Learning from Stories of Change: Reflections from the BRED Knowledge Fair

On October 25, I had the opportunity to attend a Knowledge Fair organized by Bangladesh Rural Economic Development (BRED). It was an inspiring day filled with stories of transformation, hope, and collective action. Listening to the community groups share their journeys reminded me how deeply change begins from within — when people come together around a shared dream.

Different community teams showcased how they are creating positive change in their own ways. Few of them were:

• Team “Cholo Egiye Jai” is ensuring safety and awareness near the river by setting up signboards and instructions for everyone.
• Team “Joba” is leading the way in creating “Nutrition Families” through organic fertilizer production.
• Team “Tiya” is empowering women by teaching tailoring skills.
• Team “Jamuna” is addressing waterlogging and teaching swimming to build resilience against climate challenges.

Each team’s story reflected deep community ownership and pride - the true essence of sustainable development. I could feel the love and bonding they have for each other. Seeing the teams celebrating and appreciating each other is a lesson for me on how we can share and celebrate other’s achievements.

One of the most touching moments was listening to Monira apa and Afsana apa from Gopalganj, shared how SALT conversations have transformed their communities. Their stories of listening to each other, discovering strengths, and taking collective action reminded me of the power of ownership. 

But the highlight of the event for me was seeing Salim bhai, the coordinator of Pahariapara Agamir School, Mymensingh, share the story of our school. He spoke about how the community was inspired through SALT conversations to dream of a school and how that dream turned into reality. The land came from the community members to build a school for their children and to preserve their heritage of mud houses. The audience was visibly moved and amazed by this powerful example of community-driven change.

Hearing our school’s story told in such a meaningful space filled me with pride and gratitude. Many participants, including Shohidul bhai, the founder of BRED, expressed a strong interest in visiting our school to witness firsthand how the SALT approach has empowered our community.

As I reflect on the experience, I realize that this Knowledge Fair was not just about learning from others - it was also about connecting stories of change. I would love to share one story of change that has been shared by Salim bhai in our team’s AER session. He said, “The story of Parvez vai from Alokito Kori has really inspired me to practice healthy masculinity. After coming back home, I have been appreciating my wife’s work at home and celebrating her contribution for the last few days. She is loving this appreciation and recognition of her work. I am also helping her with her work since I now realize the amount of work she does, and there is no shame in helping her with household work. I would like to thank the BRED for organizing such an event and creating an opportunity to listen to this story that opened my eyes. I also see a high potential scope of working with Healthy Masculinity in our community since I see such behavior of underestimating women's work and contribution. Seeing and appreciating her efforts has made my wife even more caring toward me. I am really excited to see the impact of this in our community.” 

I left the fair that evening with a heart full of ideas. The stories I heard weren’t just inspiring - they were lessons waiting to be practiced. I began thinking about how our Mymensingh team could learn from them. Hopefully, we will be able to take the learnings into the Pahariapara community and the changes of their community will inspire us to drive ours.

২৫ অক্টোবর আমি বাংলাদেশ রুরাল ইকোনমিক ডেভেলপমেন্ট (BRED) আয়োজিত একটি নলেজ ফেয়ারে অংশ নেওয়ার সুযোগ পাই। পুরো দিনটা ছিল অনুপ্রেরণায় ভরপুর - পরিবর্তনের গল্প, আশার বার্তা আর একসাথে কাজ করার শক্তিতে ভরা। বিভিন্ন কমিউনিটি দলের গল্প শুনতে শুনতে মনে হলো, আসল পরিবর্তনটা শুরু হয় ভেতর থেকে - যখন মানুষ একসাথে স্বপ্ন দেখে এবং সেই স্বপ্ন পূরণে একসাথে কাজ করে।

বিভিন্ন দল তাদের কাজ ও অভিজ্ঞতা শেয়ার করেছিল। যেমনঃ “চলো এগিয়ে যাই” দল নদীর পাশে নিরাপত্তা বাড়াতে সাইনবোর্ড আর নির্দেশনা বসাচ্ছে। “জবা” দল জৈব সার তৈরি করে “পুষ্টি পরিবার” গড়ে তুলছে।
“টিয়া” দল নারীদের সেলাই শেখানোর মাধ্যমে তাদের স্বাবলম্বী করছে।
আর “যমুনা” দল জলাবদ্ধতা সমস্যা মোকাবিলা ও সাঁতার শেখানোর মাধ্যমে মানুষকে জলবায়ু চ্যালেঞ্জের সঙ্গে মানিয়ে নিতে সাহায্য করছে।

প্রতিটি দলের গল্পেই ছিল কমিউনিটির প্রতি ভালোবাসা, দায়িত্ববোধ আর গর্ব। তাদের পারস্পরিক বন্ধন ও একে অপরের কাজের প্রতি সম্মান দেখে সত্যিই ভালো লেগেছে। ওদের মতো আমরাও যদি একে অপরের অর্জনকে উদযাপন করতে পারি, তাহলে আমাদের সম্পর্ক আরও শক্তিশালী হবে।

সবচেয়ে ছুঁয়ে যাওয়া মুহূর্ত ছিল গোপালগঞ্জের মনিরা আপা আর আফসানা আপার গল্প শোনা। তারা বলছিলেন, কীভাবে SALT আলাপচারিতা তাদের কমিউনিটিতে পরিবর্তন এনেছে। একে অপরের কথা মনোযোগ দিয়ে শোনা, নিজেদের শক্তি খুঁজে বের করা, আর একসাথে কাজ করা - এই জিনিসগুলোই তাদের জীবনে সত্যিকারের মালিকানার বোধ এনে দিয়েছে।

আমার জন্য সবচেয়ে গর্বের মুহূর্ত ছিল যখন ময়মনসিংহের পাহাড়িয়াপাড়া আগামীর স্কুলের সমন্বয়কারী সেলিম ভাই আমাদের স্কুলের গল্প শেয়ার করলেন। তিনি বললেন, কীভাবে SALT কনভার্সেশন মানুষকে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছে একটি স্কুলের স্বপ্ন দেখতে, আর সেই স্বপ্ন এখন বাস্তব। আমাদের স্কুলের জন্য জমি দিয়েছেন গ্রামের মানুষ নিজেরাই তাদের সন্তানদের জন্য, আর তাদের কাদা ঘরের ঐতিহ্য টিকিয়ে রাখার জন্য। পুরো অডিটোরিয়াম যেন নিস্তব্ধ হয়ে গিয়েছিল, সবাই মুগ্ধ হয়ে শুনছিল।

আমাদের স্কুলের গল্প এভাবে শুনে আমার বুকটা ভরে গিয়েছিল গর্ব আর কৃতজ্ঞতায়। অনেকেই, বিশেষ করে BRED-এর প্রতিষ্ঠাতা শহিদুল ভাই, বলেছেন তারা একদিন পাহাড়িয়াপাড়া এসে আমাদের স্কুল দেখতে চান—কীভাবে SALT পদ্ধতির মাধ্যমে কমিউনিটি নিজেরাই পরিবর্তন এনেছে, তা কাছ থেকে অনুভব করতে।

এই ফেয়ার আমার কাছে শুধু শেখার একটা জায়গা ছিল না—এটা ছিল গল্পে গল্পে সংযোগের একটা সুন্দর অভিজ্ঞতা। আমাদের টিমের AER সেশনে সালিম ভাই একটা বিশেষ গল্প শেয়ার করেছিলেন, সেটা এখানেও বলতে চাই। তিনি বলেছিলেন—

“আলোকিত করি’র পারভেজ ভাইয়ের গল্পটা আমাকে ভীষণ ছুঁয়ে গেছে। তার ‘হেলদি ম্যাসকিউলিনিটি’ এর  গল্প থেকে পরিবারের কাজকে সম্মান করা, ভাগাভাগি করার গুরুত্ব বুঝতে পেরেছি। তার অনুপ্রেরণায় আমি এখন প্রতিদিন আমার স্ত্রীর কাজের প্রশংসা করি, ওর অবদানের মূল্য দিই। ও খুশি হয়েছে, আমাদের সম্পর্ক আরও মধুর হয়েছে। আগে ভাবতাম ঘরের কাজ করা পুরুষদের কাজ নয়, এখন বুঝি—এটা আসলে ভালোবাসা আর সম্মানের প্রকাশ। আমি চাই আমাদের কমিউনিটিতেও এই মানসিকতা ছড়িয়ে দিতে। ধন্যবাদ BRED-কে, এমন একটা মঞ্চ দেওয়ার জন্য যেখানে আমরা একে অপরের গল্প শুনে বদলাতে পারি।”

সেদিন বিকেলে মেলা থেকে ফিরছিলাম একগাদা ভাবনা আর প্রশ্ন নিয়ে। যে গল্পগুলো শুনেছি, সেগুলো শুধু অনুপ্রেরণামূলক নয়—এগুলো আমাদের জীবনে বাস্তবায়ন করার মতো শিক্ষা। এখন ভাবছি, কীভাবে আমাদের ময়মনসিংহ টিম এই শেখাগুলো নিজের কাজের মধ্যে প্রয়োগ করতে পারে। আশা করি, পাহাড়িয়াপাড়ার কমিউনিটিতেও আমরা এই পরিবর্তনের গল্পগুলো থেকে শিখে নিজেদের পথ তৈরি করতে পারব, আর একদিন আমাদের গল্পও অন্যদের অনুপ্রেরণা হয়ে উঠবে।
