I'm a physicist and basic science journalist who moved to world health issues in the 1990s, but became frustrated by the usual top-down models of aid, development, and the conduct of supposedly relevant research - but overwhelmed by the wisdom I found among people 'at the end of the track'.
My dream:
That the worlds of natural science and simple humanity be combined in an epiphany of understanding and compassion, for all of us and for our fragile planet; and that I can create a place for that in my own writing and magazine.
I'm proud of:
Always remaining open - letting my understanding grow.

Hi Gaston, hi Laurence - Thank you for the kind welcome! I look forward very much to participating. I've been struck deeply on my travels about how many utterly different ways there are to live: I learned that we are not individuals but are made be each other. Our lives and values would be transformed by a shift in history and place, and little would remain the same in us. John Donne wrote beautifully, 'No man is an island, entire of itself...', but I think our connections go even further. They create us. All strength to our combination in peace! Robert
Dear Robert. I have to mention I really like your profile. 'The wisdom at the end of the track' I have experienced many times as well. As your concerns relate to characteristics and not people. Like Thich Nath Hanh, a famous buddhist said: Man is never our enemy, it's anger, hatred, jealousy and fear.
And your question: Can it grow alone? is at the heart of some of our internal discussions. It's certainly complementary to many other things and in my view in many cases a prerequisite instead of 'just another strategy'.
Welcome to Community Life Competence! Could you please add your photo as it adds a human touch to your profile (go to 'settings' then 'upload photo')?
We hope you will enjoy the opportunity to communicate with colleagues and friends in all parts of the world.
Please take some time to walk through this virtual Constellation home.
You will find many opportunities for connecting, sharing and learning.
Connecting: Under the Tab with Members you find people to connect or to reconnect with directly, on their personal pages. The search function will certainly be of help! We encourage you to make your own page your personal ‘home’ which allows for a conversation from human to human - online.
Sharing Experiences: In the blogs we are sharing our experiences with local responses and the competence process. These experiences and stories do not require a discussion or exchange, but comments are welcome! Some stories in the blog link directly to our knowledge asset (see tab knowledge asset).I am sure your experience will be useful to others!
Learning Together: Our Forum is the place where we learn together. If you want to discuss an element of the Competence process, or other issues related to local responses, please contribute to the forum.
Again, we are very happy to have your voice on Community Life Competence and look forward to your contributions.
You will find some suggestions and rules of play under the ‘help’ tab.

A very happy birthday Robert!

In any case, a warm welcome.
