There was a time in my life when I had many dreams about myself. I dreamed of working in a bank, and to fulfill that dream, I studied with full attention from childhood. After passing SSC, I started teaching children and also got involved in other small works. I passed SSC, HSC, and even my Honors in Accounting. But that dream was not in my fate. In my third year, my parents arranged my marriage. In our community, when a girl grows a little older, people keep asking, “When will you marry your daughter?” After marriage, my education stopped, and I moved to Sirajganj.

Life there was full of challenges, and while facing them, nine years passed without me realizing it. Later, I came back to my birthplace. After some days, I got an opportunity to work with the organization Alokito Kori and the ARC Initiative.

In English, “SALT'' means the thing we eat with food. But in ARC (Addressing Root Causes), SALT means: Support, Appreciate, Listen, Transfer, Team, Learn, and Link. Just as salt increases the taste of food, SALT helps to bring out people’s inner strengths, wishes, and dreams through stories. SALT shows the inside of a person. People always help others in different ways, but they don’t usually remember those things or share them. Only through the SALT approach is this possible.

Before knowing about SALT, I also never thought about my own inner strength. SALT is something,the more you practice, the more you learn. Now, whenever I do any work, I do AER (After Experience Reflection) to see what went well and what could be better. After joining the organization, I learned many new things like using WhatsApp, email, Zoom meetings, screen share, and many more. SALT helps to know a person’s wishes, strengths, and works.

One Friday, we went to Narayanganj, Rishipara, to do a SALT conversation with men. We had a long conversation with Ganesh Dada on the fifth floor. He became so engaged that the session continued for 2 hours. I already knew him because we are from the same community, but that day through SALT I came to know so many things about him. In 2018, he was elected in the Harijan Samaj Seba Sangha Committee in Narayanganj Tanbazar and stood as president. He has helped many people in need.

In our area, there is a small lane where community people live, but there was no bathroom. People had to use a far bathroom, which was very difficult, especially at night. Then Ganesh Dada built a bathroom with his own money so that those families would not suffer. He also helps people financially and physically in times of need. Whenever the water motor broke down, he collected money from the community and repaired it. His work for the community is really praiseworthy. And we could only learn these things through SALT conversation.

In Bangladesh, there are many NGOs working with communities. But our work is different. Most NGOs work on one fixed issue, like giving sewing training to women or supporting children’s education. These are good, but at the same time, they create dependency. Over time, people start to rely on NGOs and think, “We can only do something when the NGO gives us something.” They forget that NGOs or projects are temporary. After some time, they have to take responsibility for their own family and society.

The ARC Initiative (Addressing Root Causes) identifies problems from the root and solves them with community people. Through this, not only do people have SALT conversations, but I also developed personally. Before, I didn’t talk easily with others. Now I listen carefully. SALT conversations helped me build strong relationships not only with my family but also with the whole community. Through SALT, I can learn about a person’s proud moments and also learn many new things.

আমার জীবনে এমন একটা সময় ছিল যখন আমি নিজেরকে নিয়ে অনেক স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলাম।ব্যাংকে চাকরি করার স্বপ্ন ছিল,আর সেই স্বপ্নকে পূরণ করার জন্য ছোট বেলা থেকেই মনযোগ দিয়ে লেখাপড়া করি,S.S.C পাশ করার পর বাচ্চাদের পড়াই, আরোও বিভিন্ন কাজের যুক্ত থাকি।আমি SSC, HSC,এমনকি অনার্স ও Accounting নিয়ে পারি। তবে সেটা আমার ভাগ্যে ছিল না তাই third year এই বাবা মা আমাকে বিয়ে দিয়ে দেয়।কারন মেয়েরা একটু বড় হলেই কমিউনিটির মানুষেরা শুধু বলতে থাকে,"মেয়েকে বিয়ে কখন দিবেন?" আর বিয়ের পর আমার লেখাপড়া বন্ধ হয়, চলে যাই সিরাজগঞ্জে।সেখানে যাওয়ার পর আমার জীবনে অনেক Challenge আসে,আর সেগুলোর মোকাবেলা করতে করতে কখন ৯ বছর পার হয় বুঝতেই পারলাম না। এরপর আবার চলে আসি নিজের জন্ম স্থানে,এখানে এসে কিছু দিনপর কাজ করার সুযোগ হয়ে উঠে আলোকিত করি অর্গানাইজেশনে,ARC initiative এ। ইংরেজিতে SALT অর্থ হচ্ছে লবন।তবে Addressing Root Cause (ARC)তে SALT হচ্ছে- সমর্থন,উদ্দীপনা, প্রশংসা,শোনা,শেখা,

সংযোগ, দল ও ট্রান্সফার। যেভাবে লবন খাবারের স্বাদ বাড়ায়,তেমনি SALT এর মাধ্যমে মানুষের ভিতরে লুকিয়ে থাকা শক্তি, ইচ্ছা,আকাঙ্খা গল্পের দ্বারা বেরিয়ে আসে। কারন SALT মানুষের ভিতরের দিকটা বের করে আনে।মানুষ বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্ন জায়গায় কারো না কারো উপকার করে থাকে।তবে সেগুলো নাই মনে রাখে আর নাই সহজে কারো সাথে শেয়ার করে।শুধুমাত্র SALT এপ্রোচে এটা সম্ভব।SALTএর সাথে পরিচিত হওয়ার আগে আমিও কখনো নিজের ভিতরের শক্তি চিন্তা করতে পারি নাই।SALT এমন একটা জিনিস এটা যত করা হয় ততবেশি শিখা যায়।এখন আমি কোনো কাজ করলে তা AER করে দেখি কি ভালো হয়েছিল আর কি হতে পারতো।অর্গানাইজেশনে আসার পর থেকে আমি অনেক কিছু শিখতে পেরেছি যেমন-Whatsapp,Email,Zoom meeting,screen share, আরো অনেক কিছু শিখতে পেরেছি।SALT এর মাধ্যমে একজন মানুষের ইচ্ছা, শক্তি এবং তার কাজর দিক গুলো জানা যায়।

নারায়ণগঞ্জ রিশিপারায় পুরুষদের সাথে SALT conversation করার জন্য একদিন শুক্রবারে কাজ করি।তখন আমরা পাঁচ তলায় গণেশ দাদার সাথে SALT করি। উনিও আমাদের সাথে এমন ভাবে এঙ্গেজ হয় যেয়ে SALT করতে টানা ২ ঘন্টা লেগে যায়। এমনিতো দাদাকে আমি চিনি।কারণ আমরা একই কমিউনিটির তবে সেদিন SALT conversation করতে গিয়ে দাদার সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু জানা যায়।২০১৮ সালে দাদা নারায়ণগঞ্জ টানবাজারে হরিজন সমাজ সেবা সংঘ কমিটি তে ভোটে পাশ করে, সভাপতি পদে দাড়ান।এরপর দাদা অনেক সময় অনেক কে সাহায্য করে।আমাদের এলাকায় রাস্তার পাশে আর একটা গলি গেছে, সেখানেও আমাদের কমিউনিটির মানুষজন বসবাস করে। তবে সেদিকে কোনো বাথরুম ছিলো না।সে গলিতে যারা বসবাস করে সবাই এলাকার ভিতরের বাথরুম ব্যবহার করতো।যদিও সেটা তাদের জন্য দূরে ছিল, বিশেষ করে রাতের জন্য তাদের সমস্যা বেশি হতো,তখন গণেশ দাদা নিজের টাকা দিয়ে সেখানে বাথরুম বানায়,যাতে করে সেই গলিতে যারা থাকে তারা যেনো বাথরুমের ভুক্তভোগী না হয়।এছাড়াও তিনি অনেকের বিপদে অর্থ দিয়ে অথবা পরিশ্রম দিয়ে সহযোগিতা করে।পানির মটর যতবার নষ্ট হতো দাদা নিজেই কমিউনিটির কাছ থেকে একটা নির্দিষ্ট পরিমানে টাকা তুলে মটর ঠিক করে।দাদা সমাজের জন্য যেসব কাজ করেছে তা প্রশংসা যোগ্য।

এইযে দাদা নিজের কমিউনিটির জন্য সেসব কাজ করেছে তা আমরা জানতে পারলাম একমাত্র salt conversation এর মাধ্যমে।

বাংলাদেশে অনেক ধরনের NGO আছে যারা বিভিন্ন কমিউনিটি নিয়ে কাজ করে।তবে তাদের কাজ থেকে আমাদের কাজ পুরোটা ভিন্ন।অন্যন্যা NGO কাজ করে একটা নির্দিষ্ট বিষয় নিয়ে।কখনো তারা বাচ্চাদের লেখাপড়ার সুযোগ করে দেয় আথবা ১০-১২ জন মহিলাকে সেলাইমেশিনের প্রশিক্ষণ দিয়ে বিভিন্ন ভাবে কমিউনিটির মানুষদের সাহায্য করে থাকে।এগুলো থেকে মানুষ যেভাবে একদিকে উপকার পেয়ে থাকে অন্যদিকে দুর্বলতার শিকার হয়।দিনেরপর দিন জনগোষ্ঠীর মানুষেরা NGOএর উপর নির্ভর হয়ে থাকে।তারা ভেবে নেয় NGOএসে যখন আমাদের কিছু দিবে তখনই আমরা কিছু করতে পারবো।তারা অনেক সময় এটা প্রকাশও করে।তবে কমিউনিটি মানুষেরা এটা উপলব্ধি করে না যে একটা NGO বা প্রজেক্ট নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের জন্য আসে।এরপর তাদেরকেই দ্বায়িত্ব নিতে হবে নিজের পরিবারের ও সমাজের।

Addressing Root Causes (ARC)ইনিসিয়েটিভ একটা সমস্যা চিহ্নিত করে তার গোড়া থেকে সমস্যা খুজে বের করে।এরপর কমিউনিটির মানুষদের দিয়ে সেই সমস্যার সমাধান করা হয়।এতে করে একদিকে কমিউনিটির মানুষের SALT কনভারসেশন হয় আর অন্যদিকে আমি আমার জীবনে অনেক উন্নতি করেছি।আগে সহজে কারো সাথে কথা বলতাম না। আর এখন অন্যদের কথা মনযোগ সহকারে শুনি।SALT কনভারসেশন এর মাধ্যমে শুধু পরিবারের সাথে নয় কমিউনিটির প্রত্যেকটা মানুষের সাথে একটা সুসম্পর্ক তৈরি হয়েছে।SALT conversation এর দ্বারা একজন মানুষের proud moment জানতে পারি, সেই সাথে অনেক কিছু শিখতেও পারি।
