The new terminology for Persons with Disabilities is "Differently-Abled" and this week in Guyana is DEAF awareness week and the visit to the Open Doors Centre highlighted the fact that there should be a "Special Needs" package for persons who are "hearing impaired" "speech impaired" "sight impaired" as well as persons who are "dyslexic". How will the Community Life Competence assist with facilitation to these "special needs" groups? Is there a place within the Community Life Competence to assist "Special needs"?

Rituu on the first visit there were five facilitators mainly from the Guyana National Faith and HIV Coalition and one Facilitator who is the Caribbean Regional Focal Person for Youth; on our next visit, there were eleven facilitators who are now part of the Guyana Competence Team and they all facilitated as the differently-abled were placed in groups as we did Self Assesssment and Action Planning. It was an "all inclusive" facilitation that was done very well!!!

When i said today we returned to conduct follow-up; I meant on Tuesday 28/09/2010; we had fun and shared and transferred our knowledge and also gained new knowledge from the participants. This is deaf awareness week( in Guyana) and so special emphasis is place on 'persons with disabilities' especially the hearing impaired! I was impressed at this group's ability to articulate where they were as a group and where they wanted to go as a group......

My Dear Sister I feel honoured to have you as my friend. I look forward to our continuous sharing of experiences as we practice SALT in our different Communities. It was truly "heartwarming" to experience SALT with 'people living with disabilities' also known as the "differently-abled". We did dream building and SALT on the 21.09.2010 where the students drew what they 'dreamed' of in their AIDS Competent Community; some desired 'affordable' taxi services; buildings that cater to their specific need (especially for those in wheelchair) and a Community rehabilitation Shop! What was common to all the 'dreams' is that they all desired to "play" i.e they all wanted Play Fields in their Communities! Today we returned to conduct follow-up and Self Assessment along with Action Planning!

Hi T.ituu, glad to be your friend.I have so much to share but I'll do so as we go on. Continue to flavour the world with SALT. Right now I'm working with Youths in a Faith Based Organisation and even though we are folowing the original Competence Process but I have added a way of getting them learn about SELF and we are getting there. We meet every Saturday at Church. This last week we worked on Decision makeing and Teamwork. Will keep you posted.
