What is driving Incompetence ? ‘We are SALTy not because you pay us’

Throughout the GLF 2018 in Bandung, this question ‘what is driving Indo Competence?’ was driving me nuts and constantly buzzing in my head. Since, in Pakistan, I am also dreaming about a team who has this sort of commitment and depth. But I did not know that the answer I am searching for was lying in my heart and I was not tapping into its capacity to respond immediately. Such a pity I thought :-D Thanks to academia, I am more living in my head then heart. After meeting people in IndoCompetence, I learned that I should live in my head, heart, body and in my hands simultaneously. As I believe what makes IndoCompetence, IndoCompetence.

The words in the subtitle were uttered by Wiwin Winarni, one of the lifelines of IndoCompetence, during the opening sessions of GLF 2018 in Bandung. The beautifully carved wooden room inspired by the Sundanese architecture was packed with GLF participants. Their eyes were frozen on Wiwin and their ears were eagerly listening to what IndoCompetence is all about. I too like a little child who awaits for his goodies was keenly writing down my notes on my fancy ipad. This reminds of behaviours of baggers in my city whose eyes are freezed on the leftover food. They wait for people to move so that they can manage to satiate their hunger. The weather was perfect for the meeting, cloudy, a little cold, with lots of greenery around, and lastly a hot cup of tea in my hands :-D Also in the backdrop I had this amazing conversation with JL that I had during the breakfast. It was about the story of IndoCompetence: what it is and how it came into being.

Wiwin continued: ‘we apply SALT in our daily lives, we don’t get paid to use SALT...SALT is innate capacity of being human’. I was struck by this statement and was pondering over what goes into constructing it. What are the experiences behind these words? While I was ‘flying without wings’ (Lols), Wiwin soon pointed out to a lady and introduced her by saying she is our ‘Ministry of Magic’. Consider a pregnant women, perhaps near to full term, hoverning from one place to another, carrying a large smile on her face, not conscious of her quality of English and bodily moves, confident, assertive, and managing the entire tabbar of GLF :-D This is Dewi my dear friends, who I just described, one of the pillars of IndoCompetence. Wiwin continued the talk and said  ‘we make mistakes but we laugh at our mistakes.’

My eyes and ears could not believe what was happening. It took me a while to make sense of Wiwin’s words. In my experience of working in organizations, there is no word like mistakes. One has to produce quality and at any cost. Reprimanding some is a common response to mistakes. I was amazed by the collegiality of Wiwin’s team. They were running the entire show with slightest crease on their heads. I wondered what goes into making of this team? How teams like this are to be developed? My experience of attending GLF 2017 in Uganda was upside down.

Carrying my sense of wonder and eagerness I tried to followed ‘essence’ of IndoCompetence and following is my reflection.

Training and resources are not enough to ignite local responses and building teams like IndoCompetence. One has to get in touch to people’s deeper sources of knowing -- mind, heart, and will. Local responses are engendered by the quality of connection and consciousness people bring into work and team building processes. It is not just an intellectual inquiry or activity. One cannot lump some people together to form a team. Their energies and vibrations should be a match to each other. Intellectual rigor, training and resources are important to be functional. But to be ALIVE and BE in responding to life’s challenges, you need a different quality of consciousness, one that has the ability of accommodating polarities. Only those can laugh at their mistakes who have experienced it.

A culture of compassion, sharing, support, and appreciation is to be created. It is not cultivate just by preaching. It is perhaps cultivated through accepting people as they are and what they can contribute. You don't have to mold people into what you want them to BE. One has to allow people to grow and blossom as flowers do. This person may be rose or that one may be a daffodil. This person may be Neem Tree instead of a fruit tree. Neem has its own strengths and qualities that it brings into this world. Leaders’ responsibility is to tap into this sort consciousness. In Urdu, we say ‘hiray ki qadar johri janta hai’ which literally means ‘role of a goldsmith is to identify fullest potential of a stone’. People’s strength is at the heart of teamwork and leadership, leadership and teams are not machines of domestication. Teamwork is about co-creating the future that is in making as Theory U says; and IndoCompetence has this quality. They are not just behind achieving some program objectives. They are behind life and with the purpose of reclaiming it, as I see. Bravo! IndoCompetence (repeating it in spirit with Laurie :-D)

When people bring quality in how do they relate to each other and are conscious about their own deeper sources of knowing, local responses are self-sustained and ignited.

Hi Rituu,

I wanted to try to answer your questions.

Indeed we have SALT. But if SALT is not embodied in the mind and heart of the people who use it as a tool, it stay a tool for supporting community.

Also on your question about what bring people to decide to set up a support team? May be the need is not there. The collective support to get strengthened in the transfer of SALT is not yet seen as important. Or may be the connexion between individual purpose in life and the collective purpose to be a team as not been said.

I believe that what is not express don't really exist. In order to create a common understanding that we have a common interest to work together on a project, the stimulation of this expression has to happen. The connexion between my individual purpose and the collective purpose need to be expressed to make it visible and then the individual decision to be part of it or not, can be taken.

What a vivid description! I felt I was there. Brilliant Sohail! I could read your beautiful Urdu as well.

We have very few such teams in the Constellation. I can count them on my fingers- We need to think why some teams did not survive, did we not have SALT? for instance in my country. We as individuals use SALT in our life and work but the team does not exist anymore. The larger discussion- is  it practically possible to have teams in all the countries or it depends on the country context.
