A Social Common Man

Bhikaji Kamble is a studious, outspoken, straightforward, and courageous personality. Until now, I had only seen him daily in Nandwal. On the surface, he seemed very strict and self-centered to me. I had also heard some incorrect things about him from others, but today I got the opportunity to meet him in person.

Initially, I thought that our discussion wouldn't last long because people had told me different things about him, and I had unknowingly formed a prejudice based on those hearsay stories. I assumed that this person might not speak with me properly. But I would like to share that my discussion with him lasted for two whole hours. We both didn’t realize how those two hours passed. We even felt that the time was insufficient, and with a promise to meet again, we concluded our discussion.

I first told him about what we were doing in the village. He responded positively to it. Then I asked him about his concerns regarding his village and his home. To that, he replied in just one sentence, "The growing disregard of reading habits among young people is a matter of deep concern." Today’s youth are more inclined towards mobile phones, TV, recklessness, and addictions. They don’t read the history of great leaders properly, yet they celebrate their anniversaries. He shared many such examples from society.

He feels that the education level of children should improve. Being actively involved in social movements, he is very straightforward. He absolutely cannot tolerate wrongdoing. He raises his voice fearlessly against any injustice. He constantly strives to provide good education to his children. He also guides the children who visit him, but if they do not listen, he stops advising them. He does not waste his energy unnecessarily.

He mentioned that he keeps his distance from people who have a sense of arrogance like, "I am the smartest, I know everything, I did this, I did that." He has a collection of old photographs of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. His house is decorated with photographs of great leaders. His interest in history and the study of great leaders' thoughts is a significant aspect of his personality.

While discussing with him, I realized that he could be a great asset for the work of 'SALT,' and I have no doubt about it. I learned an important lesson from him—"Instead of believing in hearsay, one should experience things firsthand." Throughout our discussion, he focused heavily on the reading culture and clearly articulated the problems arising in society due to its decline.

Observing his straightforwardness, fearless thinking, and concern for the younger generation, there is no doubt that Bhikaji Kamble should truly be recognized as an ideal personality in society. His firmness in thought and action-oriented mindset is something the youth of today can truly learn from.
