The idea of sharing the concept and approach of Community Life Competency Nursing students came to our mind, when visited FPAN Kaski few weeks earlier. After sharing this concept with peer educators of FPAN Kaski , we realize that it would be very useful for health practitioner who are working very closely with community people in Individual level. Therefore, we decided to request Nursing Program Coordinator of Novel Academy. She was very positive and willing to gave us half day for orientation program.

To begin with, we are very grateful for the warm welcome form Mr. Bisaswar Acharya CEO of Novel Academy and Nursing Coordinator Mrs. Sharadha Pahari . Similarly, openings remarks from Mr. Mahesh Ratna Sakya, President of FPAN Kaski, and chief guest of the half-day CLC orientation program increased our morale and encourage us to conduct such activities.

In this orientation program we have planned to use game name “We are same” as an icebreaker, a very useful tool to encourage sense of community. Because of time constrain we have to change less time-consuming tool known as “Snowball”. During whole session participants of nursing student was quite amazing which make the learning and sharing process very fascinating and exciting. We believe that the way we interaction as a learner was very useful to create this friendly environment.

This time we describe the S.A.L.T approach in a new way with a game called “Blind Train” which we believe very effective and interesting. In this, game we divide participants on two group and both of groups need to make a formation of train. We gave them a simple task “To collect paper ball and carry to cross the line which been set”, to describe a dream of group or as a problem of that group. Most fascinating part of this was all participants who formed train need to cover their eyes except one who is driving the train. In addition, verbal communication was not allowed. They need to seek a way and make group understanding for effective communication and complete their task.

During this drill, participants stimulate each other to execute their plan complete their task better than other group; they appreciate their group members when they perform well in game. Likewise, they learn from each other good work and mistakes and they share within group. By this game, we believe we describe SALT approach in an effective way to understand.

The hope and dreams of this nursing community were quite fascinating and inspiring. One participant shares “We wanted to see that people treat them as respectfully as they do to doctors. Likewise, other shared “I want people to realize that nurses are not just a helper of doctor, doctor and nurses are the two part of a coin, both roles are equally important to treat patients. And I am going to make people realize by my work”.

When we appeal to provide some feedback on ClC, how they feel about this strength based approach. We are quite amazed and motivate by the response. They also feel like us, that half-day orientation is not enough to learn about this innovative concept; they wanted to learn about CLC and requested us to visit them again. For this reason, we have linked them with the constellation global community.
S.A.L.T.(y) and D.E.L.A need to come together for encourage local actiontag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2014-01-24:2028109:BlogPost:1298982014-01-24T07:00:00.000ZNabaraj Adhikarihttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/NabarajAdhikari

As a public health practitioner and community activist working for health and well-being of community people, I have always seeks a better way to build an admirable understanding between facilitators and community people. During this search I have discover the venerable approach, which I called the “DELA” to, built a trustable relation with community people. We as a facilitator need to very conscious about the various aspects of society, when we visit community with the good purpose.

We consider S.A.L.T. as a DNA of the community life competence and SALT visit is the tool for to promote local action. I believe that the success of SALT visit is base on the unfathomable relationship we as a facilitator able to establish with the people we visit. People only share their stories when they trust us as we are one of them and we are their friend. Likewise, if we properly understand community people their culture and the way people think, then we able to stimulate them to share their success stories, and good practices. To make this kind of relationship I try to follow DELA approach, which I found very effective.

The acronym DELA stands for Dress, Eating, Language and Accommodation. These are the things a good facilitator always need to sentient about. Form my experiences, I can tell that aforementioned are the thing community people judging you as their friend or outsider. This approach is quite similar with the popular idioms “Do as Romans when you are in Rome”.

Firstly, we as facilitator need to wear those kinds of dress that does not shows us we are form outer planet we need to be similar with the dress and quality of dress the community people wears while we are visiting them . Secondly, the food we eat the language we speak need to familiar with the community people. Lastly, the accommodation or setting arrangement place we as facilitator take should also be more similar with the people we sit together.

To case in point, I would like to share my experience visiting river belt community near Pokhara Valley. I was there with a couple of volunteers from UK. Actually, we are there with the objective of helping them to teach them to become a healthy and explore the existing problems in that community. As a CLC practitioner I believe in community strengths not in weakness, so we sit together with the discuss about their practices. I was aware about the living condition of that community and dress according but that was not case with other volunteers. During the discussion, the sitting arrangement shows the difference we on the top and front on chair and community people on mattress. I found that quite awkward so I joined with the community people on the mattress but the volunteers form UK does not join as I do. While the discussion progress because of this community people are more opened with me, participated actively and share their stories.

Thus, I believe that if facilitators add DELA approach on SALT, it would be more effective and useful to build the profound relation, built trust and motivate community people to increase local action.
S.A.L.T.Y Pokhara, Nepaltag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2014-01-11:2028109:BlogPost:1295352014-01-11T19:30:00.000ZNabaraj Adhikarihttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/NabarajAdhikari

Many people hesitate while they speak in front of the mass. It is not a new thing to all. It is natural to shy and feel awkward when we speak.
Many people hesitate while they speak in front of the mass. It is not a new thing to all. It is natural to shy and feel awkward when we speak. Effective communication is a key to enter one’s mind, solicit, and share the experiences. It was 11 January 2014; we Dipendra Malla and Nabaraj Adhikari had planned to have a salt visit next day in a youth led social organization called ‘Thakuri Youth Family, Kaski’. Therefore, we made a contact at secretary office and informed them for an informal visit.

Next day, we went to the organization, introduced ourselves as a person to know and learn about the organization. Our motive was to help them to identify their capabilities, strengths or competencies and achieve their goals based on those competencies they realize.

First, we asked them about what they are proud of as a person or as a organization. At first, they felt hesitated to respond. Therefore, in order to stimulate them to share their experiences, we told our own stories, which provided common ground for all of us. Consequently, they started to share their own experiences. Story began to come out one by one. For instance, they were proud of helping the helpless such as fire victims, sick people through fund raising programs and changing people lives. Though they were not economically sound, they are proud of using social media and technology such as facebook community page.

Secondly, we appreciated their social activities and encouraged them to do those activities in future too. We told them that we were inspired by them and told them to continue these activities. For instance, we appreciated Thakuri youth family could be role model for others and act as a motivator in changing people’s lives. CLC clap was useful tool to transfer the positive vibes amongst all the members.

Thirdly, we and other members itself got motivated by the amazing stories. We learnt many things together. The story of the president of youth family, Kaski Mr. Pritam Sen Thakuri was very inspiring. He shared his lifetime experiences about how he grew up and became a successful businessperson despite many hurdles of life.

Lastly, we encouraged them to transfer the learnings to the relevant person and situations because it is said that ‘knowledge will multiply if we share or diminish if we limit those knowledge to ourselves’.

USEFUL APPROACH:

Share own stories to stimulate them to speak

Inform them how they could be a role model and motivator to inspire others for change

Try to discover such stories, which could be inspiring for other members by linking them

Share examples about how sharing helps to increase our knowledge and skills and bring positive change in other lives.

Fortunately, they are working Drinking and Sanitation project in scatter settlement, which is situated southwest outskirts of Pokahara Valley. We went to visit at scatter settlement with the objective of sharing some information regarding good sanitation practices, which can help them to become health. I went at community with one medical student, volunteer from oxford university and program officer Ms. BandhanaAdhikari mountain trust . To be honest, I was not part during the planning of this program but they invited me to facilitate that program.

As a CLC practitioner, I wanted to use CLC with this scatter settlement community so I discuss with my team member to use this approach and they agreed and information sharing transformed to SALT visit. At first, my team members were confused but when I started facilitating applying SALT approach, the results were quite fascinating. To exemplify, one of the participants share her though that “the major health problems are because of the poor water quality and she was using “Sodis Process” tackle this problem and also suggested to be implemented among with other community members. In addition to this, as community member all participants perceived that open defecation is another cause for the health problems in their community. They want to do something about this problem and built latrine in their community. In this community The Mountain Trust, was supporting materials to built latrines and community people willing to act using their labor force to build it. I have not imagined that SALT approach is this powerful tool. Now I have total faith on CLC in its way of working.
“Community Life competency as my verve and life changing tool”tag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2013-12-12:2028109:BlogPost:1286092013-12-12T17:00:00.000ZNabaraj Adhikarihttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/NabarajAdhikari

When I was browsing the pocket schedule of conference, the title “Community life Competency” attract my attention, which was going to be presented by UNAIDS. I am always passionate to work for community people and help to solve the community problems becoming one of them not as isolated. I guess this was the reason; I went to attend CLC session that day. Besides that, the strong way Dr. Ruben presented the speech on the opening ceremony of conference stuck on my mind and I wanted to learn the way he presents his ideas. As the session on CLC was going to be facilitated by UNAIDS, I assumed that this might be presented by Dr. Ruben and this would be the perfect opportunity to learn from him.

At the beginning, I was amazed when he asked me “What is your hope and concern sir, regarding HIV status in your county”. To be honest at that time I thought that why he is asking me about my hope and concerns, how this is relevant to title CLC and what would he do knowing my hope and concerns. When he explains CLC with my favorite example, “overcome darkness on our life with our inner lights i.e. our strengths”. This quote makes me look towards one strength not on weakness and also realized that success in always base on strength not on dimness. Afterwards I determine this is the approach I should apply in all my works in community. Helping community people to recognize their strengths by appreciating good works of community and share those with other people where those are relevant.

Now after attending so many sessions on CLC, we as CLC Nepal Team we dream to roll out this innovative way of working and thinking in our work place. I decided to work to fulfill that dream and organized my first CLC orientation program at Hemja Youth Information Center, when I applied the CLC approach I amazed to see response from the HYIC members. I have not seen this kind of energy and enthusiasm before to work for their issues. They recognize their management and leadership ability to work on Sexual and reproductive health issues of young people. I thought if I handover my responsibility as President of HYIC to other young member in the recognizing of his support during my tenure on this way i tried to used my life and I feel better that HYIC doing very well and adopting CLC approach in their work.

Nonetheless, when local NGO name Multiple Society Development Organization (MSDO) invited me to facilitated personality development training for out of school young girls. I use CLC approach and one of the participate shared her heart touching story, though she have to left her school because of her family causes. She never gives up her passion for study, though she have some family pressure she joined adult literacy classes by managing her work time and she can read the book and newspaper. She was so encouraging to other out of school girls and I learn a lot from her.

Likewise, I introduce CLC competency with peer educators of FPAN Kaski when they invited me to facilitate the “Comprehensive Sexuality Education for Peer Educators”. I decided to share the new innovative way of thinking and working i.e. working as a learner not as expert and encouraging youth to adopt good practices form young people and using SALT approach. As the peer, educator community they decided to share each other is learning among group. They also wanted to learn more about community life competency ask me when the next time I share more about CLC.

In this one year, I learned a lot from this learning sharing process of CLC. I changed my approach on every training that I have facilitated , I always considered myself as learner and when I heard stories form people that reality encourages me and I share those stories to motivate other people. My especial thanks goes to Dr.Ruben for introducing CLC concept one year back this really help to change me as a human being. I would also like to thank for all my CLC trainees, Bina Ma’am for their encouragement and Rituu ma’am for recognizing my work. I really appreciated supports from all peoples from FPAN Kaski, MSDO Hemaj and HYIC members during roll out of CLC in Pokhara .
