(When Listening Became the First Step)

A meeting was planned in this settlement to discuss CLCP. We came here not merely to conduct a meeting, but to understand people’s lives—their struggles, concerns, and ways of thinking. In the beginning, community members were hesitant; some remained silent while others simply observed. We did not start the meeting with a questionnaire. Instead, we sat on the ground with them and began a conversation.

Gradually, the discussion began to open up. Some spoke about water-related issues, others about livelihood challenges, and some shared their concerns regarding their children’s future. When one woman voiced her thoughts, it gave other women the confidence to speak as well. This was not just a discussion about problems, but a process of listening to and understanding one another.

During the SALT interaction, we realized that solutions do not need to be brought from outside. The community already has its own experiences and understanding. Our role was simply to create space for their voices and to build trust among them.

As we were returning after this small meeting, there was a different kind of brightness on people’s faces. Although no decisions were made and no plans were finalized, a beginning had taken place—a beginning of dialogue, trust, and collective thinking about the way forward.

इस बस्ती में CLCP को लेकर एक बैठक करना था। हम यहाँ लोगों की ज़िंदगी, उनकी परेशानियाँ और उनकी सोच को समझने आए थे। शुरुआत में लोग थोड़ा झिझक रहे थे—कुछ चुप थे और कुछ केवल देख रहे थे। हमने किसी प्रश्नावली के साथ बैठक शुरू नहीं की। हम बस ज़मीन पर उनके साथ बैठे और बातचीत शुरू की।

धीरे-धीरे बातचीत खुलने लगी। किसी ने पानी की समस्या बताई, किसी ने रोज़गार की, तो किसी ने बच्चों के भविष्य को लेकर अपनी चिंता साझा की। जब एक महिला ने अपनी बात रखी, तो दूसरी महिलाओं को भी बोलने का हौसला मिला। यह केवल समस्याओं की चर्चा नहीं थी, बल्कि एक-दूसरे को सुनने और समझने की प्रक्रिया थी।

SALT के दौरान हमें यह एहसास हुआ कि समाधान बाहर से लाने की ज़रूरत नहीं है। समुदाय के लोगों के पास अपना अनुभव और समझ पहले से मौजूद है। हमारा काम सिर्फ़ इतना था कि हम उनकी बातों को जगह दें और उनमें विश्वास पैदा करें।

इस छोटी-सी बैठक के बाद जब हम वापस लौट रहे थे, तो लोगों के चेहरों पर एक अलग तरह की चमक थी। भले ही कोई निर्णय नहीं हुआ था और कोई योजना तय नहीं हुई थी, लेकिन एक शुरुआत हो चुकी थी—बातचीत की, विश्वास की और मिलकर आगे सोचने की।

इस पूरी प्रक्रिया को संभव बनाने में Safe Society और GFC का विशेष धन्यवाद। उनके सहयोग और मार्गदर्शन से ही यह संवाद और विश्वास का सफ़र शुरू हो सका।
