A Story of Resilience: A Mother and Daughter Face Challenges Together

I had a SALT conversation with my aunt, who is very close to me. I started by       asking how she and her daughter were doing. Then, I inquired if there was any story in her life that she felt particularly proud of. She seemed delighted, as no one had asked her anything like that before. I assured her that she could share her story with me, and I wouldn't tell anyone without her permission.

My aunt married against her family's wishes and has a daughter named Shorna, who is now 23…

A Call to Action: Empowering Children to Lead Change

Life often keeps us so busy that we forget to tap into the beautiful minds and hearts of children. But trust me, if we pause for just a moment and really listen, we'll be amazed at what they have to say.

Our two amazing facilitators, Manira Apa and Prokash Bhai conducted a Focus Group Discussion on 10th March 2024. Picture this: 11 kids,…

ECDO's Journey towards Community-Led Change

At ECDO, our mission revolves around uplifting the most marginalized within ethnic communities, including groups like the Patro community and tea garden laborers. However, we recognize that the concept of community-led initiatives is still relatively new, and many individuals within these communities may not fully grasp their own strengths. It will take time for them to rediscover and harness these strengths effectively.

As an organization, embracing the…

Social leader vs neglected people: Subservient to the power of the leader of their own society

From March 16 to March 20, I had the opportunity to conduct an interview survey of some people from the Dalit community. To listen openly to their own thoughts. When we told them about the interview, they were hesitant at first. They was afraid to say something. But when I and Aashirbad's facilitator, Shantidi were able to convince them that the information…

From Memories to Mission: Transforming Perspectives in Dadubari

Few months ago, I embarked on a journey to my Dadubari, my grandparent's home, a place filled with cherished memories of winter pitha and summer fruits. This time, however, my visit took on a different purpose. I set out to explore the economic and social landscape of the six communities surrounding my grandparent's abode. Little did I know, my perception of these communities would undergo a significant transformation.…

Children also want to say. Children can say.

It was as part of the baseline of the GFC community-led ARC initiative using SALT and CLCP that we sat down with some 9- to 13-year-olds to find out their thinking. The beautiful moments with them inspired me too. I realized some of my wrong decisions and weaknesses at that moment. Which I will never do for the rest of my life. As I often…

From Small Talk to Soul Talk: How Genuine Conversations Drive Change

Today was one of those rare occasions when a scheduled 45-minute meeting turned into an enriching 100-minute dialogue. It wasn't because of delays or distractions, but rather because Mithun and I found ourselves immersed in a truly profound exchange.

Our SALT conversation began as a routine catch-up, but as we delved deeper, something magical…

How Conversations Build Bridges in the Workplace

On the 30th of January, we did something fun at our workplace (Grow Your Reader Foundation). We all gathered for what we called an "in-house salt conversation," a chance for everyone to come together and share. Among the exercises, I had the privilege of having a heart-to-heart with Ananya Apu, a colleague I've worked alongside for over a year.

You know, sometimes you think you really know someone, but then a…

Facilitating a SALT conversation is an Art and a Science

Watching Lakshmi Venkatraman speak with the auto driver, the other day was enthralling. We were heading to a meeting together. The morning’s peak hour traffic was true to its definition. A biker crossed our path, in a rush to reach his destination. This evoked an expletive from our auto driver. And set the ball rolling. It started with Lakshmi acknowledging the comment. As the conversation progressed, I noticed that she was asking, what I thought were…
