The Journey to Pabna: A Memorable Experience at the BRED Knowledge Fair

On a crisp morning, our team set off from Dhaka to Pabna, excited for what lay ahead at the much-anticipated Knowledge Fair, organized by BRED (Bangladesh Rural Economic Development) with the support of the Global Fund for Children. The journey was a medley of anticipation, scenic beauty, and enriching conversations. Knowing that we were about to engage in a SALT event (Stimulate, Appreciate, Learn, Transfer) with organizations dedicated to impactful community work made every kilometer worth it.

Upon arrival, the warm hospitality of the BRED team immediately set the tone for the event. Held in the heart of Pabna, the Knowledge Fair brought together some remarkable organizations, including DHARA, Grow Your Reader, Arshirbad, Mohila Unnayan Samity, and the Alokito Kori team. These groups are deeply embedded in their communities, championing various causes with a shared vision of progress and empowerment.

The event was a melting pot of ideas, showcasing the power of grassroots efforts to bring about sustainable change. The SALT approach stood out most, which fostered a culture of mutual respect and learning. This unique format allowed us not only to share our own experiences but also to listen deeply to the challenges, triumphs, and strategies of others.

The most memorable and impactful part of the knowledge fair was the unique bonding activity involving rope tying. Each participant was connected to one another with a rope, symbolizing the interconnectedness of individuals and the strength of collective effort. As the rope linked every person, it served as a visual and physical reminder of how we are all part of a larger community, reliant on each other's support, knowledge, and collaboration. The activity encouraged participants to engage more deeply, developing trust, teamwork, and a sense of unity that went beyond mere words. It was not just an exercise; it was a powerful metaphor for the bonds that hold us together, making the experience both meaningful and unforgettable.

One of the highlights for me was hearing about the incredible work being done by the Grow Your Reader initiative, which promotes early literacy and a love for books in underserved communities. Their innovative methods of engaging young readers sparked ideas for potential collaborations. Similarly, Arshirbad & Mohila Unnayan Samity inspired us with stories of empowering women through skill development and entrepreneurship—a testament to the resilience of rural women in Bangladesh.

The Alokito Kori team’s focus on education and youth development particularly resonated with me. Their passion for nurturing the next generation of leaders reminded me of the importance of investing in our future, starting with today’s children.

Beyond the sessions, the event also served as a space for meaningful networking and collaboration. Conversations to new ideas and potential partnerships, reinforcing the importance of collective effort in driving change.

As we wrapped up the day, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude to the BRED team for organizing such a well-rounded, impactful event. They created a platform where experiences were shared, ideas were exchanged, and, most importantly, a sense of solidarity was fostered.

This journey to Pabna was more than just a trip; it was a learning expedition that reaffirmed the value of community-driven development and the power of collaboration. Returning to Dhaka, I carried with me not only new insights but also a renewed commitment to contribute to meaningful change in our communities.
