I like creating spaces for learning. I have done this for many years in English as a foreign language teaching/learning, and more recently through the pedagogy of problem based learning and similar learning methods applied to innovation and disability and health. Born and bred in Northern England I have now lived and worked in France for more than half my life. I studied pharmacology and in France Social sciences looking at the interactions of culture and health and public health. I have also set up spaces for intercultural listening and sharing to help people understand what is involved in having a culture(s)and identity(ies) and how this is often linked to power and the possibility to wield power.
to create spaces for discussion, debate and the formulation of projects by local communities enabling people to have better and decent lives where all people have equal respect and discrimnation does not exist. On a wider more macro level set up different-( forms of organisation where hierarchies (power) cause no or less damage and leadership is there to enable other people rather than to build personal empires. Where people have the opportnity to influence how their worlds are organised and managed and what their worlds aim to do and produce. Where public health professionals and other experts are there not to decide but to give information offer advice when asked and help people to demonstrate that plans that have evolved through incorporating the views of the people (those that are traditionally 'targeted') are better and lead to better results and feel better to the people concerned than solutions imposed on them from above. To allow existing taken for granted solutions and norms to be questioned and not just accepted because they exist, often just as much for the people working in the organisations as for the people the same organisations are there to help; Furthermore before helping people (and possibly reducing them to people that are in need and must be helped) attempt to give them the conditions in which they themselves can help themselves, fend for themselves and in general have as much control over their own lives as possible with others.
I'm proud of:
helping students trainees and other people to explore these issues especially connected to inequality and health inequities and to come up with fairer and enabling solutions which are based on what people they themselves seek and can offer rather than on taken for granted representations, institutionalised rules, taken for granted ways of life and living spaces.
