Connecting local responses around the world
We are working with 30 villages in Bongaigaon (Assam) India using SALT approach to encourage immunization coverage and also communities to respond to health of thier children.
See the self assessment of Uttara khora gaon village in 1st Nov 2017 in which the community rated themselves at level 3 in immunization because there were drop outs. People used to get babies immunized and after 2-3 doses stop coming.
The self assessment made them realise what was the situation of immunization. The self help group had discussion on this. Aanganwadi worker was also present in the meeting. ANM and ASHA began to explain in detail about immunization during the immunization camp. There was conversation in the community and in Feb 2019 they village said that they were now at level 4 as the village is almost fully immunised. ANM and ASHA and ASHA supervisor said that there are still 2 cases where the parents have stopped coming to get their children immunized inspite of so many efforts they have not turned up. Now the SALT team will try to work on this with the community.
Thus the self assessment helped the community realise their level, what was the real situation and prompted action. The community was very happy that they had gone from level 3 to 4. They said that this was not common in their village. The health workers are also very happy.
