"Thanks Ricardo and Olivia for these thoughts, which resonate with our journey with communities and organisations over so many years.  I was reminded again during the recent visit in Guyana about the compelling nature of SALT, and how 1 SALT…"

About Me:
I am a founding member of the Constellation for AIDS Competence. Working for the past 20 years in stimulating and connecting local responses as part of a facilitation team. Born in the United States, but a citizen of the world.
My dream:
That people and communities across the world would be connected through their strengths
My concern:
That organisations and systems that control so many of the resources and policy are far behind local communities in the response
I'm proud of:
Being a learner, being a participant in local response and being part of world-wide team of so many fantastic people
What I think of Community Life Competence:
We didn't invent it....we learned it from local communities
What do I want to do to spread Community Life Competence?
Facilitate AIDS Competence in my community, Share about AIDS Competence with potential partners; friends; colleagues, I want to apply SALT in my own life (S: Stimulate; Support; A: Appreciate; L: Listen; Learn; Link; T: Transfer; Team), I want to share my experience on my blog in Ning
The small secretariat of the Constellation also needs help. Do you want to help? I want to:
Writing skills, Share AIDS Competence with potential partners, online facilitation, Other
If you choose other, please specify
Support to mentor new coaches/facilitators

WASH and Community Life Competence

Posted on April 22, 2011 at 1:07am 0 Comments

The past 2 weeks have found Boris, Autry and I in Suriname working with a fantastic team to integrate WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) with the community life competence process.  There is the phrase - 'Water is Life'.  We have heard reflections this week that you can have water, but no real 'life' in communities.  Trust, respect and vision are also needed.  The skilled, passionate, committed team in Suriname is going to teach us all alot about this in the coming months.  Thank you in…

Integration - More than just adding more pieces!

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 2:49pm 2 Comments

We had a very inspiring visit to Ethiopia last week with IIRR and partners who have been working hard at integrating elements of ACP into their existing Community Managed Risk Reduction (CMDRR) Strategy.  You will see the excellent photos and video clips that Ricardo has been uploading over the past couple of days.

It got me thinking about the word 'integration'.  Seems everyone is using it these days, and as with many things we start saying it and stop thinking deeply about…

IIRR Ethiopia - Communities Moving Faster Than Organisations!

Posted on November 16, 2010 at 11:29am 5 Comments

Last week, we had the opportunity for the second support visit to IIRR Partners in Ethiopia. We were hosted by JeCCDO in Dire Dawa and joined by SOS Borana. On the second day of the visit, we spent a few hours thinking through how ACP and the IIRR Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) processes compliment and add value to each other. Then we made a visit to a community where 7 months ago JeCCDO had 'introduced' the dream and self-assessment. We spent the first hour sitting with… Continue

IIRR/CORDAID Support visit to Ethiopia Partners

Posted on April 27, 2010 at 9:50am 4 Comments

The Constellation has the privilege of partnership with IIRR/CORDAID partners in Ethiopia. The focus is on integrating AIDS Competence with their community managed disaster risk reduction process. We are in the midst of the first follow-up visit, following an exposure visit to Kenya and an initial training workshop in 2009.

The first week was spent in Borana, hosted by SOS. SOS works with pastoral communities and here are some reflections from that visit:
