Honouring Commitment to Women as Standard Bearers of Humanity...The Beijing Declaration needs implementation now

The time has arrived for Women to be treated with Value and Respect by their male Partners...For too long Women were made to endure slavery, debauchery, exploitation and oppression by the Men in their lives who continue to beat, maim and kill them with impunity and without remorse...As Commissioner on the Women and Gender Equality Commission it is imperative that I remain vigilant to the fact that the Beijing Declaration that is fifteen years old has not had the momentum it should have given the fact that 189 countires committed to ensure women's right to equal pay for equal work...Women work tirelessly for minimal wages and their work in the Home remains a "Labour of Love"...Let us seize this moment to 'walk the talk' on women's rights...Let the theme really mean what it says,"Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities:Progress for All"...No Society can expect to be economically viable if women are not allowed to participate fully without Fear or threats to her person...She must be allowed to develop her full potential as she is the one that reproduces the members of the Society...The role of women as nurturer, Care-giver, friend, mother, Lover and yes as father (63% of households in Guyana are headed by females) cannot be taken for granted...What will happen to Society if ALL Women should stirke from all their duties, whether real or perceived?

I think you are correct in us trying to dig deep into the psyche of Humans to comprehend why they do what they do but for the life of me I still grapple with my own emotional scars as a survivor of child sexual abuse and yes I was promiscuous but now that I have read and studied the psychological effects of childhood sexual abuse I can directly identify with the behaviours that us survivours exhibit from time to time...my abuse started at 4 years old...what kind of mind finds pleasure in a four year old Gaston? How do I UNDERSTAND this MIND? I have pledge my life to protect children from paedophiles...its my mission to have them caught...they destroy children who later grow up to become perpetrators thus continuing the cycle of Child Sexual Abuse...the current case involving Catholic Priests is so egregious and downright shameful to the Vatican...What do you think Gaston? How can Men sworn to protect God's sheep turn and abuse them?

Hi Nicole. I agree with you that Paedophile behaviour is one of the worst things in the world which we cannot approve. I get similar feelings when hearing war crime stories. For me the question is: how did 'these minds get so sick'? We need to understand better where the roots of this behaviour come from. Please notice that 'understanding' is different from 'approving'. But in order to transform this harmful behaviour we have to start with understanding it. In all cases, the roots of this behaviour go well beyond the single individual. We are all shaped and a product of our past and environment.

My sister in law works a lot with abused children in the Netherlands. More than 90% of those grown men who engage in these acts with (their) children have been abused themselves when they were young. I was amazed to hear this. The question is how we can transform these extremely harmful expressions towards children? We clearly have to go beyond the individual, discuss and understand within a wider group or community with the objective to understand (not approve) and find ways together to deal with these issues.

What do you think?

In this World where we should all embrace each other because of our Humanity, one must remember that not all of us (Homo Sapiens Sapiens) behave with higher intellect...It must be noted that there exists "Degenerates" those whose mind has lost all reason and will seek out their sexual pleasure in a child such as Paedophiles...How can grown Men find pleasure in Children? These Minds are sick beyond reason...

Dear Nicole. I can envision the body language you would use when you would speak out this words in the beautiful Guyana. Your sharing is interesting. My first reflection is that nobody's role to the whole should be underestimated. We are all connected and all are human. We all have something to share and learn. Men, women, youth, specific social groups etc. For me the essence is letting all groups live out their full potential. Each group and even each individual has its strengths. The question is whether this potential is revealed.

Nicole, can you share a story where a community (or even a family) took actions so that both men and women started living out their full potential. What can we learn on this practice from your experience?

Regards and take care.
Gaston

P.S. And add a photo so people can see your beautiful rasta's :)

Dear Nicole,

Thanks for sharing this message with all of us. So, what can we concretely do to stimulate gender equality?
Experiences with the Malaria Competence Process in Togo show that not only communities respond more effectively to malaria using their own resources, but on top of that women start to speak in public!

One of the most impressive results arising from the use of the Self Assessment is that women dare to speak in public, in a society where they do not traditionally take on this role.

For Blaise Sedoh, this is a major change, “In our background, women had nearly no right to speak. The man would take all decisions. But when, during a Self Assessment, a woman understands the risks malaria means for her child, she enters into dialogue with her husband, “Even if you do not care about me, care about your child”. And the husband starts doing what must be done ...”

You will find more about the results in terms of gender equality here.
