Deep listening reveals the strength within

Around us, there are countless people who surrender to life’s hardships. Yet, there are also those who transform their pain and struggles into strength. Shaheen is one such person. His story is not only about hardship but also about indomitable courage, patience, and humanity.

Shaheen’s childhood was filled with difficulties. His father married twice and was indifferent towards the family. As a result, his mother had to take on the responsibility of running the household. Despite her limited means, she tried her best, but poverty eventually forced Shaheen to give up his studies. He began working at a cinema hall. At first, he enjoyed the work, but fate had other plans. In 2002, a terrible tragedy struck Mymensingh when four cinema halls were bombed simultaneously. The hall where Shaheen worked was among those attacked. He was severely injured in the blast and had to spend a long time in the hospital. The greatest blow came when he lost both of his legs. “At first, it felt like my life was over. Darkness surrounded me everywhere,” he recalled. Yet even amidst such despair, Shaheen did not give up. With the help of artificial limbs, he started walking again. Still, society did not accept him easily. While looking for work, he faced humiliation again and again.

But he made up his mind—he would create his own livelihood. During this challenging time, an extraordinary woman entered his life. With love and trust, she married him, ignoring his physical disability. Today, they have three children: the eldest daughter is in college, the middle daughter goes to school, and the youngest is only a year old. To support his family, Shaheen took a loan and bought a used auto-rickshaw. Learning to drive it was yet another challenge. People mocked him, saying, “You don’t even have legs—how will you drive? Even we struggle with our healthy bodies.” But Shaheen did not lose hope. Finally, with the help of a friend, he learned to drive. Today, he runs his household by driving that rickshaw every day. More than that, he also serves others. If any student cannot afford the fare, he drops them off for free. Shaheen has become an inspiration not only for his family but also for society. He has shown that it is not poverty but determination that makes a person truly strong. It is not physical ability but mental strength that leads people forward. And above all, the greatest virtue lies in forgetting one’s own pain to help others. “I want my children to grow up to be good human beings—honest, courageous, and compassionate,” .

Shaheen teaches us that no matter how great the obstacle, one must not stop. Even after falling again and again, we must rise. To win the battle of life, the greatest weapon is the strength of the mind. His story touches our hearts deeply. He has proved that “No matter how difficult life may be, with determination, the impossible can indeed be made possible.”

আমাদের চারপাশে অসংখ্য মানুষ আছেন, যারা জীবনের কষ্টের কাছে হার মানেন। আবার কিছু মানুষ আছেন, যারা দুঃখ-কষ্টকে শক্তিতে রূপান্তর করেন। শাহীন ভাই এমনই একজন মানুষ। তার গল্প শুধু সংগ্রামের নয়, বরং অদম্য সাহস, ধৈর্য আর মানবতার প্রতিচ্ছবি। শাহীন ভাইয়ের ছোটবেলা ছিল দুঃখ-কষ্টে ভরা। তার বাবা দুইবার বিয়ে করেন এবং সংসারের প্রতি উদাসীন ছিলেন। ফলে সংসারের হাল ধরতে হয় তার মাকে। সীমিত সামর্থ্য নিয়ে মা চেষ্টা করলেও, একসময় দরিদ্রতার চাপে শাহীন ভাইকে পড়াশোনা ছাড়তে হয়। তিনি কাজ শুরু করেন একটি সিনেমা হলে। শুরুতে কাজটা ভালোই লাগছিল, কিন্তু ভাগ্য অন্য পথে এগোচ্ছিল। ২০০২ সালে ময়মনসিংহে ঘটে এক ভয়াবহ ঘটনা, একযোগে চারটি সিনেমা হলে বোমা বিস্ফোরণ। শাহীন ভাই তখন যে সিনেমা হলে কাজ করতেন, সেটিও ছিল আক্রান্তদের মধ্যে। বিস্ফোরণে তিনি গুরুতর আহত হন। দীর্ঘদিন হাসপাতালে কাটাতে হয় তাকে। সবচেয়ে বড় আঘাত আসে যখন তিনি হারান তার দুটি পা। "শুরুতে মনে হয়েছিল জীবন শেষ হয়ে গেছে। চারপাশের অন্ধকার তাকে গ্রাস করছিল।" এসবের মধ্যে তিনি হাল না ছেড়ে কৃত্রিম পা দিয়ে আবার হাঁটতে শুরু করেন তিনি। তবুও সমাজ তাকে সহজভাবে নেয়নি। কাজ খুঁজতে গিয়ে বারবার শুনেছেন অপমানের কথা। কিন্তু তিনি স্থির করেছিলেন, নিজের কর্মক্ষেত্র নিজেই তৈরি করবেন। এই কঠিন সময়ে তার জীবনে আসেন এক অসাধারণ নারী। ভালোবাসা আর আস্থার বন্ধনে তারা সংসার শুরু করেন। আজ তাদের তিন সন্তান, বড় মেয়ে কলেজে পড়ে, মাঝের মেয়ে স্কুলে যায় আর ছোট মেয়ের বয়স মাত্র এক বছর। সংসার চালাতে তিনি ঋণ নিয়ে একটি পুরনো অটোরিকশা কিনলেন। কিন্তু শেখা ছিল আরও বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ। মানুষ বলেছিল, "তোমার তো পা নেই, তুমি কীভাবে চালাবে? আমাদের সুস্থ শরীরেও কষ্ট হয়।" কিন্তু তিনি হাল ছাড়েননি। অবশেষে এক বন্ধুর সহায়তায় চালানো শিখলেন। আজ তিনি প্রতিদিন সেই রিকশা চালিয়ে সংসার চালান। শুধু তাই নয়, যদি কোনো শিক্ষার্থী ভাড়া দিতে না পারে, তিনি বিনামূল্যে পৌঁছে দেন গন্তব্যে। আজ শাহীন ভাই শুধু নিজের পরিবারই নয়, সমাজেরও এক প্রেরণা। তিনি প্রমাণ করেছেন, দারিদ্র্য নয়, ইচ্ছাশক্তিই মানুষের আসল শক্তি। শারীরিক অক্ষমতা নয়, মানসিক শক্তিই মানুষকে সামনে এগিয়ে নেয়। নিজের কষ্ট ভুলে অন্যকে সাহায্য করাই জীবনের প্রকৃত মহত্ত্ব। "আমি চাই আমার সন্তানরা মানুষ হোক, সৎ, সাহসী আর পরোপকারী।" — (শাহীন ভাই)। শাহীন ভাই আমাদের শিখিয়ে দেন, জীবনে যতো বড় বিপদই আসুক, থেমে গেলে চলবে না। বারবার পড়ে গিয়েও উঠে দাঁড়াতে হয়। জীবনযুদ্ধে জয়ী হতে চাইলে মনের শক্তিই সবচেয়ে বড় হাতিয়ার। শাহীন ভাইয়ের গল্প আমাদের হৃদয় ছুঁয়ে যায়। তিনি প্রমাণ করেছেন, "জীবন যতই কঠিন হোক না কেন, যদি মনোবল থাকে তবে অসম্ভবকেও সম্ভব করা যায়।"
