Empowering Disability through SALT: The Story of Dilruba’s Determination

As the morning breeze gently sweeps through Pechakola village, the air is filled with the sound of laughter from young children heading towards Pechakola Government Primary School (No. 73). Among them is a girl named Dilruba Khatun (Nipa), only 11 years old. Born with a physical disability, she colors every day of her life with a new possibility.

Dilruba comes from a modest family. Her father, Md. Delwar Hossain (30), is a day laborer, and her mother, Tania Khatun (26), manages the household. Despite financial hardship, the parents dream of a bright future for their daughter. Dilruba is the eldest of two brothers and two sisters in this small family (Household No. 359).

A New Light through SALT Dialogue

When the BRED SALT Facilitators began working on the issue of children with disabilities in Pechakola village using the SALT methodology, they first met Dilruba's mother. The dialogue slowly unveiled a unique story of a small girl's indomitable willpower and deep love for education.

During the SALT conversation, Tania Khatun said, My daughter is disabled, but she has a lot of mental strength. She wants to go to school, learn, and achieve something big.

These words truly reveal Dilruba's strength. The SALT team encouraged Tania Khatun to give her daughter equal opportunities like others. Slowly, a change began to take place in Tania.

Days of Hardship and Emotional Pain

One day, the family's financial struggles grew so severe that Tania Khatun told her daughter: "Dilruba, I won't be able to pay for your education anymore.

These simple words shook Dilruba's heart. She refused to eat all day and burst into tears. Her crying seemed like an invisible protest, "I also have the right to learn."

The very next day, a change came over her mother's heart. She realized that her daughter's strength was not just in her body, but hidden within her spirit.

A Unique Love for Education

Dilruba goes to school every day, even though walking is difficult for her. Carrying a school bag on her shoulder is tough, but a smile always remains on her face. She never complains; instead, she knows how to turn hardship into joy.

According to her teachers, "Dilruba is very attentive in class. Her interest in studies inspires everyone."

Debut at the Knowledge Fair

Dilruba took to the stage for the first time at the Knowledge Fair-2025, organized by BRED, to recite a poem. The girl who previously lost confidence due to shyness and her physical limitations, captivated the entire community with her voice that day. 

Her mother could not hold back tears of pride. She said, "Before, I thought she wouldn't be able to do anything. Now I understand my daughter is my inspiration."

Dilruba's Transformation

• She now considers herself capable, not disabled.
• The community's perception of her has also changed. Everyone sees her as a source of inspiration.
• Her mother, Tania Khatun, now encourages other parents to recognize their children's potential.

The Strength We Saw in Dilruba

Dilruba is a living embodiment of determination, courage, and optimism. Her physical disability has never stopped her. Instead, she has shown that a person's greatest strength lies in their willpower.

What We Learned from Her

• A potential power is hidden inside every child, and the main task is to recognize it.
• A little encouragement and love can change a child's life.
• Change starts from within the family.

The Impact of SALT

The awareness that grew in the parents through the SALT dialogue is the core of this change. This is not just a story of one child, but of the psychological development of an entire family. Now, Tania Khatun herself tells her neighbors, "Disability is not a weakness; it is a different kind of strength."

Community Challenges

Despite growing awareness about children with disabilities, many challenges remain. Many families still believe that sending children with disabilities to school is pointless that they won't be able to work or build a future. Some parents feel ashamed to take their children outside. As a result, many children remain confined to their homes, isolated from society.

However, the hopeful news is that children like Dilruba are now bringing about a change in those old beliefs. Through the SALT dialogue, people are now learning that disability is not a curse; rather, there is a distinct talent and potential within them.

পেঁচাকোলা গ্রামের সকালের হাওয়া যখন ধীরে ধীরে বইতে থাকে, তখন ৭৩ নম্বর পেঁচাকোলা সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের পথে ছোট ছোট বাচ্চাদের হাসির শব্দে ভরে ওঠে চারপাশ। তাদের মাঝেই এক মেয়ে দিলরুবা খাতুন (নিপা), বয়স মাত্র ১১ বছর। জন্মগতভাবে শারীরিক প্রতিবন্ধী হলেও, জীবনের প্রতিটি দিনকে সে একেকটি নতুন সম্ভাবনায় রাঙিয়ে তোলে।

দিলরুবার পরিবার সাধারণ একটি পরিবার। বাবা মোঃ দেলোয়ার হোসেন একজন দিনমজুর, বয়স মাত্র ৩০ বছর। মাতা তানিয়া খাতুন, বয়স ২৬। সংসার চলে টানাপোড়েনে, তবুও মা-বাবা মেয়ের ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে স্বপ্ন দেখেন। হাউজহোল্ড নম্বর ৩৫৯-এর এই ছোট্ট পরিবারে দুই ভাই দুই বোনের মধ্যে দিলরুবা সবার বড়।

SALT কথোপকথনের মাধ্যমে এক নতুন আলো

BRED-এর সল্ট ফ্যাসিলিটেটররা আমরা যখন SALT পদ্ধতির মাধ্যমে পেঁচাকোলা গ্রামে প্রতিবন্ধী শিশুদের বিষয়টি নিয়ে কাজ শুরু করি, তখনই প্রথম পরিচয় হয় দিলরুবার মায়ের সঙ্গে। কথোপকথনের মধ্যে ধীরে ধীরে উন্মোচিত হয় এক অন্যরকম গল্প একটি ছোট্ট মেয়ের অদম্য ইচ্ছাশক্তি ও শিক্ষার প্রতি গভীর ভালোবাসা।

SALT কথোপকথনের সময় তানিয়া খাতুন জানালেন, “আমার মেয়ে প্রতিবন্ধী, কিন্তু ওর মনের জোর অনেক। ও চায় স্কুলে যাক, শিখুক, বড় কিছু হোক।”
এই কথাগুলোই দিলরুবার শক্তির পরিচয় দেয়। SALT টিম তানিয়া খাতুনকে উৎসাহ দেয় যেন তিনি মেয়েকে অন্যদের মতো সমান সুযোগ দেন। ধীরে ধীরে তানিয়ার ভেতর পরিবর্তন আসতে শুরু করে।

অভাব আর মানসিক যন্ত্রণার দিনগুলো

একদিন সংসারের আর্থিক কষ্ট এতটাই বেড়ে যায় যে, তানিয়া খাতুন মেয়েকে বলে ফেলেন
“দিলরুবা, তোমাকে আর পড়াতে পারবো না।”

এই একটি কথাতেই কেঁপে ওঠে দিলরুবার মন। সে সেদিন সারাদিন না খেয়ে থাকে, কান্নায় ভেঙে পড়ে। তার কষ্টের কান্না যেন এক অদৃশ্য প্রতিবাদ “আমারও অধিকার আছে শেখার।”

তারপরের দিন থেকে মায়ের মনেও একটা পরিবর্তন আসে। তিনি বুঝতে পারেন, মেয়ের শক্তি কেবল শরীরে নয়, মনের মধ্যেই লুকিয়ে আছে।

শিক্ষার প্রতি এক অনন্য ভালোবাসা

দিলরুবা প্রতিদিন স্কুলে যায়, যদিও হাঁটতে তার কষ্ট হয়। কাঁধে বইয়ের ব্যাগ নেওয়া তার জন্য কঠিন, তবু মুখে হাসি লেগেই থাকে। সে কখনো অভিযোগ করে না, বরং কষ্টকে আনন্দে পরিণত করতে জানে।

তার শিক্ষকদের মতে, “দিলরুবা ক্লাসে খুব মনোযোগী। লেখাপড়ার প্রতি ওর আগ্রহ সবাইকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে।”

Knowledge Fair-এ আত্মপ্রকাশ

ব্রেড আয়োজিত Knowledge Fair-২০২৫ এ প্রথমবারের মতো মঞ্চে উঠে দিলরুবা কবিতা আবৃত্তি করে। যে মেয়েটি আগে লজ্জায়, শারীরিক সীমাবদ্ধতার কারণে আত্মবিশ্বাস হারিয়ে ফেলত, সে সেদিন পুরো কমিউনিটিকে মুগ্ধ করে তোলে তার কণ্ঠে।

তার মা গর্বে চোখের জল মুছতে পারেননি। তিনি বলেছিলেন,
“আগে ভাবতাম ও কিছুই পারবে না, এখন বুঝি আমার মেয়েই আমার প্রেরণা।”

দিলরুবার পরিবর্তন

• সে এখন নিজেকে প্রতিবন্ধী নয়, সক্ষম মনে করে।
• কমিউনিটিতেও তার প্রতি দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি বদলে গেছে। সবাই তাকে অনুপ্রেরণার উৎস হিসেবে দেখে।
• মা তানিয়া খাতুন এখন অন্য অভিভাবকদেরও উৎসাহ দেন, যেন তারা সন্তানদের শক্তিকে চিনে নেয়।

 দিলরুবার মধ্যে যে শক্তি আমরা দেখেছি

দিলরুবা একাগ্রতা, সাহস, ও আশাবাদের এক জীবন্ত প্রতিচ্ছবি।
তার শারীরিক প্রতিবন্ধকতা কখনোই তাকে থামাতে পারেনি। বরং সে দেখিয়েছে—মানুষের সবচেয়ে বড় শক্তি তার মনের জোরে।

আমরা তার কাছ থেকে যা শিখেছি

• প্রতিটি শিশুর ভেতরেই এক একটি শক্তি লুকিয়ে আছে, যা চিনে নেওয়াই মূল কাজ।
• সামান্য উৎসাহ ও ভালোবাসা একটি শিশুর জীবন বদলে দিতে পারে।
• পরিবর্তন শুরু হয় পরিবারের ভেতর থেকেই।

 SALT-এর প্রভাব

SALT কথোপকথনের মাধ্যমে মা-বাবার মধ্যে যে সচেতনতা এসেছে, সেটিই এই পরিবর্তনের মূল। এটি শুধুমাত্র এক শিশুর নয়, বরং এক পুরো পরিবারের মানসিক বিকাশের গল্প। এখন তানিয়া খাতুন নিজেই প্রতিবেশীদের বলেন
“প্রতিবন্ধিতা দুর্বলতা নয়, এটা আলাদা শক্তি।”

কমিউনিটির চ্যালেঞ্জ

প্রতিবন্ধী শিশুদের নিয়ে সচেতনতা বাড়লেও এখনো অনেক চ্যালেঞ্জ রয়ে গেছে।
অনেক পরিবার এখনো মনে করে, প্রতিবন্ধী সন্তানদের স্কুলে পাঠালে কোনো লাভ নেই তারা কাজ করতে পারবে না, ভবিষ্যত গড়বে না। কিছু বাবা-মা লজ্জা পান সন্তানকে নিয়ে বাইরে যেতে। ফলে অনেক শিশুই ঘরবন্দি থেকে যায়, সমাজ থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে পড়ে।

 

তবু আশার কথা হলো দিলরুবার মতো শিশুরা আজ সেই পুরনো ধ্যানধারণায় পরিবর্তন আনছে। SALT কথোপকথনের মাধ্যমে মানুষ এখন শিখছে, প্রতিবন্ধিতা কোনো অভিশাপ নয়; বরং এদের মধ্যেও আছে আলাদা প্রতিভা ও সম্ভাবনা।
