In the Pechakola community, members of the Rojonigondha group are discussing ways to implement their ideas with the help of SALT. They want to explore self-sufficiency, particularly focusing on how to fund their own education when families struggle to do so.
During discussions, some members expressed interest in learning tailoring. Also, they noted that children are often absorbed in mobile phones, so they suggested creating play opportunities at home and providing books to engage them via productive activities.
Jhuma Rani Ghosh expressed a desire to teach tailoring but faced resistance from her husband initially, who questioned the value of her effort. This made her anxious, as she had promised to teach others. After a conversation with one of the community members, our facilitator got to know that her husband is reluctant to support her desire to teach tailoring without charge.
After some conversations with our facilitator, Jhuma's husband shared his views on community issues, emphasizing the importance of education, employment for the unemployed, and mutual support within the community. Initially hesitant, he later felt inspired by the discussions and recognized the potential impact of teaching tailoring.
Eventually, the group organized a session where Jhuma began teaching tailoring and invited us to visit which was very inspiring. They documented the process on a whiteboard, sharing details about the initiative and slogans promoting learning and teaching. The enthusiasm of the learners was evident, and they planned to continue teaching free classes to younger children so that they can utilize their free time in productive activities and quality education at primary stage.
This initiative marked a significant change in the community's mindset, promoting awareness and empowerment. The people began recognizing the value of helping one another and were motivated to improve their circumstances collectively. The SALT approach proved effective, as it encouraged members to identify and tackle their challenges together, fostering a supportive and dynamic environment. These tailoring initiatives and activities focused on spending quality time with children reflect SALT's commitment toward community development.
Overall, the community is becoming increasingly proactive and united, inspiring each other to learn and share skills.
