Sometimes, a simple conversation can touch us more deeply than we expect. Recently, I had such an experience with one of my university staff members, a moment that reminded me how powerful genuine human connection can be.That day, I wasn’t feeling well. I was struggling physically and mentally, exhausted from my situation. Seeing my condition, she came forward with a warm greeting and gently asked about my health. Her tone was filled with empathy, not just concern. Slowly, our conversation began to flow — freely, openly, and without hesitation.

It started with something as ordinary as eating. I shared that, due to my severe sickness, I couldn’t eat properly. She nodded with understanding and mentioned that her chemotherapy had affected her teeth, making eating difficult for her too. That small connection opened the door to a much deeper sharing.

She began to tell me about her journey — her ongoing battle with cancer, the financial burden of treatment, and the emotional pain of her past. She spoke of facing continuous family challenges, and carrying heavy responsibilities despite her illness. Yet, there she was  showing up to work every day, doing her best, refusing to let her struggles define her.

At one point, she looked at me and said softly,

> “I don’t know why I’m sharing all this with you today… but I feel good talking to you.'

Her words touched me deeply. I felt honored to hold space for her story, a story of immense courage and quiet strength.

When I appreciated her resilience, she smiled and replied,

> “If I can keep trying to survive through all these challenges, then you can too. You will get well, I’m sure of it.”

At that moment, I felt an invisible transfer of strength — something we call “transfer” in SALT. Her courage became my inspiration. I realized how SALT is not limited to our community visits; it’s a way of being, of connecting with others through empathy, appreciation, and shared learning
