Few months ago, I embarked on a journey to my Dadubari, my grandparent's home, a place filled with cherished memories of winter pitha and summer fruits. This time, however, my visit took on a different purpose. I set out to explore the economic and social landscape of the six communities surrounding my grandparent's abode. Little did I know, my perception of these communities would undergo a significant transformation.
Previously, my notion was that all the people in these communities belonged to a middle-income bracket. However, my eyes were opened to the reality during this visit, as I delved into the intricacies of their lives. I had the opportunity to visit the schools where my uncles, aunts, and now my cousins are studying. This time, it wasn't about enjoying seasonal delights, but rather about understanding the vulnerabilities that lay beneath the surface.
As I interacted with the community members, it became evident that the women, in particular, felt a sense of powerlessness when it came to decision-making. This realization sparked a desire within me to initiate a community development project aimed at transforming their lives, focusing primarily on the school ecosystem.
The warmth and dedication exhibited by the teachers and the school management committee left me overwhelmed and amazed. Their commitment to making a positive impact on their students' lives was palpable. What struck me the most was hearing the teachers acknowledge the existing problems and expressing a genuine eagerness to address them.
It was truly inspiring to witness educators taking ownership of the learning gaps among their students. They recognized that without bridging these gaps, the students would lose interest and eventually drop out. This was a pivotal moment – the first time in my life that I witnessed teachers not just identifying issues but actively seeking ways to bring about positive change.
The teachers and school management committee are the unsung heroes of these communities. They understand that education is the key to breaking the cycle of vulnerability. Their dedication to reducing learning gaps is not only commendable but also crucial for the overall development of the community.
This visit has left an indelible mark on my perspective, transforming it from a mere observer to an advocate for change. As we embark on the community development project, I am filled with hope and determination to empower these communities, one student at a time. Together, we can build a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive and no woman feels powerless in the face of decisions that shape her life.

Thank you so much Santi didi for your very kind words!
Beautifully written by Sadia Apu. I am enriched by reading your writings.
You were open to listening to them and learning from their experience!
Teachers themselves were sharing the existing problems they are facing in their classrooms. That changed my perspective.
What brought a change in your perspective?
Thank you so much Rituu.
Whenever I visit schools, I often observe that teachers are very reluctant to share the problems that exist within their schools. However, this recent visit and conversation have changed my perspective. They are very much aware of the real and core problems.
What do you think changed you perspective? I love your blogs!
