3. Plan and Create: Social entrepreneurship/business plan development - improvement of our communities, put on paper, and put in practice.

4. Work: Mini internships and collaboration with prominent local businesses, nonprofits, or other institutions relating to each student groups' business/social plan. This strand will also feature notable speakers and mentors.

7. One World: Simulated implementation of business/social plans, compiled to create the "One World City" exposition, featuring youth-led workshops, and youth speakers and artist from the program in a day-long event. A concurrent Opportunity Fair will connect participating youth with top-ranked schools and international programs, including exchange, education, internship, and work options.

Day 2

Upon completion of the YLDP, youth will be guided to maintain and expand the relationships, skills, and knowledge they developed over the summer in a follow-up program called “Day 2.”

“Day 2” programming will include quarterly regional meetings, international virtual forums, competitions, guided opportunities to maintain international connections, yearly personal letters, return facilitation, and regional group implementation of select business/social plans— with One World Grants available to groups nearing the implementation phase.

General Logistics

The One World 2011 YLD Program will:

1. Take place from July 5 to July 25, 2011.

2. Take place at a secured Seattle university (housing, meals, and core programming).

3. House students in university dorms, separated by gender.

4. House national chaperones as well as One World 2011 program staff in dorms.

5. Provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks with halal options available.

6. Bus students on excursions to cultural and sporting events in the Greater Seattle area.

7. Respect students’ religious and cultural requirements within reason (i.e. divided female/male prayer room).

8. Include teachers, facilitators, and/or chaperones from the respective countries.

9. Maintain communication with each students’ family as needed and appropriate.

10. Provide cultural training to staff, volunteers, and other participants.

Student Profile

One World 2011 YLD Program will include approximately:

1. Students, between the ages of 15 and 18, who are motivated, passionate, want to contribute to local and global progress, and speak intermediate English.

2. One third of students will be from the United States.

3. Two thirds of students will be from predominantly Muslim countries, with an attempt to include students from Afghanistan, Bashkortostan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Syria, Tatarstan, and Turkey amongst others.

Actual numbers will vary depending on numbers of applications from each country, applicant qualifications, and situational factors.

Each country’s cohort will include an almost equal number of boys and girls, with each gender representing at least 40% of the whole cohort.

Preference will be given to students whose access to such opportunities is limited, particularly by finances.

Physical disabilities and learning disabilities will not be a barrier to programming and should not prevent an interested student from applying.
