Our experience in the fight against HIV stigma in Segou (Mali)

Fight against stigma and discrimination associated with HIV / AIDS "another battle against HIV / AIDS"

The NGO Walé as reference structure in the fight against HIV / AIDS in the region of Segou is confronted daily with the stigma in the provision of services (observations made within the organization and level of experiences of PLWHA)  Thus, to initiate a process leading to an appropriate response to this situation, Wale was organized in 2007 a day of advocacy directed at leaders of Segou, which she called "Day Light".
It was an opportunity for Wale and its partners, specifically associations of persons living with HIV to build the public about the phenomenon through an inventory and poignant.
The approach was to expose to the public:
- That some HIV positive people can live
- That the officers find Wale (behavior of PV-HIV), arising from the fear that these people have a stigma
- The consequences of bad behavior of PV-HIV, with support in the example of the good old chloroquine, which after so many years of loyal service is declared ineffective in the treatment of malaria. ARVs may suffer the same fate (the same causes produce the same effects)

Getting there? With Who?
An appeal was launched at the individual and collective leadership of all.

The second edition of day light (2009) was in line with a project called "positive project." The project's goal is POSITIVE to contribute to the reduction of stigma and discrimination associated with HIV infection in the towns of Segou, Sébougou, Macina Pélengana and by promoting a good understanding of the HIV-PV populations.

Indeed, the positive project is a process that the NGO Walé urged to implement strategies to fight against the stigma associated with HIV. He is experimenting with strategies to measure their effectiveness, their weaknesses and innovations etc.

The main project activities POSITIVE are:

-Capacity building of community leaders and authorities to be more responsive / sensitive to cases of stigmatization of PLWHA in the community. They will be more conducive to taking steps in the direction of reducing the stigmatization of PLWHA. For example, the "day light"

-Capacity building of PLWHA to enhance their self esteem and assertiveness, the project gives them more power to express themselves, to flourish. (For example, training on HIV-related stigma, support groups, psychological etc.).

-The capacity of family members, women's groups, services to become aware of the stigma. (Examples: training, entertainment, support for income generating activities, culinary activities that is to say, eating with a PHA)

Families, associations, women's services have accepted the services of 10 PLWHA trained and prepared by Wale. These sites (families, women's associations, services) share with PLWHA gradually following activities:

 Talk discussion on stigma
 Talk about HIV / AIDS
 Eating together with a PHA, having tea together with a PHA, drinking from the same bowl so that PLWHA.
 Implementation of the AGR
 Evidence Discovery Face

The trade-periodic gathering the various project stakeholders to explore opportunities, analyze and overcome barriers to change.

NB: we seek a note to support us in the fight against HIV stigma

While there is stigma and discrimination associated with HIV, we're not back to square one in the response to HIV / AIDS even with HIV prevention, care of PLWHA?
