Profile Information

David Evans
United Society, known as Us. This is our new name which will be officially launched in November 2012
About Me:
I am the director for community engagement at Us (the new name for USPG). We are passionate about strengths-based development and that there is no real development without engagement of and by people in conversation which is respectful and inclined to listen.
My dream:
Our new name which is Us, is an invitation to be part of something bigger. We dream of every person, every community sharing a full life. It is inclusive and says that with Us there is no 'them'. It sums up our dream of communities responding together to their hopes and concerns.
I'm proud of:
The role of some churches in facilitating an new future, with imagination and hope. At Us, we support the Anglican churches around the world and are working to help to raise the bar on their practice of sustainable, transformational development which is holistic and truly integrated.

It is estimated that food production globally needs to double in the next 20 years. This fact alone is sufficient to throw the spotlight on food security as the principal challenge facing Africa and pretty much everywhere else.

It was really encouraging to read of one initiative in Kenya that has demonstrated an approach that gives real hope by…

Strengths in unlikely places

I am sitting with members of a hijira group in western Bangladesh. They asked to see my colleague and I when we visited a church group in Meherpur. The hijira are some of the most isolated and marginalised groups in South Asian society. Hijira are a transgender minority group who often describe themselves as professional wedding dancers. They are frequently the target for abuse, discrimination and violent assault.

The church development workers in Meherpur had done a great job of…

What's church got to do with it? @uspg

This piece can be used in a variety of ways: As an item of celebration, as a discussion starter, as a means of meditation and reflection, as an inspiration for those who want to make a difference but don't know how.

What is the role of the local church in bringing good change in local communities?

It’s a unique role. It’s an essential role. It’s a role that is built on relationships. It’s a role that is overlooked most of the time. It is a political role. It’s…
