Changes from the Story

A few days ago, a second group SALT session was held with the Shapla group of parents in the Char Nakalia community. At the beginning, everyone got to know each other through an ice break. The parents were divided into groups and discussed among themselves. Then the parents themselves shared their current status, experiences and worries about the education of their children.

After their own discussion, they shared that earlier many did not keep track of whether their children were going to school regularly. Due to their busy schedules, it was not possible for many to give time to study at home. As a result, the education of many children was gradually falling behind.

I was listening to them attentively. At one stage, Momena Apa shared her experience of participating in the Char Nakalia Knowledge Fair with everyone. She said that there she learned about various initiatives of the Pechakola community. Especially the initiative of the Jawa team to stand by the elderly and teach the elderly to write by hand, and the initiative of the Krishnachura team to support free education for children inspired her a lot.  She said, if another community can take such an initiative with its own strength, then they can also do something for their children.

Momena Apa's realization encouraged other parents to think in a new way. Then they were asked a few simple questions. For example, what can you do yourself for the education of your children? What are the strengths of the family and community? What kind of initiatives can be taken for children?

First, everyone thought for a while. Then they made a few decisions on their own. They decided to keep track of whether their children were going to school regularly, help them with their studies at home as much as possible, set aside some time for their children every day, and discuss their children's education with each other regularly.

When they sat down with them again after a few days, they said that they had started working according to their own decisions. Some were regularly checking on their children's studies, some were helping them study at home, and some were sharing their experiences with other parents about their children's education.

This change may seem small, but its importance is very big. Because this change began by thinking about their own reality, listening to each other's experiences, and being inspired by the positive initiatives of another community.

The biggest lesson I learned from this group SALT is that it is much more effective to create opportunities for people to think about their own experiences, strengths, and potential than to tell them solutions. I saw that Momena Apa herself started thinking in a new way after hearing the story of the change in the Pechakola community. Then that idea spread to other parents as well. Without any guidance, they themselves decided on what to do for the children's education and started implementing it.

This experience showed that the positive experiences of one community can be a powerful source of learning for another community. When people find a match between their own reality and the good initiatives of others, they can find a way to change themselves. I am interested in using the positive stories of other communities as learning materials more when conducting group SALT in the future.

শিরোনাম: গল্প থেকে পরিবর্তন

কিছুদিন আগে চর নাকালিয়া কমিউনিটিতে অভিভাবকদের শাপলা দলের সঙ্গে দ্বিতীয়বার একটি গ্রুপ সল্ট সেশন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। শুরুতে একটি আইস ব্রেকের মাধ্যমে সবাই পরিচিত হন। অভিভাবকদের কয়েকটি দলে ভাগ করে নিজেদের মধ্যে আলোচনা করেছিল। এরপর অভিভাবকরা নিজেরাই শিশুদের শিক্ষা নিয়ে তাদের বর্তমান অবস্থা, অভিজ্ঞতা ও দুশ্চিন্তার কথা শেয়ার করেছিল।

তাদের নিজেদের আলোচনায় পর শেয়ার করেন, আগে অনেকেই সন্তানরা নিয়মিত স্কুলে যাচ্ছে কি না, তা খোঁজ রাখতেন না। ব্যস্ততার কারণে বাড়িতে পড়াশোনার জন্য সময় দেওয়াও অনেকের পক্ষে সম্ভব হতো না। ফলে অনেক শিশুর পড়াশোনা ধীরে ধীরে পিছিয়ে যাচ্ছিল।

আমি তাদের কথা মনোযোগ দিয়ে শুনছিলাম। একপর্যায়ে মোমেনা আপা চর নাকালিয়া নলেজ ফেয়ারে অংশ নেওয়ার অভিজ্ঞতা সবার সঙ্গে ভাগ করে নেন। তিনি বলেন, সেখানে তিনি পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির বিভিন্ন উদ্যোগ সম্পর্কে জেনেছেন। বিশেষ করে জবা টিমের বয়স্ক মানুষদের পাশে দাঁড়ানো এবং বয়স্কদের হাতে-কলমে লেখা শেখানোর উদ্যোগ, আর কৃষ্ণচূড়া টিমের শিশুদের জন্য বিনামূল্যে পড়াশোনার সহযোগিতার উদ্যোগ তাকে অনেক অনুপ্রাণিত করেছে। তিনি বলেন, যদি অন্য একটি কমিউনিটি নিজেদের শক্তি দিয়ে এমন উদ্যোগ নিতে পারে, তাহলে তারাও নিজেদের শিশুদের জন্য কিছু করতে পারবেন।

মোমেনা আপার এই উপলব্ধি অন্য অভিভাবকদেরও নতুনভাবে ভাবতে উৎসাহিত করে। এরপর তাদের কয়েকটি সহজ প্রশ্ন করা হয়। যেমন, শিশুদের শিক্ষার জন্য আপনারা নিজেরা কী করতে পারেন? পরিবার ও কমিউনিটির কী কী শক্তি রয়েছে? শিশুদের জন্য কী ধরনের উদ্যোগ নেওয়া সম্ভব?

প্রথমে সবাই কিছুক্ষণ চিন্তা করেন। পরে তারা নিজেরাই কয়েকটি সিদ্ধান্ত নেন। তারা ঠিক করেন, সন্তানরা নিয়মিত স্কুলে যাচ্ছে কি না তা খোঁজ রাখবেন, বাড়িতে যতটা সম্ভব পড়াশোনায় সাহায্য করবেন, প্রতিদিন কিছু সময় সন্তানদের জন্য রাখবেন এবং শিশুদের শিক্ষা নিয়ে একে অপরের সঙ্গে নিয়মিত আলোচনা করবেন।

কিছুদিন পর আবার তাদের সঙ্গে বসলে তারা জানান, তারা নিজেদের সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী কাজ শুরু করেছেন। কেউ নিয়মিত সন্তানের পড়াশোনার খোঁজ নিচ্ছেন, কেউ বাড়িতে বসে পড়তে সাহায্য করছেন, আবার কেউ অন্য অভিভাবকদের সঙ্গে শিশুদের শিক্ষা নিয়ে অভিজ্ঞতা ভাগ করে নিচ্ছেন।

এই পরিবর্তন হয়তো ছোট মনে হতে পারে, কিন্তু এর গুরুত্ব অনেক বড়। কারণ এই পরিবর্তনের শুরু হয়েছিল নিজেদের বাস্তবতা নিয়ে ভাবা, একে অপরের অভিজ্ঞতা শোনা এবং অন্য একটি কমিউনিটির ইতিবাচক উদ্যোগ থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হওয়ার মাধ্যমে।

এই গ্রুপ সল্ট থেকে আমার সবচেয়ে বড় শেখা হলো, মানুষকে সমাধান বলে দেওয়ার চেয়ে তাদের নিজেদের অভিজ্ঞতা, শক্তি ও সম্ভাবনা নিয়ে ভাবার সুযোগ তৈরি করা অনেক বেশি কার্যকর। আমি দেখেছি, পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির পরিবর্তনের গল্প শুনে মোমেনা আপা নিজেই নতুনভাবে ভাবতে শুরু করেন। এরপর সেই ভাবনা অন্য অভিভাবকদের মাঝেও ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। কোনো নির্দেশনা ছাড়াই তারা নিজেরাই শিশুদের শিক্ষার জন্য করণীয় ঠিক করেন এবং তা বাস্তবায়নও শুরু করেন।

এই অভিজ্ঞতা বুঝিয়েছে, একটি কমিউনিটির ইতিবাচক অভিজ্ঞতা অন্য একটি কমিউনিটির জন্য শক্তিশালী শেখার উৎস হতে পারে। মানুষ যখন অন্যদের ভালো উদ্যোগের সঙ্গে নিজেদের বাস্তবতার মিল খুঁজে পায়, তখন তারা নিজেরাই পরিবর্তনের পথ বের করতে পারে। ভবিষ্যতে গ্রুপ সল্ট পরিচালনার সময় আমি অন্য কমিউনিটির ইতিবাচক গল্পগুলো শেখার উপকরণ হিসেবে আরও বেশি ব্যবহার করতে আগ্রহী।
