Nigeria Interfaith Dialogue - 2010 - Opening Music (1 min)
Aishatu Ibrahim's original music and talk helped welcome participants into a safe place, preceding a variety of in-depth, face-to-face Dialogue experiences. The Muslims and Christians discovered their equal, shared humanity and that "an enemy is one whose story we have not heard. It was part of the 2nd International Conference on Youth and Interfaith Communication during October 22-24, 2010 in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. "Building Bridges Through Interfaith Dialogue and Youth Participation" was the theme for 200 diverse young women and men in face-to-face workshops that provided tools for successful communicaiton across old lines of fear and separation. It was initiated by the NEW ERA EDUCATIONAL AND CHARITABLE SUPPORT FOUNDATION of Jos, Nigeria, with facilitation by travelers from the co-sponsor 18-year-old JEWISH-PALESTINIAN LIVING ROOM DIALOGUE GROUP of San Mateo, California, USA. The African young adults returned home with new tools of Dialogue and it new quality of listening-to-learn. The hope was to unleash unprecedented cooperation and creativity needed to build successful, sustainable families, communities, and nations. A new quality of listening-to-learn is a condition of authentic Dialogue.

We speak of four kinds of communication:
(1) CONVERSATION is casual, safe, social, courteous, and sometimes superficial.
(2) DISCUSSION is like percussion and concussion -- ping-ponging back and forth well-formed ideas, waiting for what "I want to say" next.
(3) DEBATE is about winning, losing, favorites, dominating, overpowering, asserting, dismissing the "other," learning little or nothing.
(4) DIALOGUE is about discovering -- ever-deepening inquiry about what has meaning for the "other" and how another person experiences life. It is about expanding one's own world view to include all people and all of life. It includes a new quality of listening without "yes, but," as together we discover new social intelligence which none of us alone could have perceived. The experience is that "an enemy is one whose story we have not heard."

Yes, Rituu,
Many people "want" peace but not relationships.
This cannot be.
Change actually begins at the heart with successful face-to-face engagement and a new quality of listening-to-learn.
Only a safe heart, softened heart can instruct the brain that it is safe to move beyond rationalizing old thinking and mean acts -- beyond reptilian survival methods, beyond war.
