 Horijan Polli is a densely populated area located in the Middle of Mymensingh city. Located between the two main drains of the city, this village portrays a society surrounded by an ‘invisible wall’. 85% of the people here are involved in the cleaning profession. Both men and women earn their living through this work. However, the life of this community, which has been isolated and neglected from the mainstream of society for a long time, is a shadowy reality. 4-5 people crowded into small houses; one house attached to another — it is like a populated small planet. Since the community is a little low, it seems that whenever the monsoon comes, suffering descends. If there is a little more rain, water accumulates waist-deep in the houses. Furniture is washed away; food and clothes are ruined. However, even though there are huge drains on both sides of the village, that water cannot exit the community. Behind this waterlogging problem was an unspoken truth—the drains around the community were often clogged with garbage. And that garbage was often dumped there by the locals. This cyclical misery seemed to be going on forever. However, the solution was very close—it was only necessary to motivate people to move forward on the path to a solution. In the midst of this misery, the SALT Conversation came as a ray of hope. We talk to the people of the community using the (Stimulate – Appreciate – Learn – Transfer) method. We want to know the reality of their lives, find out their dreams, their good qualities and possibilities. This method creates respect and humanity for each other, and it is possible to awaken the positive energy within people. During the SALT Conversation, we hear from the people of the community about their suffering, their aspirations and, above all, their desire for change. They say that if we keep our own communities clean, then perhaps this problem can be reduced to some extent. They started taking small initiatives like not throwing garbage in the drain, installing dustbins in specific places, maintaining cleanliness regularly, and regularly maintaining all the places through which water flows out of the community. Leadership emerged from within the community. The most surprising thing is that there was no external leadership for this change, but several groups were formed from within the community. Where there are people from all walks of life in the community. The work of these groups is to regularly observe the community, create awareness, and ensure spontaneous participation in community development activities. Through SALT Conversation, they started to understand that we can do it too. We are not just sanitation workers, we are also part of this society, we also have respect, rights, and dreams. They started thinking about the future of their children, they want their next generation to grow up in a good environment, where there is education, health, and respect. SALT's role is the biggest behind this entire transformation. SALT is not just a strategy—it is a vision, an attitude, a belief that the key to change lies within people. When we ask people: “Do you think you can do something for your community?” people learn to think, find their own worth, and come forward with courage. This story of Harijan Palli is not just the story of a small community. It proves that if people are respected and valued, if their voices are heard and their dreams are given importance—then they themselves become the heroes of their own social change. Today, Harijan Palli is not just a neighborhood of clean workers, it is a symbol of ongoing change—where people are discovering themselves, and SALT is standing by their side as a guide on that path.        ময়মনসিংহ শহরের প্রাণকেন্দ্রে অবস্থিত এক ঘনবসতিপূর্ণ এলাকা — হরিজন পল্লী। শহরের দুইটি প্রধান ড্রেনের মাঝখানে অবস্থিত এই পল্লী যেন এক ‘অদৃশ্য দেয়ালে’ ঘেরা সমাজের চিত্র তুলে ধরে। এখানকার ৮৫% মানুষ পরিচ্ছন্নতা পেশায় যুক্ত। পুরুষ-মহিলা উভয়েই এই কাজের মাধ্যমে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে থাকেন। তবে, দীর্ঘদিন ধরে সমাজের মূলধারা থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন ও অবহেলিত এই কমিউনিটির জীবন যেন এক ছায়া ঢাকা বাস্তবতা। ছোট ছোট ঘরে গাদাগাদি করে থাকা ৪-৫ জন মানুষ, একটির সাথে আরেকটি লাগানো ঘর — এ যেন জনবহুল এক ছোট্ট গ্রহ। কমিউনিটি একটু নিচু হওয়ায় বর্ষা এলেই যেন দুর্ভোগ নেমে আসে। একটু বেশি বৃষ্টি হলেই কোমড় সমান পানি জমে যায় ঘরবাড়িতে। ভেসে যায় আসবাব, নষ্ট হয় খাদ্য ও কাপড়। অথচ, পল্লীর দুইপাশে বিশাল ড্রেন থাকলেও সেই পানি কমিউনিটি থেকে বের হতে পারে না। এই জলাবদ্ধতার সমস্যার পেছনে লুকিয়ে ছিল এক অব্যক্ত সত্য— কমিউনিটির আশেপাশে থাকা ড্রেনগুলো প্রায়ই ময়লা আবর্জনায় বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। এবং সেই ময়লা অনেক সময় স্থানীয়দের দ্বারাই সেখানে ফেলা হয়। এই চক্রাকারে চলা দুর্দশা যেন থামছেই না। অথচ, সমাধানটা খুব কাছেই ছিল— শুধুমাত্র মানুষকে উজ্জীবিত করে সমাধানের পথে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার প্রয়োজন ছিল। এই দুর্দশার মাঝে আশার আলো হয়ে আসে SALT Conversation. (Stimulate – Appreciate – Learn – Transfer) পদ্ধতিতে আমরা কমিউনিটির মানুষের সাথে কথা বলি। তাদের জীবনের বাস্তবতা জানতে চাই, তাদের স্বপ্ন, তাদের ভালো গুণ এবং সম্ভবনার খোঁজ করি। এই পদ্ধতিতে একে অপরের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা ও মানবিকতা তৈরি হয়, এবং মানুষের ভেতরের ইতিবাচক শক্তিকে জাগিয়ে তোলা সম্ভব হয়। SALT Conversation এর সময় আমরা কমিউনিটির মানুষের মুখে শুনি তাদের দুর্ভোগ, তাদের আকাঙ্ক্ষা এবং সর্বোপরি, পরিবর্তনের আগ্রহ। তারা বলেন, যদি নিজেরাই নিজেদের কমিউনিটিকে পরিষ্কার রাখি, তাহলে হয়তো এই সমস্যা কিছুটা হলেও কমানো সম্ভব। ড্রেনে ময়লা না ফেলা, নির্দিষ্ট জায়গায় ডাস্টবিন স্থাপন, নিয়মিত পরিষ্কার-পরিচ্ছন্নতা রক্ষা, এবং যেই সকল জায়গা দিয়ে কমিউনিটি থকে পানি নেমে যায়, তার নিয়মিত দেখাশুনা —এই ছোট ছোট উদ্যোগ নিয়ে তারা নিজেদের উদ্যোগেই এগিয়ে আসতে শুরু করে। কমিউনিটির মধ্য থেকে উঠে আসে নেতৃত্ব। সবচেয়ে আশ্চর্যের বিষয়, এই পরিবর্তনের জন্য কোনো বাইরের নেতৃত্ব নয়, বরং কমিউনিটির ভেতর থেকেই গড়ে ওঠে বেশ কয়েকটি দল। যেখানে রয়েছে কমিউনিটির সর্বস্থরের মানুষ। এই দলগুলোর কাজ হচ্ছে নিয়মিত কমিউনিটি পর্যবেক্ষণ, সচেতনতা তৈরি এবং কমিউনিটির উন্নয়ন মূলক কাজে স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত অংশগ্রহণ নিশ্চিত করা। SALT Conversation এর মাধ্যমে তারা বুঝতে শুরু করে—আমরাও পারি। আমরা শুধু পরিচ্ছন্নতা কর্মী নই, আমরাও এই সমাজের একজন, আমাদেরও সম্মান, অধিকার ও স্বপ্ন রয়েছে। তারা তাদের সন্তানদের ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে চিন্তা করতে শুরু করে, তারা চায় তাদের পরবর্তী প্রজন্ম একটি ভালো পরিবেশে বড় হোক, যেখানে থাকবে শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্য এবং সম্মান। এই পুরো রূপান্তরের পেছনে SALT এর ভূমিকাই সবচেয়ে বড়। SALT শুধুমাত্র একটি কৌশল নয়—এটি একটি দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি, একটি মনোভাব, একটি বিশ্বাস যে মানুষের ভেতরেই রয়েছে তাদের পরিবর্তনের চাবিকাঠি। আমরা যখন মানুষকে প্রশ্ন করি: “আপনি কি মনে করেন আপনি নিজেই আপনার কমিউনিটির জন্য কিছু করতে পারেন?” তখন মানুষ ভাবতে শেখে, নিজের মূল্য খুঁজে পায়, এবং সাহস করে সামনে এগিয়ে আসে। হরিজন পল্লীর এই গল্প কেবল একটি ছোট কমিউনিটির গল্প নয়। এটি প্রমাণ করে, যদি মানুষকে শ্রদ্ধা ও মূল্য দেওয়া যায়, যদি তাদের কথা শোনা যায় এবং তাদের স্বপ্নকে গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়—তাহলে তারা নিজেরাই হয়ে ওঠে নিজেদের সমাজ পরিবর্তনের নায়ক। আজ হরিজন পল্লী শুধু একটি পরিচ্ছন্ন কর্মীদের এলাকা নয়, এটি একটি চলমান পরিবর্তনের প্রতীক—যেখানে মানুষ নিজেকে আবিষ্কার করছে, এবং SALT তাদের সেই পথে পথপ্রদর্শক হয়ে পাশে দাঁড়াচ্ছে।
