খুলনার টুটপাড়ায় ২০০১ সালে, এক ছোট্ট বাড়ির দুটি ঘর থেকে যাত্রা শুরু করে ‘ইডসেপ। ঐ ছোট্ট ঘরদুটিতে ২০০১ সালে শুরু হয়েছিল এক নিঃশব্দ বিপ্লব। এই বিপ্লব কোনো স্লোগান বা মিছিলের ছিল না, ছিল না কোনো প্রচারের। এটি ছিল ভালোবাসা, যত্ন ও মানবিক দায়িত্ববোধের এক অদম্য পদক্ষেপ। এই বিপ্লবের নায়ক ছিলেন এক শিক্ষক – মাহানুরা রোখসার ইলা, যিনি নিরব অথচ দৃঢ় সংকল্পে স্কুলটি গড়ে তোলেন সমাজের প্রায়শই অবহেলিত প্রতিবন্ধী শিশুদের জন্য । তাঁর বিশ্বাস ছিল—প্রতিটি শিশুরই আছে ভালবাসা পাওয়ার অধিকার, শেখার অধিকার, নিজের পায়ে দাঁড়ানোর অধিকার।

সমাজসেবা অধিদপ্তরের অনুমোদন নিয়ে স্কুলটির যাত্রা শুরু হয়। এই প্রতিষ্ঠার পেছনে ছিলো ইলা ম্যাডামের হৃদয়বিদারক উপলব্ধি, যা গড়ে ওঠে তাঁর পূর্ববর্তী কর্মস্থল হামিদিয়া স্কুলে কাজ করার সময়। সেখানে তিনি দেখেন, সুস্থ-স্বাভাবিক শিশুদের প্রতি শিক্ষক-সমাজের আগ্রহ, যত্ন, ভালোবাসা এবং সুযোগের অভাব নেই। তারা খেলাধুলা, সাংস্কৃতিক কার্যক্রম, পুরস্কার – সবকিছুর মধ্যেই থাকে।
আর কিছু প্রতিবন্ধী শিশুরা? তারা চুপচাপ বসে থাকে এক কোণে, কেউ খেয়ালও রাখে না তাদের।

এই অবহেলা গভীরভাবে নাাড়া দেয় ইলা ম্যাডামের হৃদয়কে। তিনি ভাবেন, এরা তো মানুষ, এদেরও অনুভূতি আছে, কিন্তু তারা তা প্রকাশ করতে পারে না। তাই কি তারা অবহেলার যোগ্য? তিনি প্রতিজ্ঞা করেন, এই শিশুদের জন্য কিছু করতে হবে। এই প্রতিজ্ঞা থেকেই জন্ম নেয় ইডসেপ। শুধুমাত্র ব্যক্তিগত অর্থায়নে, পরিবার ও সমাজের বাধা উপেক্ষা করে, মাত্র ৩ জন শিক্ষক ও ৫ জন শিক্ষার্থী নিয়ে শুরু করেন স্কুলটি। যেহেতু তার আর্থিক সংকট ছিলো, বাচ্চাদের জন্য শিক্ষার প্রয়োজনীয় উপকরণ সরবরাহ করতে ভোগান্তি পোহাতে
হয়েছিলো তাকে। হামিদিয়া স্কুলের পরিত্যক্ত বোর্ড এনে নিজেরাই রং করে বানিয়ে নিয়েছিলেন চকচকে বোর্ড। বিভিন্ন জায়গা থেকে সংগ্রহ করেছেন শিক্ষার উপকরণ। অর্থের অভাবে শিক্ষকদের বেতনও সব সময় দিতে পারতেন না। কিন্তু তবুও থামেননি। কারণ তাঁর স্বপ্নটা ছিলো স্পষ্ট – প্রতিবন্ধী শিশুরাও শিক্ষা ও মর্যাদার যোগ্য।

পরিবার থেকে শুরু করে আত্মীয়স্বজন পর্যন্ত কেউই সমর্থন করেননি। বরং তাঁকে নিরুৎসাহিত করে বলেছিলেন, তুমি তো পাগলের শিক্ষিকা! এমনকি তাঁর মামারা যাঁরা রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে চাকরির ব্যবস্থা করেছিলেন, তারা দীর্ঘদিন যোগাযোগ বন্ধ রেখেছিলেন। কিন্তু ইলা ম্যাডাম এই কটুক্তিগুলোকে নিজের শক্তি বানিয়ে নেন। মনে মনে বলেন, একদিন দেখিয়ে দেবো, পাগলেরাও পারে!

তার সেই দৃঢ় সংকল্পের ফল আজ চোখের সামনে। ২০০১ সাল থেকে ২০২৫ পর্যন্ত দীর্ঘ ২৫ বছরে ইডসেপের পাঠ সম্পন্ন করে ৩০ জন প্রতিবন্ধী শিশু সমাজে নিজ পায়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে। স্কুলের প্রথম ৫ জন শিক্ষার্থীর মধ্যে আশরাফুল আজ শিক্ষা শেষে মুদির দোকান দিয়ে স্বাবলম্বী হয়েছেন, রেহানা নিজ বাড়িতে দর্জির কাজ করেন, আর একজন একটি এনজিওতে সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মকান্ডের সাথে জড়িত আছেন, আবার কেউ সফল পশু খামার চালাচ্ছে। এই দীর্ঘ যাত্রায় ইলা ম্যাডামের পাশে ছিলেন দুই নিবেদিতপ্রাণ শিক্ষক – বনানী ভট্টাচার্য ও রতন
বিশ্বাস। তাদের সহানুভূতি, ধৈর্য ও নিষ্ঠা ছাড়া এই স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়ন অসম্ভব হতো। কিন্তু সবচেয়ে বড় ভূমিকা ছিল ইলা ম্যাডামের। গত ২৫ বছর ধরে তিনি নিজের অর্থেই চালিয়ে গেছেন স্কুলের যাবতীয় ব্যয়। কখনও কারও কাছে হাত পাতেননি। সামাজিক নানান বাঁধার স্বীকার হয়েছেন তিনি। তবুও পিছপা হননি। এই স্কুলই তার পরিবার, তার সংসার। এর শিক্ষার্থীরা তার নিজ সন্তান। আজ ২০২৫ সালে স্কুলটিতে ২২ জন প্রতিবন্ধী শিক্ষার্থী রয়েছে। স্কুলের ভবনটি জরাজীর্ণ, ছাদ দিয়ে পানি পড়ে, নেই কোনো খেলার মাঠ, থেরাপি সেন্টার বা মেডিকেল সেবা। কিন্তু এই প্রতিকূলতার মাঝেও বাচ্চারা হাসে, খেলে, শেখে।

আমাদের ব্রেড পরিবার এর একজন সদস্যের প্রতিবন্ধী স্বজন এই স্কুলের শিক্ষার্থী। সেই মাধ্যমেই উনার সঙ্গে ব্রেডের পরিচয় এবং এই স্কুলে ব্রেডের প্রায়শই যাত্রা। ইলা মেমের সাথে সল্ট প্রকল্পের থীম ধরে তার গর্বের কারণ জানতে চাইলে, উনি জানান তার মামাদের দেয়া ভালো চাকুরী উপেক্ষা করে এই প্রতিবন্ধী বাচ্চাদের নিয়ে যখন তিনি সফল হতে পেরেছেন এটাই তার সবচেয়ে বড় গর্বের বিষয়। তিনিঐ চাকুরির সুযোগ ছেড়ে ভুল সিদ্ধান্ত নেন নি।
তিনি তার প্রতিবন্ধী বাচ্চাদের মানবিকতা, সহযোগিতা, সহমর্মিতা, নিয়মানুবর্তিতা ও শৃঙ্খলার সাথে বড় করেছেন।

তিনি একটি সুন্দর গল্প শেয়ার করেন আমাদের সাথে এই বাচ্চাদের ব্যাপারে। ইলা মেম তার স্কুলের অসহায় বাচ্চাদের মধ্যে তার সাধ্যমতো ইদ পোশাক উপহার দিতেন। এক ইদে ৫-৭ টি বাচ্চাদের জন্য ইদ পোশাক কিনে আনেন। কাউকে পেন্ট তো কাউকে শার্টি দিচ্ছিলেন তিনি। হঠাৎ দেখলেন তার ২ শিক্ষার্থী ইমরান ও রায়হান একে অপরের সাথে চমৎকার একটি বিষয়ে কথা বলছিলেন। ইমরান তার বাবার কাছ থেকে নতুন শার্ট- প্যান্ট উপহার পায়। তাই সে রায়ানকে বলে সে যেনো তার ভাগের প্যান্ট নিয়ে যায়। কারণ রায়ান স্কুল থেকে শার্ট গিফট পেয়েছিলো। এতে করে রায়ানেরও একসেট নতুন জামা হবে ইদে। এই যে ভাবনা তাদের মনে সৃষ্টি করতে পেরেছেন, এটাই ইলা মেম এর সফলতা। তিনি এটি নিয়ে ভীষণ গর্বিত।

বর্তমানে স্কুলটির অবস্থা জরাজীর্ণ। ভাঙা চালা দিয়ে পানি পরে। এর মধ্যেই স্কুলের বাচ্চারা পড়ছে, খেলছে। আর ইলা ম্যাডামের স্বপ্ন– একদিন এই স্কুলের জন্য একটি নিজস্ব ভবন হবে, থাকবে খেলার মাঠ, থেরাপি কক্ষ, এবং নানা সুযোগ-সুবিধা।

এরপর আমরা যখন স্কুলের শিক্ষার্থীদের সাথে কথা বলি, তাদের স্বপ্ন জানতে চাই, তারা জানায় কেউ ডাক্তার হবে, কেউ নায়ক হবে, কেউবা আবার ইলা মেম হতে চায়। কী সুন্দর নিখাদ স্বপ্ন তাদের। আমরা অবাক হই। ওরাও সুস্থ স্বাভাবিক বাচ্চাদের মতো স্বপ্ন দেখতে পারে!!

ইডসেপ শুধু পড়াশোনা নয়, উৎসবেও শিশুদের অংশগ্রহণ নিশ্চিত করে। প্রতি বছর স্কুলে পিঠা উৎসব, পহেলা বৈশাখ, বিজয় দিবস, স্বাধীনতা দিবসসহ নানা সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন করা হয়। এইসব অনুষ্ঠানে শিশুরা নিজের মেধা প্রকাশের সুযোগ পায়।

ব্রেড টিম গ্লোবাল ফান্ড ফর চিলড্রেন এর অর্থায়নে গত ১৬-০৭-২০২৫ তারিখে ইডসেপ প্রতিবন্ধী স্কুলের বিশেষ চাহিদাসম্পন্ন শিশুদের মাঝে শিক্ষা ছাতা, ব্যাগ ও শিক্ষা উপকরণ বিতরণ করেছিল। সেই দিন বাচ্চাদের হাসি, আনন্দ আর কৃতজ্ঞতায় ভরে উঠেছিল পুরো স্কুল। সমাজ যাদের অযোগ্যভাবতে চায়, তারা বারবার প্রমাণ করেছে যে তারাও অনুভব করে, ভালোবাসে এবং কৃতজ্ঞ হতে জানে।

In a quiet corner of Tootpara, Main Road, Khulna, a silent revolution began in 2001—not with slogans or rallies, but with deep compassion, unshakable determination, and unwavering belief in the dignity of every child. This revolution was led by a remarkable woman named Mahanura Roksar Ila, who founded the Institute for Disabled Children and People’s Education (IDCAPE) to serve children with special needs who were otherwise ignored by society.

Back then, IDCAPE began in just two rooms of a small rented house. With approval from the Department of Social Services, the school started its journey with only five students and three teachers. It was born out of Ila madam’s painful experience while working at Hamidia School, where she witnessed how healthy children were encouraged in every way—through play, competitions, cultural events, and care—while disabled children were left in the corners, unnoticed and unloved.

This injustice deeply disturbed her. “They are human too,” she thought, “They have feelings, even if they cannot always express them.” With this realization, she took a bold step—leaving behind financial security and even a university-level job offer arranged by her uncles at Rajshahi University—to dedicate her life to children with disabilities.

Facing opposition from her family and relatives, who even mocked her saying, “You’re a teacher for mad children,” Ila remained undeterred. She turned those insults into motivation, quietly saying to herself, “One day I will prove that even these so-called ‘mad’ children can succeed.”

That belief has stood strong for 25 years. Despite financial hardship, she never begged or compromised. She used her own savings to fund the school, often unable to pay her teachers properly. Yet, she found a way—using discarded blackboards from her former school, collecting educational materials from wherever possible, and leaning on her two dedicated colleagues, Banani Bhattacharya and Ratan Biswas, who stood by her throughout the journey.

Today, IDCAPE has transformed the lives of many. Thirty children have already graduated from the school and are standing on their own feet—Ashraful now runs a grocery shop, Rehena works as a tailor, another is active in cultural programs through an NGO, and one student successfully manages a livestock farm.

Currently, IDCAPE has 22 children. The school building is in poor condition, the roof leaks during rain, there’s no playground, no therapy center, and no medical support. Yet, the children laugh, learn, and dream.

One heartwarming moment shared by Ila madam shows the depth of empathy she has cultivated in these children. During one Eid, she bought clothes for a few students. One child, Imran, had already received a shirt and pants from his father. When he noticed his friend Rayhan only received a shirt from school, Imran said, “Take my pants, so you also have a full set of new clothes.” Such values of sharing, empathy, and kindness reflect the true success of IDCAPE.

Ila proudly says, “My biggest pride is choosing these children over a prestigious job. I don’t regret it. These children are my family.” When asked what she dreams for now, she says, “A permanent building, a field to play, a therapy room—nothing more.”

In July 2025, BRED, under the Global Fund for Children (GFC) support, provided school supplies, bags, and umbrellas to IDCAPE’s students. The joy and gratitude on the children’s faces filled the air with warmth and hope. It was a moment that reminded everyone that even those the world often overlooks are full of love, appreciation, and dreams.

When the students were asked about their future, they responded with wide-eyed dreams—some want to be doctors, others heroes, and one even said, “I want to be like Ila madam.” What a beautiful testament to her impact.

IDCAPE is more than a school—it is a living example of what one person’s vision, fueled by love and courage, can achieve. It’s a home of humanity, dignity, and hope. And Mahanura Roksar Ila—the once-called "mad teacher"—is now the proud architect of a revolution that speaks not through noise, but through the smiles of children.
