In the narrow lanes of Bhatpara (Nichhe Line Area), an ordinary night turned into an extraordinary moment of humanity and courage.
During a SALT conversation, Premika Ji (34 years old) shared the proudest moment of her life—a story that reflects the power of compassion, community, and women’s courage.
A Crisis in the Night
It was around 10 PM when panic spread through the neighborhood. A young man suddenly developed severe stomach pain. At home with him were only his elderly parents, helpless and distressed, unable to take him to the hospital.
The news reached Premika Ji. Without wasting a single moment, she called for an ambulance and chose to personally accompany him—something that many would hesitate to do at such a late hour.
The Journey Through Hospitals
The ambulance first rushed to the local hospital in Bhatpara. But seeing how critical the situation was, doctors immediately referred him to Lothabari Hospital.
Even then, treatment wasn’t possible, and he had to be shifted again—this time to the Alipurduar District Hospital.
By then, night had deepened. The roads were empty, the journey long and tense. Yet, Premika Ji stood strong—fearless, determined, and unwavering.
Finally, the young man was admitted at the district hospital, where doctors could give him timely and proper care.
A Moment of Pride and Humanity
Recalling that long night, Premika Ji smiled and said:
“In life, beyond studies or career, I felt the greatest pride on that night when I fulfilled my duty to humanity by standing for my neighbor.”
Her words remind us that true pride doesn’t always come from achievements or milestones—it often comes from choosing humanity above all else.
Lessons from Premika Ji’s Story
Strength of Community: In moments of crisis, it is often neighbors, not institutions, who extend the first hand of support.
Women’s Empowerment: Stepping out late at night and handling a life-and-death situation, Premika Ji demonstrated the powerful role women play in society.
True Meaning of Humanity: A selfless act to save someone’s life is one of the highest callings we can answer.
Towards a Sensitive Society: One person’s courage can spark inspiration across an entire community.
Reflection from the Conversation
When asked what she liked most about sharing her story, Premika Ji revealed something touching:
This was the first time she had shared this proud moment with anyone.
Telling the story made her heart feel lighter, as if a weight had been lifted.
She felt new confidence that if such a situation ever arises again, she will step forward without hesitation.
The dialogue gave her renewed energy and commitment to serve her community.
When asked how the conversation could be improved, she thoughtfully said:
“If my parents had also been part of the dialogue, they too would have felt connected, and all of us could have learned and reflected more deeply together.”
Closing Thoughts
The story of Premika Ji from Bhatpara is not just about one woman’s courage. It is a mirror for our society—reminding us that in the darkest moments, light shines through the quiet strength of people who dare to care.
Her act shows us that humanity is not defined by big actions alone, but by timely, compassionate choices that save lives and inspire others.
