Being the lone female facilitating a session with an all male group was a significant challenge given the fact that Men prefer to talk sex with Men only! However, Commissioner Cole rose to the occasion and challenged herself to deliver what was a 'sterling' performance! The Men were not shy as it relates to the speaking about sex however they were 'condom shy' when it came to demonstrating how to use the male condom. (only two males out of ten participated in the condom demonstration). Modules 1-3 was introduced to the participants who shared their experiences about what they knew about the 'power of the local response to HIV/AIDS. SALT and Dream Building was the most intriguing session since drawing the individual dream took these men back to Nursery school days; they indeed appeared to be enthused about this exercise. Drawing the Group Dream brought them together for one common cause which is to envision a Dream of their Community being 'AIDS Competent'. Most of the Male participants AGREED that they would help the person/persons living with HIV to remain focus on life and living and they would also help that person to gain employment, and show them love and care.Sharing SALT in Region 6- the Ancient Countrytag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2011-06-18:2028109:BlogPost:545872011-06-18T00:30:00.000ZNicole Rhonda Colehttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/NicoleRhondaCole

Commissioner Cole and her Son visited Region 6 and shared SALT and HIV awareness with Participants who were desirous of learning about STIs and SALT as a strengths model in facilitating an AIDS Competent Community! The difference between HIV and AIDS was a very good point to note since many confuse these two concepts. The fact that one can live a very long and Healthy life if HIV positive was discussed in earnest; however, the fact that one can rapidly progress to the stage of AIDS if one was negligent with one's health was noted by all the Participants! Of course many questions were asked concerning the incubation of HIV/AIDS. The SALT and Dream Building exercise was the Fun part with Participants drawing the individual, group, and community dreams. Our ways of thinking and working as people in the community drew thought-provoking answers as well as the questions 'Are we Human'? and 'what makes us Human'? The participants were all enthused and they expressed a desire to have sessions once monthly.

The Participants were diverse with Regions 4, 6, 7, and 10 being represented. Mr. Welch and Ms. Waterman are junior facilitators who are practicing SALT in order to become AIDS Competent Facilitators. The audience was very warm and welcoming to the SALT approach since it sought to focus on "Strengths" within the Communities and not Weaknesses! Questions were asked concerning the Potentials, Resource, and Strengths within the Participant's Communities. When these were identified then they participated in Building their 'Individual Dream', 'Group Dream' then their 'Community Dream'. What is very evident is that all the participants had fun! They laughed and giggled like small children whilst drawing. The Guyana Competence Team were able to complete three modules with these participants because of the 'time constraint' of only one day; however, we will be planning another session to complete Modules 4, 5, and 6 with this Group since they are critical because of their Roles within the Health Sector as Professionals working with PLWHAs.

The activity commenced with the reciting of the Lord's Prayers as we asked Jah to "deliver us from Evil and forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us". The Female condom was the focal point of this session because women are three more times likely to become infected with HIV than Men owing to their socioeconomic conditions, culture, sexual violence and their inherent biological design! A Documentary was shown which promoted the female condom and condoms in general; however, the emphasis was the Female condom; the Documentary was shown three times to ensure that participants grasp the information being disseminated. The participants were all enthused to learn and posited that the session was timely, informative, and relevant as Women are the MOST AT RISK POPULATION!
