Avani Sanstha's Smile team has been working in the context of SALT in Kandgaon, Nandwal, Vashi villages for the past few years. The reason behind writing this blog is that we get a mental satisfaction after we work. But after starting SALT, our emotions are also attached to the work. Similar sentiments connected with the people of the village because of our SALT.

Global Fund for Children President John and Tiyas visited our organization. On this occasion 'Mini Knowledge Fair' program was organized for the people of Vashi, Nandwal, Kandgaon. 100 people from all villages were present in this. These included men, women, adolescents, children, village leaders and Aanganwadi workers. They shared the action they took after SALT and CLCP process. Sharing two examples from Vashi village where i facilitate.

Challenging gender norms In this event, Vashi Anganwadi Sevika said that Gudipadwa is traditionally celebrated as New Year in Maharashtra which marks arrival of spring. Gudi means flag.It is a bright, colorful silk scarf-like cloth tied at the top of a long bamboo. On the day of Gudi Padwa, people hoist Gudi flags outside their homes. Widows are barred from hoisting the Gudi. The Anganwadi Sevika said that SALT made her realize every on brings value to the community and at times its women who follow practices which harm other women. Therefore in 2023 on that Gudipadwa she invited a widow woman of taking down the Gudhi. And the old tradition was broken. Thus we see that Anganwadi workers themselves are starting to bring about change.

Improved communication within families
A mother from Vashi village mentioned the changes caused by SALT conversations with children and their families. Younger children try to copy older children rather than their parents. With increasing alcohol consumption by youth in the village, the children are also getting influenced. But with SALT in the family, communication between mothers, fathers and children has grown, now there are more family conversations. Children begin to understand the difference between good and bad. The family began to share their thoughts.

Villages contributed food for the Knowledge Fair People of the village felt that they had also had to contribute to the KF. Some voluntarily offered cooking materials for this event. In the KF we served vegetable biryani. The villagers provided 15 kg of rice and vegetables. Avani staff had to buy condiments and cook the biryani and pack it. Because this was not only the program of Avani Sanstha but it belonged to the entire village. The program went well.
We learned how SALT affects people's minds and motivates them in life.
Value of facilitating SALT in familiestag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2024-03-15:2028109:BlogPost:2106962024-03-15T06:30:00.000ZShahrukh Atpadehttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/ShahrukhAtpade

Discussions have been going on in villages using SALT for the past couple of years. In this there are discussions with Gram Panchayat, Anganwadi workers, children, women, elderly people. After taking SALT in some families it was found that the family never discussed together.
Initially, the children were mobilized by visiting schools in Vashi village. In this the children were visited every Saturday. Initially SALT was done with them and later planned to have SALT in their families. Before that I asked the children what time you are together and they said family is together after 7 pm. After communicating with the children, it was found that there is no communication between the children and the parents, the relationship between the father and the children is not so strong and trustful, the children talk freely with the mother but are afraid of the father. I decided that we need to have SALT in the family.
Time was taken from the family by calling during the day and SALT was taken after 7 pm to visit. In some places the father was not present in SALT. I wanted father in SALT so discussed with him the reason behind the visit and asked him to attend. After that, mothers, fathers, children, old people started meeting in the family. Things started to get better in the SALT family. I started taking more SALT with the family.

Went to a family in the evening to take SALT. It was a small house. A family consists of mother, father, son, daughter. Discussion started with everyone. It was learned that children used to fear their fathers. It was the father who started it. He said that when I was a child, I was not pampered at home. I used to fear my parents a lot. Father became addicted and used to beat mother every evening. I used to feel very sad to see this. So I was very afraid of my father. After I got married and had kids a few years later, I thought I'd try to be a little tougher on my kids so they wouldn't get into that habit. So that they get good habits. I feel very bad when children are afraid of me. But I could never talk to them openly. Because they never let me understand their feelings. I love them so much. The children were very surprised after hearing this. The children were listening to their father attentively. He felt that father was being a little harsh with us for our good and to remove the difficulties in our future life by learning from the incident in his life. But they also want their children to love them like their mother.
After SALT, the boys hugged their father with love and decided to chat every evening and share their thoughts with each other.

Because of such things, the benefits of taking SALT in the family started to be understood. Because before this there was no discussion with each other in the family. The father did not know about the dream of the children, the children did not know about the dream of the parents. He was not aware of the good works he had done in his life. SALT started discussions in the family. Parents started communicating with children. Children began to understand the dream of every parent towards their children. Parents encouraged their children by telling them stories from their childhood.
Having SALT in the family gave the children a means to have open discussions with their parents.
After taking SALT with the family in Vashi village, everyone's dream towards the young children became realised. I started telling them that many people in your village have the same dreams.
As SALT increased communication with the family, trust between them began to grow.

To change the society, it has to start from the family. Because family is an important element of society. The change in the family is passed on from generation to generation. And society is made from this family.
KF A rendezvous of affectiontag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2024-02-09:2028109:BlogPost:2102172024-02-09T11:00:00.000ZShahrukh Atpadehttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/ShahrukhAtpade

We were very happy. To go to a new place, to meet new people, to learn new things, to draw strength from people.

We first traveled by plane and reached Jaigaon. Discussed with Rural Aid Team. A friendship developed between all of us.

We sat together on the first day and discussed SALT in various ways. Ritu made a conversation between the two teams.

We visited the Dima community and took SALT with them. One of the women in the group I was in got really excited while talking about her family. His daughter also became very excited while talking about her family.Although we are strangers, through SALT, in such a short time, they are confidently telling us what is close to their heart. This is only possible because of SALT. Gram Panchayat members expressed their opinion and it was clear that they are eager to bring about a lot of changes. And they are trying for it.I felt very good about their strength. People spoke with great confidence. Everyone has a lot of energy to work with.It was the day of Knowledge Fair. It was very cold that day. And we were all very excited. The program started with introductions. And this recognition was done through the game of ball. All were divided into Group SALT.I was accompanied by young women from the village. He shared his dreams for the village. I saw an energy in them. The energy they are transferring to each other is trying to create change together.

After that we told about the SALT that Avni team is taking in the villages of Kolhapur. SALT initiated changes in families through children, Anganwadi sevaks learned SALT changes at work, changes in women.

AER took place at the end of the program. Everyone gave their opinion in this.

I felt like this day would never end. Because when we are with the community, we let go of all the stress and revel in them.

I would definitely like to see everyone again. And would like to appreciate the work done by them. A community thrives only when we appreciate a job well done.
I will speak, I will be my strengthtag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2024-02-07:2028109:BlogPost:2101132024-02-07T07:30:00.000ZShahrukh Atpadehttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/ShahrukhAtpade

SALT Activity is conducted in Vashi village through the Avani organization.
A SALT family from Vashi village contacted me over the phone and asked me to take SALT in a family. There were some problems in that family regarding their children. I went to their house. There were 2 small rooms of 10 × 10. 1 elderly grandmother and a family of 4 lived in that house.
I started discussing with them and got to know them.

After a while the SALT process started Mother, father and little boy were talking. But their elder daughter who was in 8th grade was not talking. Everyone started telling good things about their life. Father and mother started talking very heartily. Parents encouraged their daughter to speak.

She started talking. She said, I am very scared. In the school I study in, a boy in my class used to abuse a lot. I didn't like it. I used to think that I should drop out of school and stay at home.
After a few days it was realized that he was addressing me and insulting me. I felt very sorry for this. I came home and for one reason or another the school took a break. I did not say anything when my parents asked. I used to sit quietly at home. Didn't talk to anyone. My mother started to know that I was hiding something. When she took me closer and asked me, I told my mother everything that had happened.

After going to school with mother, mother told the teacher about this type and asked them to take action on it. Mother did all these activities for me without fear. I felt so much better. And I thought I want to be strong like my mother. She has to learn to deal with situations like hers. Today I feel great to share this story with everyone. My mind is opening up.

AER
1. Today I was able to talk to my parents very freely. - girl
2. As a father, I will strive to fulfill all the dreams of my family. - Father.

Reflections

I came to know from this SALT that even when children are in some difficulty, they are not able to tell this to their family with confidence. But when we connect with them through SALT, they are able to tell, that too with courage.

Next time I go to a family to take SALT, I will encourage the children to speak more.

The connection that is build makes the work easier. Through the exchange, we got to know each other. He shared a story from his life.

Some years ago, every evening, he would go out to eat ice cream with his friends. It was a lot of fun, they all laughed and talked. One day they found a 5 to 6 year old boy who was standing to buy ice-cram with a 500 rupee note. He bought himself an ice cream and walked away. Everyone was surprised to find a child at night coming alone to buy an ic-cream. All the friends approached and the boy and asked him why he was alone. He said, “ At home there is a land related dispute, I don't want to go back”. We explained to him how unsafe it is for him and convinced him to return home. He told where his home was and we took him back to his home and explained to the parents what the boy had done. He added that whenever all the friends met, they remember this story and feel very fortunate that that were able to help the boy.

I had SALT conversations with Anganwadi Sevika. Then I observed that the number of students in Anganwadi was less. State education department issued a notification regarding shutting down schools with less than 20 students. This raised apprehension among Anganwadi workers about the possible shutdown of local government schools in Washi. The students in the Washi government school have declined parents prefer to admitt the children to an English medium school.

After a few days, I visited an Anganwadi centre in the village and met some mothers and children and interacted with them. I invited the mothers to recall their childhood memories of school. Memories they will never forget. The women described how their school life was fun. A small school of beautiful Koularu houses, the dung and wt soil in the school yard and its aroma, a small hand carrying a bag and a box of food. A woman shared many special memories like the friends she met after coming to school, the ringing of the school bell, and the songs sung in the school. The children in the Anganwadi were listening very intently to their mothers. I told the mothers that their children could also experience it. But for this, you have to admit your children in your Marathi or local school. Although English medium is the need of the hour, the children will not be able to live the beautiful life you lived in Marathi schools.

After the discussion, everyone thought about the future of their children. And one mother said, "we cannot deprive our children of their childhood. As we have shared our beautiful experiences today, children will also be able to tell in the future. "

Mothers also shared that the fee in private, English medium schools is high and at times they are not able to pay the fees and withdraw the children and admit them to government-run Marathi medium schools. If the quality of education improves, it will encourage the parents to admit them to government schools.

AER

1. Today we got to think about the future of our children. We remembered and enjoyed our childhood.

2. More discussions like today's should be held with women. We will help you with this.

Subsequently, the Aanganwadi workers shared about the above meeting with their colleagues, other Anaganwadi workers. I plan to visit and facilitate a conversation with them.

This festival is considered to be a festival of prosperity, happiness and gratitude. In this festival, the children of Vashi village decided to show their village dream in a different way. The children's exams were over and the children got a 10-day Diwali holiday. The children wanted to do something different in the village. They told us this story. After discussion, it was decided to make a fort. School vacation, afternoon time, bowls in hand, plates and everyone went to the farm with caps on their heads.

Soil, small stones were collected and brought. Stones were started to be carved for Keelya. Boys and girls started working together. Initially there were differences but the goal was fixed. We used to visit. At some places we used to tell them the solution. Boys played all day, girls made Diwali sweets all day and everyone worked together in the evening. The day was fixed and as planned, on the last day of Diwali, the children enshrined the idol of Sainik and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the fort. The children showed the dream they had made for the village.

The children said that just like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he worked to build his dream village for the people of his village. He developed the village along with the Lodas of the village. People unitedly helped him for this work. Also, all of us children are telling the dream of Vashi village through this fort on some important topics in our village.

People started coming to see what the children had done. Children started presenting their dreams. Sarpanch, the village head, who could not make it, wished the children over the phone.

Through this activity, the children showed unity while building the fort and showed the dream of their village differently. At this time 20- 25 women, 15 -20 men, 25 -30 children were present.

At that time One of the women told a very nice story. She said that, " I was educated in a rural area school. I studied till 10th. After that I got married at the age of 14. My dream was to become a doctor. But that dream did not come true. I didn't get a chance to get education after marriage but I expect from both my children that they will fulfill my dream. I told my elder daughter about my dream but her dream is to grow up to be an engineer. I did not force her. My other daughter who is currently in Anganwadi came to me and said 'Mom I will grow up to be a doctor for you' at that time i felt very Happy. At this time, all the other women present praised the little girl. After that the rest of the women narrated their school life experiences.

The Anganwadi Sevika then told the women that if you educate your children in local language medium Marathi school, it does not necessarily mean that it is inferior. they will learn a lot of good things and experience a lot and it will be far cheaper. Everyone agreed with this and everyone said that we can't take away the childhood from our children's lives as we completed our childhood with so much fun that I want to give to our children.

But during this time we could not meet men or other people who are engaged in any job or business or farming.

1. As a solution to this, some important decisions have been made by the president of the organization. We had a meeting with our president Anuradha Bhosle Madam. We changed our office time for facilitating SALT in various age group people because SALT creates an environment that changes the way people think. So, we have started going out to meet at night because of this we are meeting with all Family members, Men, women, and children.

2. As well as, we have moved our office near the four villages. Now we have set up our team at Vashi village. In Vashi, our Avani Organization's other project is running. It is very helpful to us for SALT Activity as this office is closer to the villages we work in.

The advantage of this move has been that we have started going to the villages on time at any moment. We have started spending more time in villages, and it is very helpful for SALT.

Knowledge Fair with communities was held on 21st May 2023. A few days after the event, I (Shahrukh) went to Vashi village to meet the people who had come for the knowledge fair. At that time I initially met the Anganwadi Sevika.

They expressed their opinion regarding this program. All anganwadi sevikas said that "we liked this program very much. It was great to see everyone share their dreams for their village. We also loved the fact that everyone listened intently today as we shared our dream of Vashi village. We especially liked the lively discussion with us by Corey Madam from GFC, America...it was very engaging and uplifting."

Then we were moved by the presentation by Faith Foundation and Rural Aid on various issues in their villages. We were listening very carefully to what they were saying, as our full attention was on them. After we heard all their stories, we also felt that we too can do all these things in our Vashi village by ourselves and with the help of other people in the village. We heard how they had engaged youth and adolescents. We so far had been engaging school children, mainly girls. Now we will engage adolescents and youth.

Also, before the Knowledge Fair program, Corey Ma'am and Rituu came to meet us. They had a nice chat with us. We told them about our village's dream regarding children. We are very happy because we are being guided by the one who asked us to dream and show us the direction to fulfill that dream.
Aanganwadi workers, Children & adolescrnt girls build their common dreamtag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2023-05-26:2028109:BlogPost:2082272023-05-26T07:21:03.000ZShahrukh Atpadehttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/ShahrukhAtpade

Everyone was called to the Anganwadi center in Vashi village. In April 2023 about 17–18 people joined including Aangawadi workers and girls aged 11–16 years. We asked them to write what their dreams are about their village and about the children of the village. They could share through any medium painting, song or by writing. Everyone was divided into groups and asked to compile a dream. In this, two groups were formed, Anganwadi workers and children. Everyone started compiling their dreams in their own way. The Anganwadi worker told you from the dream that,
1. They want that the number of people who drink alcohol in Vashi village should reduce
They dream that there should be such a system in the village that alcohol should not be consumed.
2. Girls in the village should also get equal rights as boys.
3. The mentality of the older women of the village should be changed and they should give equal respect to the girls.

Children expressed their dream that
1. Girls have the right to study, they should be able to study
2. There should be such a situation in the village that the girl should also live with pride.

Tried to meet through acquaintances in the village, and because of this, some meetings were conducted.

An opportunity to meet some Boys (Taruns) came through an acquaintance in Avani Sanstha. We went to their house. A house a little outside the village, a quiet place with the chirping of birds. In this calm environment, we sat down at his house for SALT. In the beginning, there was a discussion about the youth of the village. So far, everyone I have met has said the same thing. Our discussion started on the topic ‘70% of men in the village consume excessive alcohol'. He said that we know the situation of our village, and we are very worried about the village, But we can't do anything. At that time all men themselves told me that let us do something about it. So that the young generation of the village will get rid of this abuse.

At this time, I felt very good that some young people want to change the village, but they are not getting support from anyone. But they keep trust in us because of salt. They decided that we would meet the men and help them recover from this abuse.

I attended a social event in the village where I met a man who is a social worker in the village and told him about what we were trying to do. He encouraged other men to meet me. They were reluctant.
But finally they agreed for a group meeting . But we used SALT in our conversation with them. They found it refreshing and interesting.
This is a start, we will work further on initiating men to take action.

I will give wings to children's dreams...tag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2023-02-23:2028109:BlogPost:2067282023-02-23T08:30:00.000ZShahrukh Atpadehttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/ShahrukhAtpade

When I asked them to recall one good thing that happened in their life, they were lost in thought. I gave them some examples to stimulate their thinking. Then the father began to speak.

He said, “I was born in a middle-class family, my father was a postman, I have four sisters, the family situation was meager but my father worked hard for the education of our siblings. During that time, our school was very long, so we had to travel a lot by walking, but due to the determination to learn, I overcame all the difficulties and continued to study, so today I am working in a good place because of my hard work. Today my financial situation is good, I also have a son and two daughters, I am always trying to make them understand the importance of hard work and education.

His son has passed 10th. He wants to join the army or police. He will have to work hard for that. They always encourage the child for that. But when I took the SALT, the boy also realized that if his father had worked so hard for education, we too should work harder. The boy said that he will work hard to fulfill the dream of his parents. Because of taking SALT, the parents did not have to ask their son to work hard because the child knew how much and what hard work his father had done for his education and he realized the importance of education.

Through this SALT, it is understood that every family wants their next generation to be good and hardworking. The father also announced his wish that I would do the same for my two daughters as I am doing for my son's further education as per his wish. It will also encourage them to fulfil their dreams and help them in times of need.

The women who live as daughters-in-law in Vashi village, aged between 32 and 45, have only one dream: to teach their daughters a lot and make them self-reliant. As the situation in Vashi village is going on, I think the situation will be the same for women in many villages. The reason for this is that women of this age did not get to learn more, because sometimes the economic conditions of a family is weaker, sometimes there were more siblings in one family, and at that time family members gave importance to boys' education more than girls. Because they think boys will continue to take care of the family but the girls get married and go to someone else's house, why spend money on girls' education? Even though they know that they are being treated unfairly, girls do not speak up because they are taught from childhood to do as their elders tell them to do. These women have to deal with the situation of suppressing their own dreams. They do not know how to raise their voice for their rights.

Today, the daughters of these women are 15 to 17 years old and they also dream about them that their daughters should learn a lot and become self-reliant, but they cannot tell this to their husband or any elder family member in the house. They also keep these things in mind. I have met many women through SALT and when I ask them about their dreams, they say that they want to teach my daughter to be self-reliant. They do not agree to marry her off at a young age. Because getting married at a young age ends all the desires and aspirations of girls and they start living someone else's dream and women are not able to express regret about it after marriage.

Since I started SALT in Vashi village, these women have now openly spoken to me about their dreams, their desires, because I have encouraged them through SALT, they are now firmly voicing their opinions in their homes as well. These women have only dreamed so far but through SALT I am making them realize what they have to do to make it come true. SALT is giving wings to the dreams of these women, and all these things women have told me.

When asked to recall a good work experience in his life, he thought for a while and began to tell.

When the mother of that family was asked what she was proud of, she said that there was so much poverty in her father's house that time her father could not teach both her and her brother, so she stopped her school and told her father to teach her brother, so her brother today studied hard and now he is engineer. She is very proud of this that she stopped her own education and taught her brother. Her husband and daughter did not know what the woman had done in her life.
After my mother's experience, my father shared some of his experiences. He said that I studied in 12th standard but during that time money was very important to study. As my family did not have that much money, I could not pursue further education despite being smart. As soon as I 12th passed I got a job in the Gram Panchayat in the sanitation department. There is a lot of work to be done in this department. Once there was work to clean a 5 km long pipe. But no one is ready to do this work. Then I decided to clean that pipe. If I had not done that work, many families would have to live in unsanitary conditions. If you take such a risk, your superiors will be impressed and will increase your salary. I did that risky job thinking that the seniors would trust me and it would make my family feel proud. It took me 3 hours to clean that pipe. I was having trouble breathing while inside but I came out after finishing the job. After coming out of the pipe I was feeling very uncomfortable.
What I learned......

I facilitate SALT with everyone as a facilitator. But today on 10th Dec 2022 when I went to facilitate SALT with the children, SALT conversation triggered discussion around gender. The children shared a lot about this issue, they are telling with a felt need to bring about a change. But they know that they cannot achieve a gender transformative change on their own. They said that older and powerful people are in powerful positions and the voice of the youth is not valued.

I am thinking that when some change has to be brought, which is required, not everyone in the community will support to bring that change, and then those who want to do something also take a step back.

I got to learn that, if no one will ask us what is your dream, then no one will even tell you in this busy world. But I am getting this chance and I am getting a chance to do something new and connect with people through this SALT. I learned that in this fast-paced world, you need someone to take out time and ask you about your life, about your dreams, about the dreams of your village.
Initially it was decided to play a small game with the adolescent girls. But along with them younger sister also came there and joined us. We started with the game, in which everyone told their name, what they like to eat and which game they like. In which the little girls also told about themselves. After that SALT activity started.

They were asked to remember one good deed done in their school life or apart from it, after that everyone started thinking, after a while a girl told her story. She said that when she was in third standard she and her friend were going home. Her friend fell and hit her head and started bleeding profusely. So she put her handkerchief on the girl's head and immediately took her to the hospital so that the girl could be treated quickly. It gave her great comfort that he helped a girl in need. Everyone appreciated her. All the girls who came said that it is very difficult to understand all this at such a young age and it is also very difficult to do such a big work. Then everyone clapped for her. After that one girl said that when my mother goes to work from 10 am to 8:00 pm to run home, I see all this with my own eyes, I appreciate my mother work. Always i am helping my mother in house hold work. I think my mother is doing hard work so i am always help my mother like this i am taking care of the my mother. I am proud that I am young but I am helping my mother in some way or the other so that she does not work even after coming home so that Let him get some time to rest. I will be a good person when I grow up. Hearing this, everyone praised him a lot and clapped for her. everyone knows the strength in her. She said that at a young age she can take a lot of responsibility and she alone can do a lot. Similarly, everyone shared the good work done by them. After that everyone told the strengths of their friends. When the activity started, small children also came there because they also had to participate in it. All small children's started telling their stories one by one and started becoming happy. when everybody started appreciating them too.

Being a facilitator, I got to learn that girls can do a lot. But they are not allowed to move forward, the reason for which is their family and society. Which keeps them tied in a frame in which all their happiness and their dreams are suppressed by putting responsibilities on them.

AER
1. Today we realized our strength and got to know a lot about our friends and we had a lot of fun today.
2. Will bring our friends along with us next time and would like our brothers to also participate in such conversations.

In the beginning, we introduced ourselves by asking name, mother's name and what everyone likes to eat. After asking the questions, everyone was a little flustered but happily introduced themselves. After a short conversation, we asked to everyone to remember one good deed they had done in their life, which they had done from childhood till now, which they would always remember. One woman started telling about herself she said, my husband is a driver and he takes of all responsibility of our house, but in this era of inflation, I felt that it is very important for me to support my husband by economicaly, so I decided to do some work. Initially i started working in the fields after that I made a small effort to start my own business in which I started selling vegetables. After some time, i started to make red chili powder. Right now I am happy with my life because me and my husbond take equal responsibility of our house. even being a woman, i am supporting my husband in this way. All the women clapped for her.

after hearing this story, and praised him. This is how everyone told their story. Due to which it came to know that the suppressed power in them should come out and every woman should recognize her power and use it in every difficult moment of their life.

First of all, we all got our identity done, in which everyone told his name and about themselves. All the present women are used to work in the field and at home to earn their living. That's why I started SALT in a slightly different way. A short game was taken to relieve their tiredness after which everyone was a little happy and we started the salt. After a brief conversation, we were asked to remember a good deed they had done in their life since childhood till now, which they will always remember. After this question, one women took some time and started talking about her story. She told that when she had gone to a place to visit with her family, she found an expensive mobile lying there on the way, which she picked up from there and she was waiting If anyone come to find this mobile. She stood there for the next one and a half hours that its owner would come and take this mobile. Then after 2 hours, some college students were came there and they looking for something there, who seemed very restless, and were soaked in sweat, then that woman called those boys and asked, they are finding any mobile? The collage student said yes, after that woman return that mobile to them. Then all those children touched her feet and thanked her. Qt that time the woman felt that it was my duty to return it, because this thing is not mine and to buy it a lot of price has to be paid which comes from hard earned money. She always remember this because the smile that came on the faces of those children after returning that mobile was going to be remembered forever in their lives. When the woman told the story here, everyone applauded and praised her and this boosted her moraly. Similarly another woman told her story in which she returned the gold ring of a small child to their family members. That's how everyone told their story. After listening to all the stories it came to know that all are honest and hardworking. After this, everyone recognized and praised the strength of their friends.

The Gender Equality program was conducted in schools by Avani Sanstha, but after that we realised that change will not happen if we just work with children, it is very important to work with their families as well, for this we adopted Community life competence process (CLCP) and SALT and started working in the villages.

In the village, we started reaching out to the people through SALT conversations. We started listening to their stories and experience and help them realise the power they have within them.

S means to share, A to appreciate, L to listen and learn and link, and T is for team and transfer. Through SALT conversations, we listen to them and appreciate good things about them. This not only fosters a strong bond with them but it also brings out their inner potential and strengths. And it encourages them to use their inner power, to solves their personal as well as community challenges. This is step one of Community life competence process (CLCP). we have realised that SALT is a technique that connects people with themselves and with each other.

After doing SALT process in the village, we did dream building with the people. We facilitated a common dream by asking everyone's dream which was step 2 - children, youth, old men, women and local grassroot level workers. And after that a few days we helped them do a self-assessment of their dream which was step 3. This step was completed in Nandwal village. And now the 4th Step of CLCP is that action plan which will be made with the people of the village and people will take action which is step 5 of CLCP, and the last 6 step of CLCP is when we will bring the communities together to learn from each other. Through CLCP, we want to help people realise that whatever problem comes in the community, they themselves should discuss it and find a solution on it.

Because children like other activities apart from what is taught in their school, they will enjoy doing something for their village. Children know the issues in their families. They also know how the woman and men interact in the house. They have the ability to bring about a change. we only have to recognize the ability in them by bringing them all together. We have started working with children and youth. When we they will go through CLCP, it will unite them and they will do something for their village. It has been a challenge to engage their fathers who wield a lot of power in the family. We have trained children on SALT and they have started doing SALT conversations with adults particularly men.

Change begins with yourself....tag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2022-07-01:2028109:BlogPost:2049442022-07-01T07:00:00.000ZShahrukh Atpadehttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/ShahrukhAtpade

This thing is very wrong so he wants this situation must be change. And it is possible because of only education.
About village his dream is that every woman in the village should have the same rights as men. And to do this, everyone in the village must change their mindset.

When your team had facilitated dream building we thought it was just another NGO meeting but now we realise that you were serious.

Today we learned where we are in terms of our dreams

If we have seen the dream, it is we who have to work towards our dream.

We have learned what issue needs most attention in the village

We realise that we need to involve more men in these meetings

We also want everyone in the village to dream like we have dreamt today.

What did we learn?

When we go to a family to take salt, the first thing you need to know what is their situation? Then, we should talk.

First we talk very friendly because of this we got their trust and we tried to get that family to talk Because of this he tells us such things which they never told to anyone, while taking SALT, we should listen to them as much as possible. And at the same time their morale should be increased, due to which whatever is in their mind will come out.

While taking SALT, we get to learn that if we want to know about someone's heart or mind then we has to assure them first. They talk openly for this we need as much trust.

When we go to take SALT everywhere, then we get a new experience every time, which benefits us throughout our life and through this. SALT is such an activity that which also teaches us a lot and gives us the strength to work, we have to talk least and listen to them as much as possible.

We are going for SALT visits in the afternoon, evening or night as people are mostly farmers or construction workers who are back home from work.

We work on the topic of Gender Equality with a social organization called Avani in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra. At present, we are undertaking the SALT process in 5 villages under the Global Fund for Children project which aims to build the leadership of children, youth, and community on Gender Equality.
We decided to hold a SALT meeting with the Anganwadi Sevikas of Vashi village. But due to some things, that meeting got cancelled twice in a row, but in the end it was decided to have SALT meeting on 30 October.

What happened in the meeting?

A meeting was called by Avani Sanstha in Anganwadi on 30 October. There five Anganwadi workers of Vashi village had come there. They gave us only 30 minutes time but we assured them that we will not waste their precious time.

Results of our meeting

Initially, before the meeting started, Vikrant and Shahrukh had a brief chat with the Anganwadi workers about their work. After that, I (Shahrukh) took up an activity called "Pass the Strength" with everyone. In which everyone wrote a strength of their companions, after reading which everyone liked it very much and showed a growing self-confidence in themselves.

After that SALT started. First, I gave information about SALT. Vikrant gave an example about SALT and then started the SALT process. First of all the Anganwadi workers told us about good work done in their personal life and their struggle. Tears came to everyone's eyes after hearing this. A frontline worker shared that due to a rift with her family, she could not meet them for 3 years. Though she got a job of a front-line worker and also became a mother, it was very traumatic for her. But after three years she again got back with her parents. Everyone is living well together now. In this way each story was heart-breaking but seeing the way they handled themselves in that situation, we were energized and we got to learn a lot from them. Got the power.

After listening to everyone's story, Vikrant and I told them about our SALT project, and they shared that they are excited to work with us.
In the end, we asked them what do they like. So some of them said that they like to be with children, some said that they like to cook and feed, others said that they like to be together. After this everyone was very happy that we had such a good conversation with them. One worker commented that they had expected that we would provide information on our project, but the SALT conversation was a surprise for them. They e enjoyed it a lot.

Conclusion

In the end, everyone told the strength of their companions and everyone got emotional after hearing the story. But everyone was also happy after hearing the story of their colleagues because they came to know how many good things are in our colleagues who work with us, how they overcame every trouble. It also showed that in every difficulty, everyone can work hard. And can face any difficulty. The meeting lasted more than two hours!
They phoned us after our visit and said, "No one has done this for us till today. For the first time, we laughed and cried so much. We love it, and we are ready to work with you, you can call us anytime."

Next step

In the next meeting, some new colleagues will be called Anganwadi workers will conduct a SALT meeting with them and also apply it with their family members.
Village local body (Panchayat) tastes SALTtag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2021-10-20:2028109:BlogPost:2022712021-10-20T06:00:00.000ZShahrukh Atpadehttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/ShahrukhAtpade

We Imran and me are community facilitators from a NGO called Avani in Kolhapur, Maharashtra (India). We have recently been introduced to SALT through Global Fund for Children project. We plan to use SALT in 4 villages to build leadership of children, youth and community on gender equality.

As the first step, we decided to meet the village local government officials called Gram Panchayat to seek their permission to start SALT process in this village. The plan was to submit an official letter to them regarding our project. We decided to use SALT with them.

What happened in the meeting?

Avani Sanstha was called in the meeting of Gram Panchayat on 28th Sep’21. And after their official meeting was over, we were asked to join the meeting.

In the meeting, the head (Sarpanch) asked to discuss our the work in just 5 minutes but we started the meeting by assuring him that we will not take too much time. First, we told the local leaders about our project. When we told about SALT, no one understood anything. We asked an appreciative question. They were perplexed, as no one had asked them about what they have done well in their lives. So, our team members started with our life stories. The, the meeting local leaders showed interest and started sharing their stories. The stories they shared from their lives were very powerful. One of the female leader shared that if a beggar comes to her house, she does not stop at giving money. She serves them food and ensures that he or she does not go hungry from her house. We were touched by this story. Narrating her story, the Female Panchayat leader said, "I'm not too rich to help, but I help as much as I can" to which Imran responded, "You don't have to be rich to help, you just have to be rich in mind, and you have this.”

Results of our meeting

Along with the sarpanch, all the body members told the good things they had done, through which their strength was known to all. The panchayat leader told the strength of their companions and a new enthusiasm was seen in everyone and we saw that their respect for each other had increased. We also liked it very much and got an idea of their hidden strength as well.

By going through the SALT experience themselves, the leaders understood the concept of SALT very well. They showed great enthusiasm around the idea of SALT and its introduction. This is a good way of introducing SALT and our project.

The village body (Panchayat) offered full support to our project in preparing children and youth as leaders in their villages using the SALT approach, who would be able to solve their own problems and give courage to others.

Earlier we used to go and submit a letter to the Panchayat body and get permission for our work. By using the SALT approach, it has made our work easier and strengthened our relationship with the village local body.

After Experience Reflection (AER)

In the next meeting, we felt we need to allocate more time for the session.

We will use SALT with local grassroot level workers in the village (Asha worker and Anganwadi Sevika).
