Horijan Polli is a densely populated community where many struggle daily to survive. Among them lives Ripon Horijan. At first glance, he appears to be an ordinary man, leading a simple life. Yet within him lies an extraordinary strength, an unshakable will to serve people and uplift his community. Ripon works as a sanitation worker. To meet household expenses and ensure his children’s education, he holds not one, but two jobs. His day begins at dawn and ends late at night. Despite this exhausting routine, he never complains. He believes his responsibility does not end with his own family; he also carries a duty towards his community. While many view sanitation work as limited to cleaning waste, Ripon has broken this perception. He strongly believes:
“Sanitation is not just a profession, it is a powerful tool for social change.” We first met Ripon during a SALT conversation. As we spoke, it became clear that he was not only a dreamer, but also a doer—someone determined to turn vision into action. With visible enthusiasm, he shared:
“I know others who think like me and want to contribute to change. I can introduce you to them.” This revealed that Ripon was not alone; in his heart, he carried the vision of building a collective movement. Inspired by his initiative, a group of like-minded people came together and agreed to:

1. Keep community roads and drains clean.

2. Raise awareness against littering.

3. Educate children and youth on hygiene and health.

4. Support each other in creating a safe, healthy environment.

In the beginning, many showed interest, but over time, some drifted away due to personal commitments. Still, Ripon never stopped. His journey was far from easy, he often faced mockery. Some asked, “What’s the use of so much effort?” Others said, “This is the municipality’s job why take the burden on yourself?” Ripon ignored the criticism. With determination, he cleaned drains alone, removed garbage piles with his own hands, and worked in places where even standing was difficult due to the stench. Gradually, his resilience won people’s hearts. Those who once criticized him began to join in. Children picked up waste bags, held brooms, and worked beside him. Slowly, the entire community realized: change is possible, when someone dares to take the first step. Ripon did not stop at sanitation. He built connections with NGOs and social organizations to bring further support to the community. Whether it was education, healthcare, or relief materials, he ensured that resources reached those who needed them most. Alongside this, he maintained a strong relationship with our organization, regularly visiting our office, seeking advice, and collaborating on initiatives. Today, Ripon Horizon is not only a sanitation worker; he stands as a symbol of inspiration in Horizon Palli. His tireless efforts prove that an ordinary person can bring extraordinary change, if guided by determination and sincerity. Change begins with one person. When you take the first step with courage, others will eventually stand with you.  ‎

‎হরিজন পল্লী, একটি ঘনবসতিপূর্ণ এলাকা, যেখানে অনেকেই প্রতিদিনের জীবনযুদ্ধে টিকে থাকার জন্য লড়াই করে চলেছেন। এখানেই বাস করেন রিপন হরিজন। তিনি দেখতে সাধারণ, জীবনযাপনও তেমন জাঁকজমকপূর্ণ নয়। কিন্তু তার হৃদয়ের গভীরে লুকিয়ে আছে অসাধারণ এক শক্তি, মানুষের জন্য, নিজের কমিউনিটির জন্য কিছু করার অক্লান্ত ইচ্ছা। রিপন পেশায় একজন পরিচ্ছন্নতা কর্মী। সংসারের চাহিদা পূরণ আর সন্তানদের শিক্ষার খরচ মেটাতে তিনি এক নয়, দুই জায়গায় কাজ করেন। ভোর থেকে শুরু হয় তার দিন, আর শেষ হয় গভীর রাতে। ব্যস্ততার মাঝেও তিনি কখনো অভিযোগ করেন না। কারণ তিনি জানেন, তার দায়িত্ব শুধু নিজের পরিবারেই সীমাবদ্ধ নয়, বরং তিনি তার কমিউনিটির জন্যও দায়বদ্ধ। অনেকে মনে করে, পরিচ্ছন্নতা কর্মীদের জীবন শুধু ময়লা পরিষ্কারেই সীমাবদ্ধ। কিন্তু রিপন এই ধারণা ভেঙে দিয়েছেন। তিনি বিশ্বাস করেন "পরিচ্ছন্নতা কেবল একটি পেশা নয়, এটি সমাজ পরিবর্তনের একটি শক্তিশালী মাধ্যম।" আমরা প্রথম রিপনের সাথে দেখা করি SALT কনভারসেশনের সময়। আলাপচারিতার এক পর্যায়ে বুঝতে পারলাম, তিনি শুধু স্বপ্ন দেখেন না, স্বপ্নকে বাস্তবে রূপ দেওয়ার জন্য কাজও করেন। তার চোখেমুখে স্পষ্ট ছিল এক ধরনের আগ্রহ ও দায়িত্ববোধ। যখন আমরা তাকে বললাম, ‎"আমরা এমন মানুষ খুঁজছি যারা কমিউনিটির উন্নয়নে আন্তরিকভাবে কিছু করতে চায়," তখন তিনি উচ্ছ্বসিত হয়ে বললেন, "আমি এমন আরও কিছু মানুষকে চিনি যারা আপনাদের কথার সঙ্গে একমত এবং আগ্রহী। চাইলে আমি আপনাদের তাদের সঙ্গে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিতে পারি।" এই কথায় বোঝা গেল, তিনি কেবল একা নন, বরং পরিবর্তনের একটি বড় চক্র তৈরি করার পরিকল্পনাও তার মনে রয়েছে। রিপনের প্রচেষ্টায় কয়েকজন স্বপ্নবাজ মানুষ একত্রিত হলেন। তারা সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন,
‎1. কমিউনিটির রাস্তা ও ড্রেন নিয়মিত পরিষ্কার রাখা।
‎2. ময়লা-আবর্জনা যেখানে-সেখানে না ফেলার সচেতনতা তৈরি।
‎3. শিশু ও কিশোরদের পরিচ্ছন্নতা ও স্বাস্থ্যবিষয়ক শিক্ষা দেওয়া।
‎4. একে অপরকে সহযোগিতা করে নিরাপদ ও সুস্থ পরিবেশ গড়ে তোলা।
‎প্রথম দিকে তাদের কাজ নিয়ে অনেকের আগ্রহ থাকলেও, সময়ের সাথে সাথে ব্যস্ততার কারণে অনেকে দল থেকে দূরে সরে গেলেন। কিন্তু রিপন থামলেন না। রিপনের পথচলা মোটেও সহজ ছিল না। অনেকেই তার কাজ নিয়ে বিদ্রূপ করত, কেউ বলত, "এত কষ্ট করে লাভ কী?", আবার কেউ বলত, "এই কাজের দায়িত্ব তো পৌরসভার, তুমি কেন নিজের গায়ে চাপ নিচ্ছ?" কিন্তু রিপন এসব কথাকে পাত্তা দেননি। বরং প্রতিদিন আরও বেশি উদ্যম নিয়ে কাজ শুরু করেছেন। তিনি একাই ড্রেন পরিষ্কার করেছেন, রাস্তায় জমে থাকা ময়লা সরিয়েছেন, এমনকি দুর্গন্ধযুক্ত আবর্জনার স্তুপও নিজের হাতে সরিয়ে ফেলেছেন, যেখানে অনেকেই দাঁড়াতেও চাইত না। তার এই দৃঢ়তা ও ধৈর্য এক সময় মানুষের মন জয় করে নেয়। যারা একসময় সমালোচনা করত, তারাই পরে এসে সাহায্যের হাত বাড়িয়েছে। ছোট ছোট ছেলে-মেয়েরা তার কাজে যোগ দিয়েছে। তারা ময়লার ব্যাগ ধরেছে, ঝাড়ু হাতে রাস্তায় নেমেছে। এভাবেই এক সময় পুরো কমিউনিটি বুঝতে পেরেছে, পরিবর্তন সম্ভব, যদি কেউ সাহস করে প্রথম পদক্ষেপ নেয়। রিপন কেবল পরিচ্ছন্নতা নিয়েই থেমে থাকেননি। তিনি বিভিন্ন NGO ও সামাজিক সংস্থার সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ তৈরি করেছেন, যাতে কমিউনিটির উন্নয়নের জন্য সহায়তা আনা যায়। কোনো NGO যদি শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্যসেবা বা ত্রাণ সামগ্রী দেয়, রিপন নিশ্চিত করেন যে সেগুলো সঠিকভাবে মানুষের হাতে পৌঁছায়। এর পাশাপাশি তিনি আমাদের অর্গানাইজেশন এর সাথে ভালো সম্পর্ক রক্ষা করেছেন। যেকোন পরামর্শ, সহযোগিতা, এবং যোগাযোগ এর ক্ষেত্রেও আমরা তার পাশে থাকার চেষ্টা করেছি। আজ রিপন হরিজন কেবল একজন পরিচ্ছন্নতা কর্মী নন; তিনি হরিজন পল্লীর এক প্রেরণার প্রতীক। তার নিরলস প্রচেষ্টা প্রমাণ করেছে, একজন সাধারণ মানুষও অসাধারণ পরিবর্তন আনতে পারে, যদি তার মনে থাকে দৃঢ় ইচ্ছাশক্তি ও সৎ উদ্দেশ্য। পরিবর্তন শুরু হয় একজন মানুষ থেকে। যদি আপনি সাহস করে এগিয়ে আসেন, ধীরে ধীরে অন্যরাও আপনার পাশে দাঁড়াবে।
