবারই দেখি, মানুষ নিজেই তার পরিবর্তনের সবচেয়ে বড় সম্পদ। এই প্রক্রিয়ায় আমরা প্রায়ই শিশু ও কিশোরদের ভেতরে থাকা অসাধারণ প্রতিভার খোঁজ পাই, যা অনেক সময় পরিবার কিংবা সমাজের অজান্তেই চাপা পড়ে থাকে। ঠিক এমনই এক অভিজ্ঞতা আমাদের হয়েছে ময়মনসিংহ শহরের মধ্যবর্তী অঞ্চলে অবস্থিত হরিজন পল্লীতে SALT কনভারসেশনের সময়। হরিজন পল্লীতে SALT কনভারসেশন করতে গিয়ে আমরা লক্ষ্য করি, এখানে এমন অনেক ছেলে–মেয়ে আছে যারা চিত্রাঙ্কন, গান, নাটক এবং বিভিন্ন ধরনের বাদ্যযন্ত্রে অসাধারণ পারদর্শী। কেউ সুন্দর করে গান গাইতে পারে, কেউ তবলা বাজায় দক্ষ হাতে, কেউ ঢোল বাজাতে জানে, কেউ গিটার, আবার কেউ একাধিক বাদ্যযন্ত্রে পারদর্শী। সবচেয়ে বিস্ময়কর বিষয় ছিল, এই প্রতিভাগুলোর অধিকাংশই তারা শিখেছে নিজেদের পরিবার থেকেই। বাবা–মা কিংবা পরিবারের প্রবীণ সদস্যদের কাছ থেকে তারা এই সাংস্কৃতিক চর্চার বীজ পেয়েছে। প্রথমবার যখন তারা আমাদের সামনে গান ও বাদ্যযন্ত্র পরিবেশন করলো, আমরা সবাই নিঃশব্দ হয়ে শুনছিলাম। বিস্ময়, আনন্দ আর গর্ব একসাথে মিশে গিয়েছিল সেই মুহূর্তে। আগে কখনো আমরা ভাবিনি, হরিজন পল্লীর ভেতরে এত সমৃদ্ধ সাংস্কৃতিক প্রতিভা নীরবে বেড়ে উঠছে। SALT কনভারসেশনের গভীরে যেতে যেতে আমরা বুঝতে পারি, এই প্রতিভাগুলোর বিকাশের পথে মূলত দুটি বড় বাধা রয়েছে:

‎1. পরিবারের মনোভাব

‎2. নির্দিষ্ট চর্চা করার জায়গার অভাব

‎যে পরিবারগুলো একসময় নিজেরাই গান-বাজনার সঙ্গে যুক্ত ছিল, সেখান থেকেই এখন বাধা আসছে। এই বিষয়টি আমাদের কৌতূহলী করে তোলে। আমাদের ফ্যাসিলিটররা তখন শিশু–কিশোরদের বাবা–মায়েদের সঙ্গে আলাদাভাবে SALT কনভারসেশন করেন। সেখানে বাবা–মায়েরা স্পষ্টভাবে বলেন, “এইসব দিয়ে টাকা রোজগার হয় না। এতে ছেলেমেয়েদের ভবিষ্যৎ নষ্ট হবে।” এই বিশ্বাস থেকেই তারা তাদের সন্তানদের কোনো ধরনের উৎসাহ বা সমর্থন দিচ্ছিলেন না। তবে একবার নয়, ক্রমাগত কয়েক দফা SALT কনভারসেশনের মাধ্যমে ধীরে ধীরে আলোচনার দিক পাল্টাতে থাকে। বাবা–মায়েদের নিজেদের শৈশবের প্রতিভা, গান-বাজনার স্মৃতি নিয়ে কথা বলা হয়। তাদের সেই সময়ের দক্ষতা ও সৃজনশীলতার জন্য প্রশংসা করা হয়। এই প্রক্রিয়ার মধ্য দিয়েই তারা উপলব্ধি করতে শুরু করেন, প্রতিভার বিকাশ শুধুমাত্র অর্থ উপার্জনের জন্য নয়। এটি সংস্কৃতি রক্ষা, আত্মপরিচয় গঠন এবং মানসিক বিকাশের জন্যও অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। একসময় তারা নিজেরাই সন্তানদের সঙ্গে খোলামেলা আলোচনা করেন এবং প্রতিভা চর্চায় উৎসাহ দিতে শুরু করেন। এমনকি প্রয়োজনীয় সামগ্রী কিনে দেওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতিও দেন। হরিজন পল্লী একটি ঘনবসতিপূর্ণ এলাকা। অল্প জায়গায় অনেক মানুষের বসবাসের কারণে এখানে জায়গার অভাব প্রকট। গ্রুপ SALT কনভারসেশনের সময় শিশু–কিশোররা নিজেরাই এই সমস্যাটি তুলে ধরে। তাদের প্রতিভা চর্চার জন্য কোনো নির্দিষ্ট জায়গা নেই। আলোচনার মধ্য দিয়েই তারা নিজেরাই সমাধানের পথ খুঁজে বের করে। তারা মনে করে, কমিউনিটির ভেতরে থাকা স্কুলে যেহেতু মাঝে মাঝে সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান হয়, সেখানে যদি একটি কক্ষ ব্যবহারের অনুমতি পাওয়া যায়, তাহলে চর্চার জন্য ভালো সুযোগ তৈরি হতে পারে। শুরুতে তারা ভয় পাচ্ছিল, কারণ তারা ছোট, আর কমিউনিটি লিডারদের সঙ্গে কথা বলাটা তাদের কাছে কঠিন মনে হচ্ছিল। তখন আমরা তাদের পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে শুধু একটি কাজই করি, উৎসাহ দেওয়া। আমরা জানতাম, আগের SALT কনভারসেশনগুলোর মাধ্যমে কমিউনিটি লিডারদের মধ্যেও ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন এসেছে। তাই আমরা দৃঢ়ভাবে বিশ্বাস করতাম, তারা এই বিষয়টিকে গুরুত্ব দিয়েই দেখবেন। অবশেষে সাহস করে শিশুরা নিজেরাই লিডারদের কাছে যায়। দুই–তিন দিনের মধ্যেই আমরা সুখবর পাই, তারা স্কুলের একটি কক্ষ ব্যবহারের অনুমতি পেয়েছে। যদিও স্কুলের কার্যক্রম ও সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানের সময় কিছু সীমাবদ্ধতা থাকবে, তবুও এটি ছিল তাদের জন্য একটি বড় অর্জন। আমরা তাদের আশ্বস্ত করি, যখনই চর্চার জন্য জায়গার প্রয়োজন হবে, তারা আমাদের অফিসে আসতে পারবে। এখানে তাদের প্রতিভা বিকাশের জন্য সব ধরনের সুযোগ দেওয়া হবে। এই পুরো যাত্রার মধ্য দিয়েই তারা একটি দল গঠন করে। শুধু দলই নয়, তারা নিজেরাই দলের জন্য একটি সুন্দর নাম বেছে নেয়।

‎এই নামটাই যেন তাদের গল্পের সারকথা। SALT-এর শক্তি: দৃশ্যমান না হলেও গভীর কিছু পরিবর্তন চোখে দেখা যায় না। কিন্তু গভীরভাবে অনুধাবন করলে তা দিনের আলোর মতো স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে। এই পুরো গল্প থেকে কয়েকটি বিষয় পরিষ্কারভাবে সামনে আসে, কমিউনিটি নিজেই নিজের সমস্যা সমাধানে এগিয়ে আসতে পারে, SALT কনভারসেশনের মাধ্যমে সন্তান ও বাবা–মায়ের মধ্যে বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ সম্পর্ক তৈরি হয়, মানুষের মনোভাব বদলালে সম্ভাবনার নতুন পথ খুলে যায়। হরিজন পল্লীর শিশু–কিশোরদের এই যাত্রা আমাদের আবারও মনে করিয়ে দেয়, আলো সবসময় বাইরে থেকে আসে না। অনেক সময় আলো জন্ম নেয় মানুষের ভেতরেই।

আবির ভাই, হরিজন পল্লীর শিশু–কিশোরদের প্রতিভা আপনি যেভাবে তাদের নিজস্ব কণ্ঠে, নিজস্ব অভিজ্ঞতার আলোকে তুলে ধরেছেন-তা এই লেখার সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী ও হৃদয়স্পর্শী দিক। এখানে তারা কোনোভাবেই ‘সাহায্যপ্রার্থী’ হিসেবে উপস্থিত নয়, বরং তারা নিজেরাই চিন্তা করছে, সিদ্ধান্ত নিচ্ছে এবং নিজেদের সমস্যার সমাধানের পথ খুঁজে নিচ্ছে। এই উপস্থাপনাটি তাদের সক্ষমতা ও আত্মমর্যাদাকে সুন্দরভাবে সম্মান জানায়।
