During a SALT session in the Basa Line area of Bhatpara Tea Garden with 13-year-old brother Nikhil Kharia, the dialogue on masculinity was truly inspiring. Through the SALT session, the strengths emerging from brother Nikhil were kindness and positive thinking.
How do you feel when you hear the word "man" or "male"?
In response to this question, brother Nikhil said:
* The strength of the family
* It is said in society that men never feel pain, but in real life, they do feel pain, and a real man is one who hides that fear and dedicates himself to his family.
* To act wisely
* To solve the family's problems
What are the things that make you feel like a man but you hesitate to share with others?
I always get scolded at home for doing any work. I do not want my friends to see it because I think about what they would think. And my mother scolds me for small things, so I cannot share this with anyone.
I learned from brother Nikhil as a facilitator.
The value of creating a safe space for honest sharing, and how having peers (friends) present can enhance discussions.
After Experience Reflection
What went well today and why?
I learned about a new topic. Gender is taught in school, but discussing masculinity today felt good.
What could have been better today?
It would have been better if my friends were also present to talk.
