The Story of Raziya’s Struggle and Victory Against River Erosion

River erosion has long been a serious problem in Bangladesh, particularly in the riverine areas. It brings not only the destruction of homes and farmlands but also shakes the foundation of people’s stability, security, and dreams for the future. Raziya Khatun is one of the countless individuals who faced this harsh reality.
Raziya was born in a small village on the bank of a river. The surroundings were filled with greenery, and the constant murmur of the flowing river created a peaceful atmosphere. The villagers mostly depended on agriculture and fishing for their livelihoods, and Raziya's family was no exception.
But nature does not always remain calm. Due to heavy rainfall and flash floods from the hills, the river turned violent and began to erode its banks rapidly. One after another, the riverbanks started collapsing. During this time, Raziya and her family lost their home for the first time. They had to take shelter at a relative’s house nearby.
When the situation settled down a bit, they returned to rebuild. With great effort, they constructed a new home and started farming again by renting land. However, their hardship was far from over. Unfortunately, the river’s erosion resumed. For the second time, their house and shelter were swallowed by the river.
This second blow was incredibly hard for Raziya. She saw her children sleeping under the open sky, without food, without a roof over their heads. Many would have given up at this point, but Raziya was not among them. She knew that life meant struggle, and survival required courage and resilience.
The financial condition of the family deteriorated significantly due to the erosion. Her husband could no longer farm, as they had no land left. In such dire circumstances, Raziya tried to support her family by doing small jobs. She started by processing and selling basic grocery items like rice, lentils, chili powder, and turmeric powder in the local market.
In the beginning, her earnings were minimal. But gradually, customers started noticing her dedication. People began trusting her due to her honesty and hard work. Although her husband was not initially supportive and did not see much future in her small business, Raziya did not lose focus. Over time, her consistency and growing success changed his perspective.
Eventually, her husband began helping her by bringing goods from the market. Their income began to increase, and their household became somewhat stable again. But Raziya didn’t stop there.
She started talking to other women in the village, encouraging them to start their own small ventures. Inspired by her, some women began selling rice flour, while others started cultivating vegetables in their home gardens to sell at the market. Following Raziya’s example, many women in the village started walking the path toward self-reliance. A wave of positive change spread throughout the community.

Raziya knew that her own progress was not enough—true development meant moving forward together. So, she began reaching out to the local administration. She raised her voice for the rights of families affected by river erosion, demanding relief, rehabilitation, and alternative livelihoods. Although government support was limited, under Raziya’s leadership, many families received some assistance and saw a glimmer of hope.
Eventually, a local volunteer organization began working in the village. Noticing Raziya’s initiatives, they involved her in their programs. With their support, Raziya received further training and tried to expand her business. At the same time, she began paying attention to the education of children in the village. She believed that without education, lasting development was not possible.
Raziya’s long journey of struggle became not only a story of her own survival but also a beacon of hope for the entire village. She proved that natural disasters could take everything away from us—but with determination, hard work, and courage, we can rebuild.
Today, Raziya Khatun is not just a small entrepreneur. She is a leader—an inspiration to women striving to become self-reliant. Amidst the devastation caused by river erosion, she showed how crisis can be transformed into opportunity.
Her story teaches us that life is not always easy, but with strong willpower, any adversity can be overcome. Raziya’s journey stands as a symbol of hope for thousands of people affected by river erosion.

নদীভাঙনের সাথে রাজিয়ার সংগ্রাম ও জয়ের গল্প
বাংলাদেশের নদীভাঙন একটি দীর্ঘদিনের সমস্যা, যা নদীবিধৌত অঞ্চলের মানুষের জীবনে নানা ধরণের বিপর্যয় ডেকে আনে। এ সমস্যা শুধু বসতভিটা বা ফসলি জমি ধ্বংস করে না, মানুষের জীবনের স্থিতি, নিরাপত্তা ও ভবিষ্যতের স্বপ্নকেও গ্রাস করে। এমনই এক বাস্তবতার মুখোমুখি হয়েছেন রাজিয়া খাতুন। নদীর তীরে ছোট্ট একটি গ্রামে তার জন্ম। চারপাশে সবুজের সমারোহ, নদীর কলকল ধ্বনি—সব মিলিয়ে ছিল এক শান্তিপূর্ণ জীবন। গ্রামের অধিকাংশ মানুষ কৃষিকাজ ও নদীতে মাছ ধরেই জীবিকা নির্বাহ করতেন। রাজিয়ার পরিবারও এর ব্যতিক্রম ছিল না।
কিন্তু এক সময় প্রকৃতি রূপ বদলে ফেলে। প্রবল বর্ষণ ও পাহাড়ি ঢলের কারণে নদীটি রুদ্র রূপ ধারণ করে এবং দ্রুত গতিতে ভাঙন শুরু হয়। নদীর পাড় গুলো একে একে ধসে পড়তে থাকে। রাজিয়া খাতুন ও তার পরিবার প্রথমবার ঘর হারান। তখন তারা পাশের এক আত্মীয়ের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নেন। কিছুদিন পর যখন পরিস্থিতি কিছুটা স্বাভাবিক হয়, তখন তারা নতুন করে ঘর বাঁধেন, জমি ভাড়া নিয়ে কৃষিকাজ শুরু করেন।
কিন্তু দুর্ভাগ্যক্রমে নদীর ভাঙন আবার শুরু হয়। দ্বিতীয়বার তাদের ঘর-বাড়ি ও আশ্রয় সব কিছু নদী গর্ভে বিলীন হয়ে যায়। এই ধাক্কা ছিল রাজিয়ার জীবনের জন্য খুবই কঠিন। তিনি চোখের সামনে দেখলেন তাঁর সন্তানদের খোলা আকাশের নিচে ঘুমাতে হচ্ছে, খাবার নেই, আশ্রয় নেই। এমন সময় অনেকেই হাল ছেড়ে দেয়, কিন্তু রাজিয়া খাতুন তা করেননি। তিনি জানতেন, জীবন সংগ্রামের নাম, আর লড়াই করেই টিকে থাকতে হবে।
নদীভাঙনের কারণে পরিবারটির আর্থিক অবস্থা খুবই খারাপ হয়ে যায়। স্বামী কৃষিকাজ করতে পারতেন না, কারণ জমি ছিল না। এমন সময় রাজিয়া ছোটখাটো কাজের মাধ্যমে সংসার চালানোর চেষ্টা করেন। তিনি স্থানীয় বাজারে চাল, ডাল, মরিচ, হলুদ গুঁড়া করে বিক্রি শুরু করেন। শুরুর দিকে খুবই সামান্য আয় হতো, তবে ধীরে ধীরে গ্রাহক বাড়তে থাকে। তার সততা ও পরিশ্রম দেখে মানুষ তাকে বিশ্বাস করতে শুরু করে।
প্রথম দিকে তার স্বামী এই উদ্যোগকে গুরুত্ব দিতেন না। তিনি মনে করতেন, এসব ছোটখাটো ব্যবসায় কোনো ভবিষ্যৎ নেই। কিন্তু রাজিয়ার একাগ্রতা ও সাফল্য দেখে তিনিও ধীরে ধীরে সহযোগিতা করতে শুরু করেন। এক সময় তার স্বামী নিজেই বাজার থেকে পণ্য এনে রাজিয়াকে সাহায্য করতে শুরু করেন। এতে তাদের আয় বাড়ে এবং সংসার কিছুটা স্থিতিশীল হয়।
এখানেই থেমে থাকেননি রাজিয়া। গ্রামের অন্য নারীদের সঙ্গে তিনি কথা বলেন এবং তাদেরও ছোট ছোট উদ্যোগ নিতে উৎসাহ দেন। কেউ চালের আটা বিক্রি করতে শুরু করে, কেউ বাড়ির আঙিনায় সবজি চাষ করে বাজারে বিক্রি করে। রাজিয়ার দেখানো পথ ধরে গ্রামের আরও অনেক নারী স্বাবলম্বী হওয়ার দিকে এগিয়ে যান। এতে করে পুরো গ্রামের মধ্যে একধরনের ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন দেখা যায়।
রাজিয়া জানতেন, শুধু নিজের উন্নতি করলেই হবে না, বরং সকলকে নিয়ে এগিয়ে যেতে হবে। এজন্য তিনি স্থানীয় প্রশাসনের সঙ্গেও যোগাযোগ করতে থাকেন। নদীভাঙনের ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত পরিবারদের জন্য ত্রাণ, পুনর্বাসন ও বিকল্প জীবিকার ব্যবস্থা করার জন্য দাবিও তোলেন। যদিও সরকারি সহায়তা খুব সীমিত ছিল, তবুও রাজিয়ার নেতৃত্বে অনেক পরিবার কিছুটা হলেও উপকৃত হয়।
এক সময় গ্রামে একটি স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংগঠন কাজ শুরু করে। তারা রাজিয়ার কর্মকাণ্ড দেখে তাকে নিজেদের উদ্যোগে সম্পৃক্ত করে। এই সংগঠনের সহায়তায় রাজিয়া আরও প্রশিক্ষণ গ্রহণ করেন এবং তার ব্যবসাকে আরও বড় পরিসরে নিয়ে যাওয়ার চেষ্টা করেন। এর পাশাপাশি তিনি গ্রামের শিশুদের শিক্ষার দিকেও নজর দেন। কারণ, তিনি বিশ্বাস করতেন, শিক্ষা ছাড়া দীর্ঘস্থায়ী উন্নয়ন সম্ভব নয়।
রাজিয়ার এই দীর্ঘ সংগ্রাম কেবল তার পরিবারের জন্য নয়, বরং পুরো গ্রামবাসীর জন্য এক নতুন দৃষ্টান্ত স্থাপন করে। তিনি প্রমাণ করেছেন যে, প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগ আমাদের সবকিছু কেড়ে নিতে পারে, কিন্তু মনোবল, পরিশ্রম আর সাহস থাকলে আবারও ঘুরে দাঁড়ানো সম্ভব।
আজ রাজিয়া খাতুন শুধু একজন ক্ষুদ্র উদ্যোক্তা নন, তিনি একজন নেত্রী, যিনি নারীদেরকে স্বাবলম্বী হতে অনুপ্রাণিত করেন। নদীভাঙনের মত বিপর্যয়ের মধ্যেও তিনি শিখিয়েছেন কিভাবে সংকটকে সম্ভাবনায় রূপান্তর করা যায়।
এই কাহিনী আমাদের শেখায় যে, জীবন সব সময় সহজ নয়, কিন্তু দৃঢ় সংকল্প থাকলে যেকোনো প্রতিকূলতাকে জয় করা সম্ভব। রাজিয়া খাতুনের গল্প হাজারো নদীভাঙনে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত মানুষের জন্য এক আশার প্রদীপ।

• জীবিকার নিরাপত্তা: রাজিয়া খাতুন নিজ উদ্যোগে চাল, ডাল, হলুদ ও মরিচের গুঁড়ার ক্ষুদ্র ব্যবসা শুরু করে পরিবারে অর্থনৈতিক স্থিতিশীলতা ফিরিয়ে এনেছেন।

• প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগে প্রতিরোধ ও পুনর্গঠন: বারবার নদীভাঙনের শিকার হয়েও রাজিয়া হার মানেননি; তিনি প্রমাণ করেছেন যে সংকটের মধ্যেও সাহস, মনোবল ও ধৈর্যের মাধ্যমে নতুন করে জীবন গঠন সম্ভব।
