What is your experience on issues related to Sexual and reproductive health?

Dear All,

I hope everyone is fine and doing well at their ends. Its been quiet some time since I heard the members from this community so I thought lets get people thinking and talking.

Case is I tend to blog on Sexual Reproductive and health Rights in relation to India. I would be really happy if you people would spend some time reading some of my experiences and telling me what you think about them....are the situations in your own countries? Can we do something to mobilize ourselves and others to improve the situations?

So here are the links, please do pen down some of your thoughts as I would love to listen to them.

Dear Roli,

Thanks for putting up this discussion. What are you specifically looking to learn from others? It will help us to respond  and share our experiences. Indonesian team for instance has done substantial work on Adolescent Reproductive and sexual health (ARH).They also have a group which you can join

Would you like to share one of your stories on what worked when communities or individuals took action in the field of sexual and reproductive health.

Warmly,

Rituu

Hi Roli,

Wanted to draw your attention to the blog by Hui on her visit to an orphanage for HIV awareness of teenagers in Malaysia. http://aidscompetence.ning.com/profiles/blogs/outreach-program-for?...

I have also listed some experiences in response to Hui's blog. Might be of help to you. You can share your expereriences with Hui and also post your queries to ARH group here on this platform.

Dear Roli and Rituu..

Thanks to make other members start learning and sharing on this issues.  From ARH discussion  I found really inspiring group dream from youth competence member in Bandung Indonesia.  They dream is want to be smart muslim youths that has integration and best achievers at their study. I realize that start from discussion of adolescent reproductive health mode of competence move broaden into life competence.  SALT facilitating not only capacity to have more healthy life but also quality life for every believers at this global community.

Hi Roli,

Over here in Malaysia the current situation is that adults are afraid/shy/embaressed to discuss with their children about these issues. Educators in school say that they have not received enough training to prepare themselves to talk to children about these things. If the school takes its own initiative to organize talks/discussions about these issues, only then the children have proper access to these information. Otherwise, children will have to scout for information online, and that may lead them to misleading/inappropriate information.

I'm wondering what can a young person do to create an environment where parents are willing to share what they know?  Does anyone have experiences to share?

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

good question. I've initiated a project for youths in school to educate them about HIV/AIDS, bu the funny thing is that my parents know about it but they have never mentioned any topics regarding sex etc. I don't really know what to do about it either, haha.

Dear Geoff,

Jeanne faciltiated Community Action day with children in Cameroon on HIV and sexuality on World AIDS Day. Her sharing is in French and i have attempted google translate to translate into English. One of the action plans made by students was watching Television together. See the translation below.

Child health officials in the school talked with their friends and relatives on the occasion of International Day of AIDS on the theme: "Discover our strength to finally break the taboo surrounding AIDS and sexuality in the family" .

Children asked their parents: "Dear parents, we can analyze the forces that can allow us to speak without shame of AIDS as a family? .

A parent speaks with a smile: "I think that's sufficient knowledge of HIV and sexual health, because sometimes we are ignorant to address this matter" As and when forces were identified:
 Watching television together as a family,
 information such as is being done by the children of students at JMS;
 Knowledge of the negative effects of the taboo;
 Integration into the curriculum lessons on AIDS;
 The existing health club and a cultural school that engages the school community through songs, skits, educational talks, poems etc.. ... AIDS.
 The presence of a school like this that awakens us;
 The onset of illness or death in a family nearby who stirs debate;

But gradually as they advanced in the debate, the vulnerability factors were also cited and it may be noted: the weight of tradition (culture), age of children, availability of parents at home, the shame of talking about sex aves her children.

Some solutions have been proposed and translated into an action plan to be implemented in family:
 Stimulate family chats from events experienced at work, in class or in the neighborhood;
 Enter at meetings of the committee of parents of subjects on AIDS and sexual and reproductive health;
 Invite parents to attend the refunds and other events conducted by the students at school in connection with the HIV and sexual health;
 Visit AIDS patients in the hospital
