Breaking Social Norms through Positive Masculinity

One afternoon, three young men in the community had an open discussion about masculinity. The topic is actually very common, but due to social perceptions and traditional beliefs, there was very little opportunity to talk about or practice this topic until now. Now, there is a gradual change in that place, and this discussion was an example of that. Earlier, a session on masculinity was conducted with them using the SALT method, where they had the opportunity to think about their own experiences, beliefs and behaviors through questions. This discussion was the next reflection of that session, where the young men openly shared the real changes that had occurred in their lives.

In the discussion, they said that there had been a major change in their thinking about the socially accepted concept of masculinity.

Earlier, they thought that showing authority within the family was the main expression of masculinity. There was also a tendency to think of themselves as different and more powerful than other family members. However, they mentioned that after the discussion on masculinity, these ideas had changed. There was a place to give importance to mental issues, they are gradually coming out of many old concepts imposed by society and are walking on the path of change.

 Among the three young men, Yanur shares one of her personal experiences. She says that once she could not even imagine that she would sit and talk with the Srabantis of the Jamuna team, even though they were neighbors. This change has come in her life after the session. This change was empowering not only for Yanur, but also for the Srabantis. Srabanti mentions in her words that these changes are also being accepted by her family and a mindset of allowing things has been created, which is an important progress.

Standing next to the girls, sitting and talking with them as equals were the most significant aspects of the change.

These changes are having a positive impact on the personal lives of the young men as well as on their social relationships. Relationships are becoming more humane, sensitive and based on mutual respect.

কমিউনিটিতে এক বিকালে তিনজন যুবকের সঙ্গে masculinity নিয়ে একটি খোলামেলা আলোচনা হয়। বিষয়টি আসলে খুবই সাধারণ, কিন্তু সামাজিক ধ্যানধারণা ও প্রচলিত বিশ্বাসের কারণে এতদিন এই বিষয় নিয়ে কথা বলার বা চর্চা করার সুযোগ খুব কম ছিল। এখন সেই জায়গায় ধীরে ধীরে পরিবর্তন আসছে, আর এই আলোচনাটি ছিল তারই একটি উদাহরণ।  এর আগে তাদের সঙ্গে SALT পদ্ধতিতে masculinity বিষয়ক একটি সেশন পরিচালিত হয়েছিল, যেখানে প্রশ্নের মাধ্যমে তারা নিজেদের অভিজ্ঞতা, বিশ্বাস ও আচরণ নিয়ে ভাবার সুযোগ পেয়েছিল। এই আলোচনা ছিল সেই সেশনের পরবর্তী প্রতিফলন, যেখানে যুবকেরা নিজেদের জীবনে ঘটে যাওয়া বাস্তব পরিবর্তনগুলো খোলামেলাভাবে শেয়ার করে।

আলোচনায় তারা জানায়, সামাজিকভাবে প্রচলিত masculinity ধারণা নিয়ে তাদের ভাবনায় বড় ধরনের পরিবর্তন এসেছে। আগে তারা মনে করত, পরিবারের মধ্যে কর্তৃত্ব দেখানোই পুরুষত্বের মূল প্রকাশ। পরিবারের অন্য সদস্যদের তুলনায় নিজেকে আলাদা ও বেশি ক্ষমতাশালী ভাবার প্রবণতাও ছিল। তবে masculinity নিয়ে আলোচনার পর এসব ধারণায় পরিবর্তন এসেছে বলে তারা উল্লেখ করে। মানসিক বিষয়গুলোকে গুরুত্ব দেওয়ার জায়গা তৈরি হয়েছে, সমাজ কর্তৃক আরোপিত অনেক পুরোনো ধ্যানধারণা থেকে তারা ধীরে ধীরে বেরিয়ে আসছে এবং পরিবর্তনের পথে হাঁটছে।

তিনজন যুবকের মধ্যে ইয়ানুর তার একটি ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতার কথা শেয়ার করে। সে জানায়, একসময় সে কল্পনাও করতে পারত না যে প্রতিবেশী হয়েও যমুনা টিমের শ্রাবন্তীদের সঙ্গে একসাথে বসে কথা বলবে। সেশনের পর এই পরিবর্তন তার জীবনে এসেছে। এই পরিবর্তন শুধু ইয়ানুর জন্য নয়, শ্রাবন্তীদের জন্যও স্বত্বীদায়ক ছিল। শ্রাবন্তী তার কথায় উল্লেখ করে যে, তার পরিবার থেকেও এই পরিবর্তনগুলোকে গ্রহণ করা হচ্ছে এবং বিষয়গুলো অনুমতি দেওয়ার মানসিকতা তৈরি হয়েছে, যা একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অগ্রগতি।

মেয়েদের পাশে দাঁড়ানো, তাদের সঙ্গে সমানভাবে বসে কথা বলা এই জায়গাগুলোই ছিল সবচেয়ে উল্লেখযোগ্য পরিবর্তনের দিক।

এই পরিবর্তনগুলো যুবকদের ব্যক্তিগত জীবনের পাশাপাশি সামাজিক সম্পর্কেও ইতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলছে। সম্পর্কগুলো আরও মানবিক, সংবেদনশীল ও পারস্পরিক সম্মানভিত্তিক হয়ে উঠছে।
