Living Buddha, Living Christ... through SALT

(INAT: The Interfaith Network on AIDS in Thailand)

1. Inter-being and the sense of COMMUNITY
1. ความเป็นเหตุปัจจัยซึ่งกันและกัน (Inter-being) และความรู้สึกของการเป็นชุมชน (the sense of community)

2. The fear of death transformed into HOPE
Most of us experience fear of death at some point in time in our life.*

3. The energy of mindfullness leads to LOVE IN ACTION

This is a great learning for everyone on ning. As to me every Religion tells to follow the right path and to be helpful for our fellow human. Face may be different,Location may be different, food may be different, dress may be different Religion may be of different beliefs but the way to respond issue in a simple and effective way is one (SALT). Because SALT work according to the way of a community who need it but it does not need to change its concept.
One or our Constellation friends, from Burundi I think, wrote that one cannot help people to express their strengths if he/she is not strong himself/herself. I like this idea. We won't meet anobody if we come from nowhere. And I think that we can be grateful to what we were given, and that whe should consider looking very deep in this inheritage, under the layers of "beliefs" of all kinds laid down by people of power.
If we dig deep enough in these spiritual open doors, we will certainly meet fellow human beings.
Thanks Laurence for sharing what you learned from our meeting with Khun Prasert, "Deng".

I have a lot of respect for khun Prasert, one of the leaders of the PWA movemment in Thailand.

Khun Prasert is a man of vision. He inspires me since our first encounter in 1995 when he shared his vision of a Clear Sky, the name of his Center, next to the Doi Saket hospital.

I had learned only in the last few years that Deng was a Christian, and I wanted to know why.

What was he finding in christianity that he was not finding in buddhism?

Meanwhile I was attracted to buddhism, for it helps me so much taking care of myself.

Are we going to cross like ships in the night?

Was I oblivious of the teachings of the faith in which I was raised?

Then came the flash of Deng's statement. "For me SALT is a way to practice my religion".

Our paths are not crossing, they are merging!

Together with so many friends, our discovery of life will lead to many more wonderful moments.
Dear Laurence, and Gaston,

It is inspiring to read your thoughts on SALT and religions having the same foundations. For, the basic principle is the same in both SALT and the major religions. Namely, that we are all equal as human beings. Once we accept this equality, then we are willing to treat our fellow human beings, and respect their beliefs as much as we safeguard ours!

Also, as you both have said, it is important to look at what is common between the religions, than to look at the differences. By this, not only, do we learn more about our own religion, and that what others follow, but also, we can with a certainty presume that what is common in all religions could have only one source, namely: God.

Please accept my thanks for kick starting this fundamental topic, so basic to our existence as well as that of ACP.

SALT is one more way to make us aware that we are connected to each other, another modest and very practical way to make us experiment us that our happiness, our dignity - our survival as true human beings - lie in the way we look at each other,

...One of the many ways to express our faith in humanity. And, to me, Faith is the word, and it is pregnant of freedom. "Belief", often, is not.
An man I like very much, Maurice Bellet (psychoanalyst, philosopher, priest, 84 years old) wrote recently :
I try to translate :
Dear Laurence,

Thank you for this inspiring blog post.

Although my roots are Christian, I am currently drawn to a Buddhist practice in my daily life. In my youth, the institutional aspects of my religion dominated the spiritual added value it could have had. I think that's one of the reasons I searched for other spiritual paths. However, since I have practiced Buddhism (and mindfulness) in my daily life, I can see that I connect better again with my roots. I become more interested in Christianity, have deep discussions with Christians on their values and practices, and see the commonalities instead of the differences. It's truly beautiful.

I remember I was sitting once in a car in Southern India with Bobby, one of our coaches. He shared about his Salvation Army denomination and the implications, I shared about my Buddhist Sangha and our practices and I felt so connected! I tried to look beyond 'form' and 'name-tags' for the different aspects we shared and noticed that in general we were talking about the same things. Perhaps the most important conclusion was that the implications for how we live our life and interact with people was basically the same! And that's for me the most important thing. And that's where I see SALT connected with different religions.

I recently was in Nairobi for a faith-based meeting on 'HIV Competence in churches'. Although many denominations were present, the SALT principles resonated with most with them. Perhaps because it's so practical and looks beyond the 'form' and 'name-tags' and simply discusses the implications for how we can live our lives more fully and support others in doing the same. Many of the participants are members on Ning now and I invite them to share their experience.

Finally, I practice consciously non-attachment to my own (religious) views regularly to prevent fanaticism and dogmatism. I know the tradition that I follow is just one road that leads to the top of the mountain. It just happens to work for me.....It's wonderful to see others using other roads. Else we would have traffic jams :)
