Shivraj Khariya – A Proud Story of a Young Man

Hidden amidst the serene greenery and hardworking life of Bhatpara Tea Garden (Basa Line Area) lives a young man whose thoughts and actions reflect the best of humanity.

Recently, during a SALT conversation with 23‑year‑old Shivraj Khariya, I had the privilege of listening to his Proud Story. 

What I found was not just a personal story but a glimpse into the heart of a community. His simplicity, spirit of service, and positive outlook deeply touched me.

✨ The Spirit of Service

For Shivraj, helping others is not a duty, but a joy.

Whenever an elderly person, a child, or any villager suddenly falls ill, Shivraj is the first to step forward.

He takes patients to the hospital,

Assists them in treatment,

And if there is no one to purchase the medicines, he brings them himself.

Even if the medicines are not available locally, he does not hesitate to travel to Lothabari Hospital, Hamiltonganj, or Kalchini dispensaries — no matter the distance.

In his own words:

💬 “Helping others is my greatest happiness and my biggest pride.”

🌱 Vision for Children and Youth

Shivraj’s dream is tied to the children of his village. He encourages them every day with these words:

💬 “Study well, and along with studies, also take part in sports.”

He observed that in the past, children hardly participated in sports. But a few years ago, after one memorable village match, the children discovered that with determination, even stronger teams could be defeated.

Since then, a new mindset has taken root — today children are aspiring to grow both in education and sports, building a balanced future for themselves.

👪 Responsibility Towards Parents and Community

When I gently asked Shivraj about his own personal goals in life, he grew emotional and replied:

💬 “My dream is the same as my parents’ dream. Fulfilling that is my greatest responsibility.”

This humility extends to his wider community. Shivraj explained how unity brings strength:

During weddings, the entire village comes together to help.

During sickness, neighbors support one another.

Even the village temple stands today as proof of collective effort — built brick by brick with contributions from all.

For Shivraj, this togetherness is the true identity of his village.

💬 Honest Conversation and Openness

Towards the end of our conversation, I asked him:

👉 “What was good for you today?”

With a smile he replied:

💬 “Sharing my thoughts with you. This was the first time I spoke so openly, and because I know you, I felt no hesitation.”

When I asked him what could have made the experience even better, he thoughtfully said:

💬 “If 20–25 more people had also joined, it would have been better, because we would have heard their views and thoughts too.”

This simple statement reflects Shivraj’s collective spirit and openness to dialogue.

He is a youth with vision — a role model for children, a believer in collective strength, and a true citizen who unites his community.
