Story telling of Mr. Md. Shahidul Islam, The Executive Director of BRED

I am Md. Shahidul Islam, the Executive Director of BRED, leading the organization in humanitarian and development efforts in Bangladesh with the support of multifaceted donors. However, its foundation faced significant struggles, and its journey has been far from easy. Allow me to share with you the narrative of my evolving role in fostering a humanitarian and developmental mindset.

In the year 1998, a devastating flood struck Bangladesh, affecting various districts including Pabna, which emerged as one of the severely impacted areas in dire need of humanitarian aid while I was sixteen years old. The Bangladesh Government sought support from both international and national communities. During this critical period, I found myself deeply moved as I witnessed the plight of the affected people. They were forced to relocate to higher grounds, makeshift shelters, and improvised platforms constructed from wood and bamboo. However, amidst their struggle for survival, the absence of provisions such as cooking facilities, food, and safe drinking water became glaringly apparent.

Moreover, the threat of river erosion compounded the challenges for those residing close to the riverbanks. Fortunately, my own residence was situated in a comparatively elevated area, shielding it from the worst impacts of the flood. Nonetheless, the suffering endured by the neighboring communities, particularly those inhabiting riverine regions, was unbearable to witness.

Inspired by a sense of duty and fueled by compassion, my childhood friends and I resolved to take action to alleviate the suffering of the affected populace. Despite our limited financial means, our unwavering determination propelled us forward. Through collaborative efforts, we embarked on a mission to secure the necessary funds and resources to aid the community.

Our initial endeavors began with personal contributions, including a contribution from my family's resources, made without their explicit consent. Our foremost priority was the rescue and relocation of families residing on river islands vulnerable to erosion. We hired boats and facilitated the safe transfer of seven to eight families along with their belongings, including livestock, to mainland areas.

Initially met with apprehension from my family regarding my unilateral decision to extend assistance, their eventual acknowledgment of the urgency and gravity of the situation fostered their support and encouragement. Subsequently, our collective efforts gained momentum as we rallied the support of neighboring well-wishers and family members with financial means to bolster our relief activities.

As our rescue efforts intensified, we focused on establishing sustainable resettlement solutions for the affected families in safer locations. Meanwhile, in collaboration with a core group of seven to eight friends, we strategized and coordinated efforts to address the evolving needs of the community.

Thus began my journey into humanitarian work, marked by numerous initiatives aimed at aiding individuals during times of crisis. Reflecting on these experiences fills me with a profound sense of pride and serves as a driving force to establish an organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged and marginalized communities across various spheres.

Although beset by financial constraints, my unwavering determination and ability to mobilize resources, coupled with the support of my family and community, have transformed adversity into success. Through these endeavors, I've come to realize that true humanitarianism transcends monetary considerations; it is rooted in initiative, leadership, and community empowerment, fostering a reciprocal exchange of support and solidarity. Throughout his life, he has consistently offered his time, talents, and very being to the betterment of humanity. He believes that the greatest lessons come from facing adversity, as it forces you to consider all angles in order to help those in need. This commitment to service is both his duty and his lasting impact on the world.
